Yeah, I wish there were some way around the qualifiers every other sentence (or multiple times per sentence). Since I joined Wikipedia last month, my goal has been to get this article featured, so I'd really appreciate anything you can do to improve the style (or content or whatever).
As far as footnotes go, maybe we should leave them the way they were originally, but not number them. The in-text link takes you straight to the one you need, so the numbering is really just an anachronistic holdover from print. I dunno. But thanks for the help.
