More socks

If things get a little slow, you could look at the relationship, if any, between either

talk · contribs), and some recent socks, including MickNacMee (talk · contribs) (created today) and Football Insects (talk · contribs) (a sleeper from a month ago). The reason for suspecting those two is that John254 created an obvious sock today, P-B-M-L-254 (talk · contribs). Hard telling what the letters stand for. Maybe it will be obvious to somone. Anyway, he had been tagged as the creator of Baseball1015 (talk · contribs)... and PCH is on the list of suspects because this really fits his M.O. (socking and impersonating), and he might well have some sleepers lurking out there too. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots

Just checking if you are going to erase this post using the single-revision deletion functionality, which I think you are abusing quite thoroughly on other pages and appear to have quite a "fun attitude" towards your deletions instead of the expected "responsible" attitude that anyone dealing with censorship should possess. You should probably read this page several times before you lose your privileges: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Revision_deletion

"RevisionDelete should not be used to redact block logs and admin actions, or to cover up or remove mistakes, poor wordings, "ordinary" incivility, and contentious criticisms (whether or not justified). Such usage without a formal process may lead to arbitration or desysopping even for a first incident."

Good luck

Yeah, I'm thinking of something along those lines, I already threw up the warning. I was initially thinking page protection but as this appears to be bouncing across several pages a block might be the necessary option. Hopefully in the end he can effectively channel that energy in to article writing, but right now its a bit nutty. Thanks, and I'll let you know what happens with this in the end. -Optigan13 (talk) 06:28, 2 February 2010 (UTC)
Right. You can't calm down the article with a prot, as they're all over the place right now. You'll just have to calm them instead! :) Point them to the talk page(s) and state their beef there. Much better if they dook it out on there instead - Alison 06:31, 2 February 2010 (UTC)

When 1/4 is not a quarter.

Hi Alison.

You uploaded an Irish stamp here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Tostal_quarter_stamp.gif

The stamp has been mis-named in the filename and in the page title as a quarter stamp but the value is actually one shilling and four pence, which was written as 1/4, which looks like one quarter to young foreigners unfamiliar with the L.S.D. money system, as the currency was known. (One shilling was written 1/-).

Your two Tóstal stamp uploads were used in the Wikipedia article An Tóstal, and the 1/4 stamp appeared there as a one quarter stamp. I rearranged the layout and made notes concerning my caption corrections.

Perhaps you could rename the GIF picture file to something like Tostal_one_and_four_stamp.gif, and rename the page title? People used to refer to such values in that way:

-- How much is that pound of butter?
-- That brand is one and four. The other brand is twopence dearer.

The currency conventions are explained here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C2%A3sd#Writing_conventions

Thanks for the uploads; the illustrations are useful.

I have to wonder, though... that's a 1953 stamp. In the U.S. a regular postage stamp was like 3 cents. Was this Irish stamp a normal stamp or was it for air mail or something? What would one-and-four have translated to in U.S. currency? ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 06:09, 4 February 2010 (UTC)
A one shilling four pence stamp was a bit expensive. Standard letters would have cost a few pennies at the time. A shilling and four pence amounts to 16 pence (12 + 4), so that would have been for slightly pricier post. I have no idea how many American cents it would have been equivalent to in the 1950's. 1/4 = 16 pennies. There were 240 pennies in a pound. What was the pound-dollar ratio then? You work it out. --

I added a rename request to this commons image per the more common format the Philately WikiProject uses and to correct the misleading title. BTW this stamp was issued to pay the uniform foreign airmail rate from Ireland that was introduced in 1951 but this 1/4 stamp was issued in 1953 and because the rate was reduced to 1 shilling 3 pence on 6 July 1953, the stamp itself was only valid as a single use for 3 months! ww2censor (talk) 03:55, 6 February 2010 (UTC)

Hi Alison. I wonder, if you have a few spare moments, if you could tell me what went on here. Everything appears to have been suppressed, so I don't know who to ask why it was deleted and I don't want to restore without knowing why. The subject would like to know why her user page is gone. If the information is sensitive - I can be emailed! Thanks, Rockpocket 18:11, 22 February 2010 (UTC)

Hi Rocky. Emailed ya ;) - Alison 18:16, 22 February 2010 (UTC)
Super quick and super helpful as always, Allie. You're a star. Rockpocket 21:29, 22 February 2010 (UTC)

Thanks...

Thanks for your help earlier. I gather emailing the list is a faster way to get checks done when you're off line. Cheers, -- Flyguy649 talk 05:59, 23 February 2010 (UTC)

You're welcome! I do the best I can from my cellphone, tho' it's not so easy :) - Alison 06:00, 23 February 2010 (UTC)
Mine can only do calls, texts, and takes low res photos... Good enough for now, though. -- Flyguy649 talk

  • Wow! Looks like Warpath (talk · contribs) blocked as part of a socking spree in 2008. No, not me originally tho' the a/c is under SUL now - Alison 09:08, 23 February 2010 (UTC)
    • Good I'll unblock and clean the mess. Congratulations on re-claiming your good name in Navajo !! :P Choyoołʼįįhí:Seb az86556 > haneʼ 09:10, 23 February 2010 (UTC)
      • Thanks for that! :) - Alison 09:13, 23 February 2010 (UTC)

Your radical alteration of my block of User:66.172.228.21

I'm wondering if you could clarify for me why you greatly reduced this block without consulting me as blocking admin or making your reasons clear in the log.

  • (on my cell here - sorry!) I can explain that. It came up as part of a checkuser-block. I'd interpreted the block duration year as 2010 and not 2011, saw it had expired and per checkuser, saw the need to have the IP hardblocked as there's only one persistent sockpuppeteer behind it and it's a long-termish IP address. My apologies for the mistake. Feel free to set it back to 1 year, by all means - Alison 09:04, 23 February 2010 (UTC)
Ahh, it all makes sense now. Thanks for clearing that up.

Mobile Me

Hello Alison, im GeneralCheese. I noticed that your website was made on Apple Mobile Me. I have a mobile me, how can i make my website on mobile me?Written by GeneralCheese 23:20, 23 February 2010 (UTC)

Hello, I note that you have commented on the first phase of Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Biographies of living people

As this RFC closes, there are two proposals being considered:

  1. Proposal to Close This RfC
  2. Alternate proposal to close this RFC: we don't need a whole new layer of bureaucracy

Your opinion on this is welcome. Okip 02:07, 24 February 2010 (UTC)

Chuckle

Just as an aside, the little Fox news? C'mon gave me a hearty LOL. Thanks for that. Guess I didn't want to be accused of just quoting the "liberal elite" media. ;-) Wine Guy~Talk 03:46, 25 February 2010 (UTC)

lol - fair enough :) I did come close to saying "Faux News", tho' ^_^ - Alison 03:53, 25 February 2010 (UTC)

Living Persons task force work

Hey there Alison. I was talking with Keegan some yesterday, and he figured that it would be good to try to distill strategy:Task force/Living People/Drafting pages/Recommendations to the Board of Trustees down to the core points to put into strategy:Task force/Living People/Drafting pages/Recommendations to the Board of Trustees/Draft 2. Would it be possible for you to give me a hand with this? Thanks. Cheers, NW (Talk) 04:24, 25 February 2010 (UTC)

Sure thing! Can we schedule some time to go over it - maybe via IRC or Skype or something? - Alison 05:02, 25 February 2010 (UTC)
Sure thing. What about 00:00 UTC, in 12 hours or so? Would that be OK with you, or would you want to do it a bit later? NW (Talk) 12:23, 25 February 2010 (UTC)

BLP concerns for deceased people

I know there are precedents that we observe BLP concerns even for people who are recently deceased, but I can't think of them off hand. Can you help? See here. –xenotalk 16:39, 26 February 2010 (UTC)

How disappointing

I think it's awesome on a whole number of levels, actually - Alison 05:15, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

May I please ask you for a favor?

Hi Alison, I would like to ask you for a favor please. I'd like this to be deleted from the history of my talk page please. The video of execution is too cruel, too inhuman, that it is a pain for me to have it even in the history. If you could do it for me without getting yourself into troubles, it will be great. Thanks for understanding. Please forgive me being such a pain in a neck, and creating so much troubles.--Mbz1 (talk) 01:11, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

Hi Mbz1. It's gone now - I've redacted the contents of the edit - Alison 05:13, 28 February 2010 (UTC)
Thank you!--Mbz1 (talk) 05:15, 28 February 2010 (UTC)
