Things that amuse me

I publish the 4freeCLE Newsletter, which is the largest (and probably only) periodical listing free continuing legal education programs.

I also work on Lawyers For Warriors blog, and Washington State Bar Association's Section on Peace Through Law[1] (including our program of educational events, see Lawyers for Warriors CLE 12/27/2007.

Quotations that should be less obscure

  • "I often wonder why men set so much value upon ancestry. For as all moralists agree, that fraud and violence prevail in this life over gentleness and virtue; so to say that we had great ancestors, is too often the same as to say, that we descend from great knaves." - William Sampson, "Causes of the Troubles in Ireland" (1817), [1]
  • "When a man finds a conclusion agreeable, he accepts it without argument, but when he finds it disagreeable, he will bring against it all the forces of logic and reason." - Thucydides
  • ""Ours is a world of nuclear giants and ethical infants. We know more about war than we know about peace, more about killing than we know about living." - General Omar Bradley
  • "Any time you hear the United States Government talking about wiretap, it requires --- a wiretap requires a court order." - G.W. Bush

Pages I started

Pacific NW History

Law

Other

  • AFROMET
    - a project for cultural repatriation of looted Ethiopean goods
  • Angel of Hadley - truth or legend? a rippin' yarn either way!
  • Battlemind - a concept and a program of interest to servicemembers and their families
  • Ben Salmon - American religious pacifist
  • Confederated Tribes of Siletz
    - I gotta family connection
  • Developing Communities Project - I'd seen several references to this, and couldn't find an article. I guess that means I have to start it.
  • Don Meadows - historian & bibliophile
  • John Voss - interesting guy!
  • Knights of the Dinner Table Illustrated - an interesting spinoff, although somewhat violent
  • Kyle Snyder (soldier) - trying to disambiguate the Iraq war resister from the professional athelete
  • Lowell Mellett - journalist behind the Why We Fight series
  • List of Iraq War Resisters
    - intended to simplify "See Also" sections of some resisters' pages
  • Metallic Metals Act - a remarkable hoax cited in a study; but was the study itself a hoax?
  • Pansy Kidd Middle School = I saw this photo on Digg and just knew the school needed proper recognition. Hopefully the schoolmembers or alum will fully upgrade the page, which I based on that for Mercer Island High School
  • Solson Publications - I briefly owned a copy of their comic Reagan's Raiders. It was just as aweful as rumors
  • Sword of Sorcery - I used to have a complete run of this comic. Of course, that was only 5 issues.
  • Towereroo - in his day, the most far-travelled of Hawai'ians; he never got to marry his girlfriend
  • Wade-Dahl-Till valve - medical gadget invented, in part, by author Roald Dahl
  • William Sampson (attorney)
    - I know about this guy from editing his memoirs
  • Zenas Leonard - his journal mentions meeting York (explorer) which, if true, makes a good ending to the Lewis & Clark expedition

Pages I like to watch

  • Admission to the bar in the United States - I worked at a state bar for several years, so this is a favorite topic of mine. It's a complicated subject, so I assume the page will continue to be heavily editted
  • Hamdan v. Rumsfeld
  • Iraq Perspectives Project
    - very interesting
  • Peter Puget - explorer and sea dog
  • Saint Edward State Park - I'm an alum of the school that later became this park. It's even better now that it's a park!
  • Society of Saint-Sulpice
    - added info about St. Ed's
  • Sigilverse
: a universe destroyed by bankruptcy. Kinda ironic
  • Signing_statement
  • William Sampson (attorney)
