Thanks for supporting at Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/Antipodes Islands. I'm pretty much resigned to the fact that it won't be promoted, but thank you anyway. I don't vote on images or comment about their technical qualities or downfalls because I don't understand stuff like over exposure, ISO, "chromatic fringing", noise, blown artifacts. Some people don't seem to understand scales, and that a map at 1:25,000 is going to have more detail of a map at 1:300,000. Both show the information correctly, just differently. It's just occurred to me that I've opposed two of your noms (bananas and Hawaii) on what may look like pretty weak reasoning, and, before that, we had a long and circular argument about copyright. Personal attack at Featured picture
Cowtowner, this comment of yours at Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/Roy Hallady was a clear personal attack built upon a premiss that was wholly without any foundation. I wrote only that the picture was poorly lit and the pose captured was a cliché. Your alleging that I was somehow uncivil for anything I wrote in my vote comment is so off base its beyond absurd. You best think twice before engaging in a personal attack by throwing out wild, unfounded accusations like that. Greg L (talk) 04:25, 25 January 2011 (UTC)
P.S. In an effort to deflate this tension, I’ve taken the liberty of moving that whole complaint-fest to here: your comment and mine. If you really feel passionate and want to have a public flame-war, you are perfectly free to revert me. Your complaint and my response are quoted below:
- Greg, where do you get off on being deliberately uncouth when commenting? Lay off a bit, you can express your opinions much more civilly (this goes beyond just this nomination). To address your concerns, I agree that the lighting is not spectacular. However, it is of a comparable level to our other FPs and I think it clears the bar for FP status. As for the "cliche" pose, there's not much we can do about that. Doc Halladay is a pitcher. Most (all) pitchers at this level throw the ball in a pretty similar manner. It's an image of him doing his job, I'm sorry that you don't think it's a dynamic action but as far as pitching goes I think this is about as dynamic as it gets. What more can we ask him to do to make it "more" interesting? I think this borders on the argument of disliking the subject matter and therefore not featuring. Uncouth means “Lacking good manners, refinement, or grace.” “[Needing to communicate] much more civily” implies I was being uncivil. Fact: Not one iota of what I wrote above is was uncivil to anyone. I wrote only that the image 1) lacked dynamic range and therefore looked drab, and 2) the pose is an old cliché. And I linked to example images of the clichés I mentioned. Period.
So you are way out of line, Cowtowner, and have somehow confused pointing out the shortcomings of an image and why it does not meet FPC criteria with being uncivil. You are just so profoundly off base. If you have a valid complaint about how the above was somehow uncivil, bring an ANI. Even if there was a WP:NoUncouth, my above comment addressed strictly the merits of the image. But I do note that after throwing a pile of wild allegations my way, then you set down to the meat & potatoes of disputing, point by point, what I was saying with regard to this picture, such as “cliché” pose and the “lighting”. Both those are a rock solid basis upon which to judge whether this picture merits being promoted.
I’ll now be coming to your talk page to further deal with this matter. But, in a nutshell, you’d best think twice before again presuming to dictate to me what I am allowed to think about the pictures here and whether it is a cliché with poor lighting. Just who in the world do you think you are?? And, next time around, read what editors write before you criticize what they didn’t write. I wasn’t talking about a lack of “dynamic action”, I wrote of the picture “being drab and lacking “dynamic range”; you know… histogram?

I have some reservations about Wiki in general and also how it affects me.
