A few things, if I may be so bold as to presume to play teacher ... The use of ":" at the beginning of a line indents. "::" indents twice. And so on. Such indents say to others that you are responding to an edit with one less indent. It's helpful mostly with several people all talking at once. Use of four of these "~" at the end of a comment on a talk page signs and dates. Or is the comment about "blue" on my talk page about something else?? WAS 4.250 06:03, 16 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I saw your comment about towns and cities and incorporation on a talk page that I have watchlisted. I am not exactly sure how Texas settlements are set up but in Illinois there are three types of municipal incorporation, village, town and city. For the Illinois Wikiproject we have categorized them according to their legal status as municipalities. Thus, Category:Cities in Illinois, Category:Towns in Illinois and Category:Villages in Illinois. Now as far as unincorporated communities we had a lengthy discussion about this and in the end decided to add them to Category:Unincorporated communities in Illinois. Since they are each wholly different entities we figured that was the most logical way to do it. The parent category is Category:Settlements in Illinois. Hope that helps. Categories are added to individual articles by listing the category at the bottom of the article page. Simply list add a category, for instance Towns in Texas, by typing [[Category:Towns in Texas]] at the bottom of the article. Hope that helps. IvoShandor 01:49, 30 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Brian, I was thinking of archiving the discussion that we had on the subject in the Reagan Discussion page, simply because it seems concluded, and you and I were the only participants. It would be nice to moe the block of convo there to maintain some continuity with the rest of the talk. Texas Area Codes

I noticed on this map [2] showed Cottle county and others to have area code 940. I'm certain that Cottle county and others nearby have the 817 area code, though I'm not sure about where one starts and the other ends, but this map [3] may be a little closer to what it really is. Looking at this entry on Whitepages.com shows that Cottle County is in area code 806. I looked at the area code 940 page and Cottle county is not present there. In fact, that's probably where I got the list of counties for each area code. Nor does Whitepages show Cottle county in area code 817. So I'm not sure what the problem is. The map is not perfect, it's a rough drawing for approximation purposes (I am working on a better one but it's not ready yet), which is why the printed list of cities and counties is supposed to be definitive in case the map is slightly off. I don't see anything that looks like a category on that article: you're sure you not thinking of either external or internal links? You do have to remove the 'uncat' tag explicitly -- it's not programmed to self-destruct, or anything so ingenious as that. At a rough guess, I'd imagine you might want Category:Universities and colleges in Texas, and perhaps a "by-county" category. What I did was remove the categorization temporarily, to see why it wasn't working. I followed your advice, removed the tag, then replaced the categories, modeling them after another college. I don't quite follow: as I say, there was no categorisation to remove. Are you by any chance adding categories in the wikitext, and then previewing without saving? Unfortunately, that doesn't work: they don't show up, whether they exist or not. Be very handy if it did, mind you. However, links to categories are previewable, which is a useful trick when trying to play "guess the category name", without actually looking it up. Places like Clarendon (which would be "small towns" hereabouts) wouldn't generally have categories, that's why I suggested a county-level category.
