Mark (Marius) J Nieuwenhuijsen is the Research Professor and Director of the Urban Planning, Environment and Health Initiative, and Director of the Air pollution and Urban Environment Programme at ISGlobal in Barcelona.
Education and career
Nieuwenhuijsen completed his undergraduate studies in Environmental Science at the
Nieuwenhuijsen's contributions to the academic world are substantial, having edited 8 books related to Environmental Exposure Assessment and Epidemiology, urban and transport planning, and health. Furthermore, he has co-authored 39 book chapters and has collaborated on more than 500 research papers published in peer-reviewed journals. In recognition of his achievements, he was honored with the ISEE John Goldsmith Award for Outstanding Contributions to Environmental Epidemiology in 2018.[2] Notably, since 2018, he has consistently been recognized as one of the top 1% of highly cited scientists worldwide by Clarivate. In 2021, he was ranked as the leading scientist in the field of Urban Health. He also spearheads the bi-annual Urban Transitions conference and holds the prestigious position of Editor in Chief at Environment International.[3] Additionally, in 2020 and 2021, he served as the President of the International Society for Environmental Epidemiology.[4] He led 5 large EC funded consortia, including currently UBDPolicy, and is involved many more EC funded research consortia as WP or task leader. He leads the European Urban Burden of Disease project.[5]
