Sandbox pages

Please note that pages in your own user sandbox, such as User:Sticks66/Work Space 3, are not allowed to be filed in mainspace content categories. I see that I or somebody else have had to remove categories from the page four or five times just in the last three months, so I need to remind you that categories are not added to the page while it's in your workspace β€” when you're finished an copy your work into a new mainspace article, then you add the appropriate categories to that page in the process of creating it, but the categories do not go on your workspace page in the meantime. Thanks. Bearcat (talk) 18:50, 5 July 2018 (UTC)

Lazy shortcut I'll admit & I'd long suspected it was bad practice Bearcat. My apologies and yes I'll cut it out. Nice to hear from you.-Sticks66 14:01, 6 July 2018 (UTC)

Wikipedia and copyright

In your Paul Guest article, you write:

"in 2008 he joined the Board of the Lasallian Foundation, advocating rights and education of marginalized children in the Pacific rim."

It says in the source:

"in 2008 when he joined the Board of the Lasallian Foundation, advocating rights and education of marginalized children in the Pacific rim."

That's different by one word ("when").

You further write:

"His landmark ruling in the re Patrick case marked the beginning of recognition of the complexity of parenting issues for same sex unions and the lag between the law and social reality. His sympathetic call for legislative reform to assist homo-nuclear families earned him respect in the gay community and showed him to be a modern thinker ahead of his time."

It says in the source:

"His landmark ruling in the re Patrick case really marked the beginning of recognition of the complexity of parenting issues for same sex unions and the lag between the law and social reality. Justice Guest's sympathetic call for legislative reform to assist homo-nuclear families earned him respect in the gay community and showed him to be a modern thinker ahead of his time."

It would appear that you are unaware of the rules on copyright and that is a serious problem. I hope this isn't an ongoing problem because if it is, we will have to wipe a significant amount of content from Wikipedia. Pinging Diannaa who is our expert on copyright issues. Schwede66 18:57, 30 August 2018 (UTC)

I have cleaned copyright violations from the article, material copied from several different websites. I performed spot checks of five recent articles/sandboxes and found copyvio in Martin Tomanovits. Sticks66, I sincerely hope that you've not been adding copyvio repeatedly throughout your editing career. Please comment. β€” Diannaa πŸ (talk) 22:48, 30 August 2018 (UTC)

@Schwede66: Regarding the description of the aims of the Lasillian Foundation : I was not familiar with Foundation and didn't know how to describe it. I appreciate the eleven word descriptor I took from the CRI is insufficiently different from the CRI site. I appreciate I ought to have looked for another source and I may have found elsewhere a more generic descriptor. With hindsight I would run with "which supports development programs in impoverished communities". Are you agreeable to me making this change ?-Sticks66 00:11, 31 August 2018 (UTC)

@Schwede66: & @Diannaa: Regarding the wording extracted from the Family Court source, I was actually quoting what the Chief Justice said about Guest on his retirement. I believe my edit made it quite clear that Bryant CJ had said those words about Guest. However I appreciate that I did not use quotation marks and instead wrote "Diana Bryant said that....". It would have been suitable for me to quote Bryant's valedictory words directly, would it not ? She did say these words and it's a matter of record that she did. Are you agreeable to me replicating the quote ?-Sticks66 00:11, 31 August 2018 (UTC)

@Schwede66: & @Diannaa: Regarding your jointly expressed concerns about my editing history and your request Diannaa for comment : In my twelve years of editing I believe I've only once before been called out for copyvio. That was in 2011 on this article. I dealt with the matter promptly and satisfactorily; I learnt from it and have ever since been particularly mindful of issues that can arise when writing about subjects for whom there are limited or singular sources. No editor or admin has called "copyvio" on me since then till now. However I appreciate your standing in the Project and that this is a serious flag you've thrown. My work is laid bare and I'm confident it would stand scrutiny but I await your view.-Sticks66 00:11, 31 August 2018 (UTC)

If you can't think of a way to describe an organization using your own words, leave it out. Please don't copy a description from elsewhere online when words fail you. It was easy for me to paraphrase the copied material on Martin Tomanovits; I changed "In 1956 aged 16, on his own and with no English, he fled the Soviet Union’s invasion of his homeland and found his way to Australia" to read "He left for Australia in 1956 after the Soviet invasion."
On Paul Guest (rower) I found copying from three different websites. I removed a description of the rowing team; material describing performance at the 1968 Olympics; details of a 2002 law case; details of interest in art collecting. This goes beyond a failure to add quotation marks to a direct quote. I have temporarily reversed the revision deletion so that you can review it. β€” Diannaa πŸ (talk) 12:42, 31 August 2018 (UTC)
Thankyou. I have reworded the description of the 1968 semi-final and made clear that the Bryant testimonial comments were verbatim. I take your points regarding i) the Lasillian Foundation and ii) Tomanovits/the Soviet invasion.-Sticks66
Paul Guest (rower) is now okay from a copyright point of view. A gentle reminder: Please be super careful with copyright in the future or you risk being blocked from editing. Thanks, β€” Diannaa πŸ (talk) 15:26, 31 August 2018 (UTC)
I'm glad that this is resolved. It would be a real shame if we lost your valuable contributions. Schwede66 18:24, 1 September 2018 (UTC)
Pleased to know you've got my back Schwede66.-Sticks66 09:21, 2 September 2018 (UTC)

Dab links

Thanks for fixing all the dab links in the

Wasn't aware of that tool @Schwede66: but thanks. Here's a basic question though (been a while since I've done a list) - how do I get the refs to appear below the list table rather than above ? Rgds -Sticks66 03:34, 2 October 2018 (UTC)
I've fixed it for you. There was a line of code missing; you hadn't "closed" the table. Schwede66 04:51, 2 October 2018 (UTC)

Tedda Courtney Photo File:Tedda Courtney 1908.jpg

You listed this as an unknown source: File:Tedda Courtney 1908.jpg, Do you recall any more information as I was wondering if given the date there might be a higher quality version obtainable from an archive source like the National Libray of Australia? My reasoning is that this is either a publicity photo , or from news coverage. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 07:05, 3 December 2018 (UTC)

Also much appreciated if you could be more specific about the forum postings other player images come from, so I can use those forum postings to narrow down the dates involved for a given player.ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 10:53, 3 December 2018 (UTC)
I don't recall, I'm sorry. It may have come from here although I don't recall making the crop myself.Sticks66 11:53, 4 December 2018 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

The Original Barnstar
For your support over many years in my quest for writing Rugby League Biographys Vox3000 (talk) 00:13, 9 August 2019 (UTC)
Thankyou Vox3000. Seriously Brad it's been 10 years & 20,000 edits since anyone's given me a barnstar. So I'm touched - genuinely ! Sticks66 12:37, 10 August 2019 (UTC)

Interested in talking to the media?

Hi Sticks, I'm drafting a press release about 4 New Zealand rowers that are going to feature on Wikipedia's homepage in the "Did you know?" section during the Olympics. Given you write a lot of rowing bios, your Wikipedia contributions could easily be worked into this. Would you be interested in being part of approaching the media? I've started the release in Google Docs and you would be most welcome to contribute. Plan is that we agree on scope (an English editor and a photographer who is into rowing are also involved), I'd send it out, and we would then avail ourselves to any questions anybody might have. You could provide a real name plus email address, or just an email address. My experience is that most journos would just work with the content of the press release and not make contact. What do you think? If you want to join in, go to my page and contact me through "Email this user" in the left sidebar. That way, I get your email address and can send you a link to the document. Schwede66 18:41, 19 July 2021 (UTC)

Hey Schwede, I could be interested. I'll email as you suggest. Presume your four rowers are the NZ 2- and 2X girls ? If our McIntyre & Morrison get up over Prendergast & Gower then the NZ press may be writing a story of what might have been !! Saw your work in getting the Prendergast article to GA. Great work there ! I'll be in touch. -Sticks66 02:27, 20 July 2021 (UTC)
Olympic hooks, including the Kiwis, are listed here. Thanks for getting back to me. I'm ready to fire an email out to three parties the moment I receive your email. Schwede66 02:36, 20 July 2021 (UTC)

Precious

people in Australian sports

Thank you for hundreds of quality articles about sports people from Australia such as Scott Gourley (2006), Frank Stanton (rugby league) (2007), Herbert Moran (2009), Perry Ward (2018) and Harriet Hudson (2021), for updates such as "olympic final in infobox", for missing SlimVirgin, - you are an awesome Wikipedian!

You are recipient no.

Thankyou Gerda, most kind. Though I cringe to look at that particular 2006 article - the formatting, nil in-line refs !! - must do something about that. Regards-Sticks66 05:21, 10 August 2021 (UTC)
Thank you! Actually get articles improved immediately is a great result! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:31, 10 August 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for the Eric Alper edits

Thanks for the Eric Alper edits! ie Grossman's Eric has requested these changes himself. I also tried to change the photo with a new one the Eric provided. He says the photo is his own. I believe i'm incorrectly uploading and tagging the picture. It's been rejected on 2 attempts. Eric maintains a long list of clients that I believe he requests to have in a generic statement so as not to cause conflict. Thanks again. Please feel free to let me know how I can complete Eric's requests.
