Leona Pierce (born January 28, 1921) was an American painter, printmaker, textile artist, and teacher from California. She is best known for her woodcuts.
Life
Born in 1921 in Santa Barbara, California to two schoolteachers, Pierce grew up in the Los Angeles area. She enrolled at Scripps College in 1940 for 2 years before transferring to the Chouinard Institute (now California Institute of the Arts). [1]
She moved to New York in 1945 to study at the Art Students' League of New York.
Pierce has received several awards for her woodcuts, which she first exhibited in 1947 at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. Her works are now in the permanent collections at the MoMA, Brooklyn Museum, and New York Public Library.
In 1951 she married Uruguayan-American artist Antonio Frasconi. Together, they moved to Norwalk, Connecticut and have two children, Pablo Frasconi and Miguel Frasconi.
Leona Pierce died at age 81 on 12 February 2002 in Norwalk, Connecticut.
