Under The Rug is an American indie rock band formed in Santa Cruz, California, United States. The band is currently based in Carson, California, where they operate a full-scale recording studio and independent record label. The band has written, recorded, and produced four singles and a full-length LP, “Pale King," which has been informally released at live performances but is set to officially launch on December 20th, 2018.

History

Early Years

The band formed in fall, 2010, under the name “Moo,” when founding members Casey Dayan and Sean Campbell entered to win a songwriting scholarship at University of California: Santa Cruz. They won first place in the competition, winning them “$2,000” with which they bought their first audio interface. Soonafter, they met bassist Jesse Holsapple and drummer Brendan McQueeney, with whom they would later form Under The Rug. Over the next few years, under the moniker “Moo," they wrote and recorded an EP, Songs For All Ships, All Seas and a series of demo singles. Three of these singles—“Alcoholic,” “The Loser,” and “Monologue”—would later appear on their 2018 LP, Pale King. Good Times Magazine called Songs For All Ships, All Seas, “Groovy, bluesy, and unstable all at once” Singer/guitarist Casey Dayan graduated college and relocated, briefly, to San Marcos, CA. Shortly afterwards, he moved to Highland Park, Los Angeles, with Jesse Holsapple and Brendan McQueeney. There, they played frequently at venues around the Los Angeles area—including The Viper Room, Molly Mallones, Room 5, Lot 1, The Mint, Zeppelin Music, The Highland Park Artwalk, and a standing 4-hour set at Dave’s On Broadway in Glendale. During this time, they renamed themselves Under The Rug and recorded ten demo singles and wrote the remainder of Pale King, which they began tracking in the winter of 2016.

Dayan began singing for local Progressive Rock/Metal outfit Element—featuring Jason McGuire of Otep—in late 2016. Dayan’s mother, Janet Dayan, began suffering from liver disease around this time, and would pass away in May of 2017. Although he took short hiatus’, Dayan wrote vocals and tracked Element’s first single, “Daybreak,” as well as the majority of Pale King during this time.

2017-2018

After his mother passed, Dayan suggested the band book a remote airbnb and write and record a single while there. They contacted the owners of a yoga studio in Pine Mountain Club, CA, who agreed to host the group. It was there that they wrote and recorded their first official single, “Three-Legged Dog,” which approached the the death of Casey’s mother. The single was mixed and mastered by Jake Thornton (feedmejack, Still Woozy).

The experience was good for the band, so they produced two more singles this way—“Sarah’s Daydream in the Kitchen,” and “A Serial Killer Comes Home.” Both were accompanied by companion videos which were produced during the band’s airbnb stays.

During this period, the band also wrote a handful of singles, “El Presidente [2018],” being among them. Shortly after, Jesse Holsapple met David Peters, who studied with David Fridmann of The Flaming Lips. Jesse began working for Peters, and, in early 2018, Under The Rug recorded “Song For My Friends,” their first single at Peters’ recording studio in Altadena, CA. They soonafter recorded “The Neighbor’s Dog” at OakHouse, and worked with Peters to mix and master the remotely-recorded “A Serial Killer Comes Home.”

In fall 2018, the band formed UNDER THE RUG, LLC, and leased a commercial recording space in Carson, CA, to begin producing their own, and other local bands’, music.

They are expected to have their debut performance at former Disney Art Director and Super Bowl Halftime Art Director Clare Graham’s gallery in Highland Park on November 17th, 2018, where they will officially release the first song of Pale King as well as a companion animation for the album’s single, “Call Center Blues."
