Wow, 22 articles created in the last month; that is a solid effort even for experienced editors, but you are new to the game, which makes it even more impressive. And most of them are good, solid pieces of work. Well done; keep up your good work. Having just read your 22 articles (as part of new pages patrol), I can offer some pointers for your work to be even better with minimal extra effort. Schwede66 09:24, 5 January 2015 (UTC) |
As promised, here are some tips, sorted from the more important to the lesser 'issues':
- The more substantial articles suffer from a lead that is too short. The lead is to summarise the main points of the article, and as such, it's best to write the article first. Once done, write the lead as an 'executive summary'. By the way, a lead doesn't need to be referenced (with very few exceptions); if it's referenced in the body, that's good enough. After all, the lead is just supposed to be the summary. WP:LEADFOLLOWSBODYis a useful paragraph to read.
- Many of your articles are somewhat underlinked. Have a look at WP:UNDERLINK.
- Your referencing is pretty solid, which is unusual for a new editor. When you use the same reference several times but referring to different pages, you use the
Refpage
template, e.g. {{rp|23}}. As theshortened footnotesis more common, as it's more helpful for those who want to follow up on the references. It's simple to use once you've got your head around it. If you wish, I can convert one of your articles to shortened footnotes, doing edits step-by-step and explaining via the edit summaries what is going on. That way, you don't have to read up on the documentation.
That's all. Hope you appreciate some pointers. Schwede66 09:45, 5 January 2015 (UTC)

- Didn't know you were behind all this, Stuart. Note that none of the above are criticisms, though. They are well-meant suggestions on how to do things even better. But good on you for 'taking responsibility'. Do you have other stars in your class? Schwede66 09:56, 5 January 2015 (UTC)
- I'm not really behind the work (they got external funding completely without my help), but I've been supplying the wikipedia expert-knowledge. Stuartyeates (talk) 17:26, 5 January 2015 (UTC)]

User:Schwede66 Hey - thanks! I'm really enjoying it, and the team - me and User:Gracemckenzie and User:Peata_likes_art - are really enjoying it, and are looking forward to getting stuck in again for January. I'll take a look at those pointers; in particular, we're looking at going back and tidying up/expanding articles wwe're creating, so knowing to improve the lede is particularly helpful. If you could show me through shortened footnotes I'd be most grateful. Thanks again! Auchmill (talk) 18:43, 5 January 2015 (UTC)

NZ artists
Hi Auchmill - good to see a number of new articles on New Zealand artists - thanks for adding them to Wikipedia! If you are thinking of adding more, might I suggest some of the red links on {{Frances Hodgkins Fellowship}}? It would be good to have articles on the likes of Joanna Paul and Marilynn Webb. If not, that's fine - I'll get around to them myself sooner or later :) Thanks again! Grutness...wha? 23:16, 8 March 2015 (UTC)
Hey Grutness - thanks for that! Yup, we're plugging away slowly. Our first focus was on [craft artists] and now after taking part in the Art+Feminism edit-a-thon we're looking to run a regular meet-up to support people to add more artist bios overall. Slowly but surely, huh?Auchmill (talk) 23:42, 8 March 2015 (UTC)
- That's the best way :) I work in the arts down here in Dunedin, so I know quite a few of the people who should have articles - which is both an advantage and a disadvantage in writing articles for them! Grutness...wha? 00:07, 10 March 2015 (UTC)

Wellington Wikipedia Meet Up - With Childcare
Hi Auchmill, just wanted to let you know that I'd be keen to come along and assist if/when you do hold these meet ups. I am still fairly new at this but am no longer a beginner and am happy to pass on what I do know to anyone keen to learn. Feel free to leave a message on my talk page if you want to discuss. June 13 Editathon
Thanks for the note on my talkpage Auchmill. I would love to come along and help out. I will definitely be able to be there for some of the day and hopefully may even be able to make the whole day if I can make alternative childcare/kids Saturday sport arrangements. I've got a laptop and am happy to pair up with beginner editors to give them an idea of "how to", although I'm still very much on the Wikipedia learning curve myself. Looking forward to it.Ambrosia10 (talk) 22:12, 24 May 2015 (UTC)
Hello! I am working on the russian version "Burnside High School" article, which currently has short history section in wikipedia. I am writing you to ask - is there a possibility for you to visit a National Library at Welligton and obtain an electronic copy of book "Choosing the right path : Burnside High School 1960-2010 / Paul O'Connor" (http://natlib.govt.nz/records/21643829), and put some information into the article? Also I can buy a hard copy of that book. Could you give me an advice, if it's possible? I'll be happy to get any version and any part of that book. Thank you for your time, --Voyagerim (talk) 13:27, 7 June 2015 (UTC)
Hey Voyagerim. There doesn't appear to be a e-book of that publication. You can always contact the National Library directly if you want specific info from that book. I'm afraid I can't help out with this one Auchmill (talk) 04:41, 8 June 2015 (UTC)
Speedy deletion nomination of Darcy Nicholas
If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read
the guide to writing your first article.to help you create articles. You may want to consider using the Article Wizard
A tag has been placed on Darcy Nicholas requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person, organization (band, club, company, etc.), web content or organised event, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. --Anarchyte 03:25, 13 June 2015 (UTC)
Art Jewelry Forum
Hello, I am working on a pet project to help digitize information about the field of metalsmithing+jewelry. I started with making a page for Art jewelry forum (AJF), and have a list of artists that I would like to make pages for as well. The AJF page has been nominated for deletion because it is questioned if the organization is "notable". I am reaching out to you because I saw that you edited some pages that relate to studio craft, and thought you may have an informed opinion (unlike the mathematician who nominated the page for deletion) about whether or not it is a "notable organization". If you have an opinion, one way or another, please way in on the articles for deletion discussion https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Art_jewelry_forumClarefinin (talk) 21:32, 11 July 2015 (UTC)
Hey Clarefinin - I left a comment supporting the article's retention on the talk page. It's a solid article but doesn't really tell you much you can't glen by sifting around the website itself. I've been working on articles relating to New Zealand contemporary jewellery, a field I'm familiar with, but have focused on fleshing out artists, galleries and major exhibitions, and suggest you focus your attention in this way too, so you build up your track record. But kudos on a really well-argued defense of the deletion!Auchmill (talk) 03:23, 12 July 2015 (UTC)
- Auchmill, Thanks for looking that over and voting keep. It's nice to know that similar people are working on similar projects! I think after this I'm going to work on artists, there is certainly more press about artists than publications! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Clarefinin (talk • contribs) 12:19, 12 July 2015 (UTC)

I noticed you recently created the article Rhana Devenport. The article is well-written and properly sourced, but the subject doesn't appear to meet Wikipedia notability guidelines. Perhaps you could add more information and sources to show the subject's notability? --SouthernNights (talk) 22:03, 20 December 2015 (UTC)
- Kia ora Stuartyeatesadvice below I've added links to further interviews and articles, and also started a list of publications. Devenport is the director of New Zealand's most significant public art gallery and a professional with a 25-year career in museums and I think meets the notability requirements - especially in light of Wikipedia's commitment to improving gender balance in its coverage.
- I suggest reinforcing the article with references from http://innz.natlib.govt.nz/ , where a simple search turns up a number of articles with in depth coverage. See also http://viaf.org/viaf/192770980/ http://www.artandaustralia.com/magazine/issue-522/rhana-devenport Note that for references to be used for notability purposes, access to the articles is not actually necessary. - Thanks Stuartyeates. I've looked again at the page and I've pointedly used non-NZonScreen references as much as possible - but the links to excerpts of Horrocks' documentaries on that site seem useful to me. I've also looked at that talk page previously and while I can see that those actions in 2008 are contra to the way Wikipedia works, I have some sympathy for them and personally agree that they are no more a promotional agecny than any other publicly funded operation seeking to make New Zealand cultural productions more accessible and better known.Auchmill (talk) 08:32, 2 January 2016 (UTC)]

Invitation to an in-person meetup in Mohua / Golden Bay
Thinking about your summer break? Think about joining other Wikipedians and Wikimedians in Golden Bay / Mohua! Details are on the meetup page. There's heaps of interesting stuff to work on e.g. the oldest extant waka or New Zealand's oldest ongoing legal case. Or you may spend your time taking photos and then upload them.
Golden Bay is hard to get to and the airline flying into Tākaka uses small planes, so we are holding some seats from and to Wellington and we are offering attendees a $200 travel subsidy to help with costs.
