Cova d’es Cuieram is a cave located at Can Quintal close to the resort village of
Sant Joan de Labritja
.
Location
The small cave system is located 150 metres (490 ft) on the southern slopes of the Cas Rierons[2] uplands above the village of Cala de Sant Vicent on in the North East of the island.
History
The caves were a place of great important place and lay at the heart of
Melkart,[3] after which the caves became a shrine to the goddess Tanit. Following the defeat of the Cathaginian empire following the Third Punic War (149 BC to 146 BC)[2] the island fell under control of the roman empire and the Cathaginian old gods and deities were slowly supplanted in favour of the newer roman deities, though it is thought that many of the ancient customs and old beliefs continued here in this shrine for many centuries afterwards.[2]
