Oregon Law

Per your note to another user, I thought you should know that the Oregon Legislative Counsel Committee won't be pursuing any copyright claims re: the ORS. Whew. It's still a bad idea to post the text of bills, of course. Cheers, Valfontis (talk) 05:22, 3 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I don't even have to look, it has to be Rick Astley! :) And yes, they are. Valfontis (talk) 05:57, 3 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Hello: Regarding this edit: Consensus is that all
edicts of government, without exception, including laws of Oregon, are public domain in the United States: Wikipedia:Public domain#Works ineligible for copyright protection and #Public records. This consensus seems to be based on case law and the position of the US Copyright Office. I am under the impression that there is no consensus to remove such material only because a state government wrongly claims it is copyrighted. However, Bills introduced into a legislature, which have not been passed by that legislature, are not laws or "edicts of government". So Senate Bill 166 isn't a law and will presumably be copyrighted for that reason. Best regards. James500 (talk) 23:13, 8 March 2015 (UTC)[reply

Your post on my talk page is blasphemy and lies. How can you say anything is 'fact' when there is no evidence that everything we see isn't just a hallucination or an illusion? reality is just what the world collectively agrees is true. When someone experiences a hallucination we say what they see or hear isn't real because the majority do not sense it, but in reality there is no evidence what we sense is even there. Everything is opinion, even the so called 'facts' on this website. If this is such an 'objective' site, why should the opinion of the minority on what constitutes 'fact' be censored because of the opinion of the majority? Nothing in the end has any proof of reality, and fact itself is nothing but a fragile and false concept. Such clinging to concepts such as that is petty and illogical. Besides, it has a citation. I've done my research on this, this is objectively true — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lily1155 (talkcontribs) 04:11, 8 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I think you gave the wrong warning

See mine. Krett12 (talk) 15:37, 18 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Krett12 Hmm, I should been more careful with the revert edit summary. When I see an edit that inserts information that doesn't seem true my custom is to revert and mark it "unsourced", as an assumption of good faith, in case it was true. However, it is obvious that nobody is "king of the world", so I probably should have used a more precise edit summary. These were typical juvenile test edits, going around calling oneself "king of the world"— but labeling those edits "deliberate factual errors" seemed a bit harsh. When I went to place the user warning, I realized that the text of {{uw-unsourced1}} says "if you'd like to include a citation and re-add it, please do so", which would be bad advice for this instance, since there is no way to source a false statement! Upon reflection, I would have used an edit summary like "probably not true" and left {{uw-error1}} on their user talk instead. By the way, are you new to vandalism patrol? Altamel (talk) 15:49, 18 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the suggestion, which should have been an obvious thing to do. I'm going to have to stop editing Wikipedia after being up all night. I filed an SPI report at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Isla Riordan and another 38 accounts were found. --AussieLegend () 03:50, 26 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@User:AussieLegend Well, thanks for your hard work staying up all night to defend Wikipedia. I'll keep an eye out for any accounts behaving similarly and add them to the SPI. By the way, how did you find all those accounts? Is there some kind of tool to search for specific URLs in the page history? This might be useful for when I'm patrolling recent changes. Altamel (talk) 03:58, 26 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I first noticed the changes at a few articles on my watchlist and saw that some were being repeated by different users so I checked each user's edits. That's where I got the different urls. I then used Special:LinkSearch to search for articles linking to the urls.watch.movietv.bizviewhd.mepopulartoday.biz --AussieLegend () 04:14, 26 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Got it, thanks. Apparently the spammers are still at it: I've added another two accounts to the SPI. Altamel (talk) 04:23, 26 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The spamming has resumed (briefly?). The domains have been blacklisted globally and the accounts in the SPI checked and blocked, however the spam blacklist does not prevent edits like this. Please report any new domains to m:Talk:Spam blacklist. MER-C 13:46, 26 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Apologies for the ambiguity, and thanks for helping to clear the edit request backlog. Information icon Hello Altamel. Thanks for patrolling new pages – it's a very important task! I'm just letting you know, however, that you shouldn't tag pages as lacking context (CSD A1) and/or content (CSD A3) moments after they are created. It is also suggested that pages that might meet CSD A7 criteria not be tagged for deletion immediately after they are created. It's usually best to wait at least 10–15 minutes for more content to be added if the page is very short, and the articles should not be marked as patrolled. Tagging such pages in a very short space of time may drive away well-meaning contributors, which is not good for Wikipedia. Attack pages (G10), blatant nonsense (G1), copyright violations (G12) and pure vandalism/blatant hoaxes (G3) should of course be tagged and deleted immediately. Thanks. You mistakenly bitten newbies by tagging in a short time, but next time be patient with the newbies. KGirlTrucker81 talk what I'm been doing 01:53, 10 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
KGirlTrucker81, I left the user a message in response to the question they asked on the article [3]. They were clearly using the article to ask a question, and most new page patrollers I've seen never even bother to answer those inquiries. That hardly seems like being impatient to me. Granted, I should have waited longer before tagging, but please believe me when I say this is the first time I have been this hasty, as this case seemed so clear cut. I can't count all the times I've refreshed and refreshed on a new page waiting for the clock to hit ten minutes, only for another new page patroller to CSD the page first. Verizon Fios "History"

Hi, Altamel. I was wondering if you can take another look at my draft for the Verizon Fios History section we discussed recently. You'll recall that you reviewed the draft and took issue with two parts in particular. I have revised those in my draft, and I hope you think it's better suited for incorporation into the article. You can see my last note to you from August 22 here. I'm also going to post a note to a relevant WikiProject to see if others can look at this too, to get more feedback here. Thank you again for your time with this. VZBob (talk) 12:22, 7 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Quantum Corporation

Hi, Altamel. I noticed you made some updates to the Quantum Corporation page earlier today to help remove some of the promotional writing. On their talk page, I submitted several requests for edits as a result of a COI and I was wondering if you'd have the time to help review and make any of the requested edits you feel are appropriate and abide by Wikipedia's guidelines. The majority of the updates are correcting some misinformation as well as updating the article to include some more current information on Quantum and their products. Sources are included, as well. If you have any questions about or issues with any of the requested edits, please let me know so I can help answer or address the issue. If you have the time and are able to help, it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance. JessicaWinski (talk) 18:20, 12 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I did see the edit requests, as they are what drew my attention to the article's precarious state. I will try to address your edit requests, but only after cleaning up the article first. Unfortunately, you may find that the article has been drastically trimmed once I'm through with it, as I have not been able to verify most of the existing text with reliable sources. Too much of the article as it stands is sourced only to press releases. Altamel (talk) 18:34, 12 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much! I'll double check the sources I provided for my requested edits, some may be press releases but I will see if I can find additional sources to help limit the amount of research you have to do on your end. Again, please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks!JessicaWinski (talk) 18:42, 12 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hi there. I just wanted to check-in and see if there is anything I can do to assist you in cleaning up the Quantum Corporation page. I know there are a lot of missing sources as the page stands - please let me know if I can help in finding reliable sources, etc. to help get the page to a better place. Thanks again for your help & have a great day! JessicaWinski (talk) 17:27, 25 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I'm afraid I'm rather short on time at the moment. Of course you are welcome to suggest citations for unsourced paragraphs on the talk page, but just bear in mind that you may not receive an evaluation of your work from me or another impartial editor very quickly. Altamel (talk) 21:35, 25 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
No worries at all! I'll see if I can find some citations for the unsourced paragraphs in the meantime. I appreciate your help! JessicaWinski (talk) 15:37, 27 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, Altamel - I spoke with the client about trying to identify sources for the areas of the Quantum page that are missing citations, and what we've found is that much of the information needing citations is old, outdated and not really relevant to Quantum anymore. I know Wikipedia functions as an Encyclopedia and we want to keep as much historical background as possible, but wondering if it's possible to just remove those areas - since we can't find sources and it's no longer relevant. Just wanted to ask the question and get some feedback on if that's a possibility or if finding sources and keeping that information is necessary. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and thanks again for all of your help! JessicaWinski (talk) 16:07, 15 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I am a bit skeptical of the awards section: I think I can work a mention of the cell phones program in, but I'm not convinced that the Healthiest Employers award is significant since companies nominate themselves for it and must pay to attend the awards ceremony. The changes you made are good, but the tone of the article still doesn't feel as dispassionate as the average Wikipedia article. Altamel (talk) 00:53, 21 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Nuveen

Hi – My name is Jake Holtgrewe, and I work on digital and social media strategy for Nuveen. We noticed that several elements of Nuveen’s Wikipedia page are becoming outdated, and I wanted to see what we can do to help provide more current information around such items as assets under management, descriptions of our business, etc. Given Wikipedia’s guidelines around self-editing, I imagine it would be more appropriate to include the relevant facts/updates on the discussion page rather than making edits directly to the site itself. Since you have updated the page in the past, I thought you would be a good person to try and contact.

As a starting point, I would direct people to this recent article in Barrons ([1]), which includes the following statistics/updates:

• As a description of our firm, I would suggest: “Nuveen is the asset management arm of TIAA, which purchased Nuveen in 2014.” • Nuveen’s Assets Under Management are $882 billion as of December 31, 2016 • Nuveen is the world’s 15th largest mutual fund company, with $169 billion invested in 164 funds • Also, while it is not cited in the article, Nuveen currently has approximately 3,000 employees

Thanks much, and I look forward to continuing this dialogue.

Draft submission

Hi, you commented on my draft submission but how would I make it notable as a standalone article? Marquette University has their own along with other universities. Thanks! 80atUO (talk) 20:08, 25 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

That's the rub: I think it's unlikely that UO Special Collections is notable as a standalone article. You can prove that the topic is notable by finding multiple reliable/independent sources that cover the special collections in detail. So far, all of the draft's independent sources (the news articles) only discuss the Special Collections very briefly, and the rest of the sources were published by the University of Oregon, so they're not considered independent. It's not that I think UO Special Collections is insignificant; clearly they are a valuable resource. But I can tell you from experience that I don't predict a standalone article about UO Special Collections would survive a
deletion discussion. You would have to make a very strong case against merging the special collections article into Knight Library
, by finding a lot of independent sources.
Marquette University is different because they don't have a separate article about their library. Furthermore, just because other universities have separate articles about special collections doesn't mean those articles are notable – see , so I'm not going to nominate Marquette's special collection for deletion. But the Wikipedia editors who monitor new articles tend to be more deletionist, and I don't want to see your article go up before a deletion discussion.
Finally, consider this. If you merge UO Special Collections into Knight Library, the information will be much more visible to Wikipedia readers. Knight Library averages about 9 pageviews a day. Go and check the pageviews of other university special collections articles, and you will see that they struggle to hit 2 pageviews a day. Whereas a standalone article for the UO Special Collections would have very few incoming links (probably only from Knight Library), hence the paucity of readers. Altamel (talk) 21:33, 25 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, then I think I will just request someone to edit that into the Knight Library and University of Oregon page. I was just confused how Marquette University had a very short and brief page, but that makes sense now. Would I use {Request Edit} on the Knight library talk page to have someone add this for me due to my COI? 80atUO (talk) 22:05, 25 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Help with Maritz, LLC article

Hi, Altamel. Sorry for pinging you again. You mentioned before that you were unavailable to help with the Maritz, LLC article in the short term, but may be willing to revisit later. If you're not too busy at the moment, I am still looking for someone to assist with the series of edit requests on the article's talk page. I've even spent some time at the English Wikipedia IRC chat room to ask for help, but editors there seemed hesitant to assist with conflict of interest edit requests. There are 5 requests. The first 2 are about the company's subsidiaries and history, which may take a bit longer to review, but the other 3 are pretty straightforward and might be a good place to start. If you're available to help, I'd be much appreciated, otherwise I'll keep poking others. Thanks! MadisonfromStanding (talk) 16:00, 5 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Altamel. Would you have a few moments two review two passages I'm suggesting be added to Kirill Tatarinov's article? There's been a lot of news about him since he's become the CEO of Citrix and I found new details in the sources that I think will make his entry more robust. You can have a look at the new material in my Talk page note. You helped the last time I had an addition to the entry, which is why I thought I'd reach out. As you might remember, I am working on behalf of Citrix to suggest the changes, so I won't make the changes myself. Thanks! Heatherer (talk) 13:40, 11 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Verizon Fios "Telephone"

Hello Altamel, I wonder if you have time to review the Verizon Fios Telephone edit request here. Similar to what I sought with the Internet access section of the article, Telephone could be streamlined. For example, the second paragraph discusses Verizon selling landline operations to other companies. To me, this does not seem to fit the Telephone section; those details are more appropriate in History. Also, the entire section is four paragraphs, yet it is separated under three subheadings, including one about Verizon's Inside Wire Maintenance Plan and its pricing. Again, to me, this does not fit. I see Telephone as a brief factual description of what Verizon Fios' telephone service is. Thanks so much, VZBob (talk) 13:20, 16 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Altamel ... I need some advice and help. It appears that an editor, Toddst1, has 'destroyed' our gallery's entry in Wikipedia ... one that has been viewed and edited by many other editors (and administrators) over the years. COI request

Hello Altamel, and thank you for your guidance on handling edit requests this past month. I seemed to have improved a lot lately. Unfortunately, I'm coming to you today because I currently have a COI and am looking for assistance on this article. If you get the chance, can you please have a look? Thanks!

MathWorks requests

Hi! Thank you for taking a look at my COI edit requests at MathWorks. FYI, I've replied to your feedback and provided some revisions on the Talk page. I'd really appreciate it if you could take a second look. Thank you again for your help! Mary Gaulke (talk) 10:58, 10 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Help with Gigamon?

Hello, Altamel. Are you interested in reviewing additional edit requests I posted at Talk:Gigamon? In July, you answered an edit request to update the infobox. I have since posted short edit requests for History, Operations, Products, Recognition and awards, and some minor introduction edits. I posted several edit requests in hopes that it was easier on reviewing editors.

As disclosed on the Gigamon Talk page, I have a financial conflict of interest, so I am not editing the article directly as I'm offering these updates on behalf of the company as part of my work with Beutler Ink. Thank you in advance, Danilo Two (talk) 17:54, 1 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

COI Request to fix brand vandalism

Hello Altamel, and thank you for your recent guidance on handling edit requests to our brand page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CDM_Smith. Unfortunately, our page continues to be vandalized by an anonymous source. I have a conflict of interest with this page and am looking for assistance on how to handle and fix this matter. We’d appreciate you review, feedback and help? We have provided explanation, edits and sources on our talk page [[4]]. Thanks! Shepardde (talk) 15:30, 12 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Edit Review Request: Kirill Tatarinov

Hi Altamel,

I wanted to see if you'd be willing to review a few edit suggestions I made on the Talk:Krill Tatarinov. I have a financial COI so I don't want to make edits myself, and I see that you have helped out past editors with COI's implement changes in the past.

Thank you!
