The Nigerian educational corridor at the tertiary level produces hundreds of thousand of young and energetic graduates annually. Unfortunately, the national economy does not have the capacity to absorb even 10% of them on yearly basis. It is imperative for the government to know that national peace and security is pivot and therefore can only become a reality through wealth creation, poverty alleviation and sustainable human development.

Generally speaking, the economy is a very important sector. Infact, the position of the economy determines the attitute and bahaviour of the general public. However, no nation on earth can develop and be crime-free without a viable and vibrant economy. Even the number one Chief Executive on Earth ( Barack Obama) cannot build a modern economy without sufficient and efficient power generation and distribution. Reliable power and energy provide an atmosphere for impeccable industralization. It serves as a buffer to small-scale businesses and this would enable lots of citizens to be self reliant and therefore violent-free.
The world economic order is capitalism;private ownership of the means of production. From 1999 to date, Nigerian government under the auspices of Bureau for Public Entreprises (BPE) had sold several government owned companies to private hands. The aim was to liberalise the economy as well as to create a healthy avenue for competition, growth, development, efficiency and effectiveness. However, it is important to know that these companies can only function well and create jobs if the basic social amenities exist.
Development is a multi dimentional process that involves changes in attitute, structures and institutions. This can be realised only through strong political will and good governance.
The youth are said to be the leaders of tomorrow, but I wonder the kind of leaders Nigeria will produce in the near future. Where I earn my daily bread is an agrarian society that is 62kms away from Niger Republic. My demographic studies show that 65% of the youth in the area are illetrate and unemployed. That makes it easier for the politicians to recruite them seemingly into political thuggery. In such circumstance, youths are prone to drug addiction, extortion, violence and all sorts of crimes. I had witness an episode where somebody's ear was expunged because of slush funds that was allegedly given by a politician to the thugs, but unjustly shared. There are several allegations on politicians providing machete and hard drugs to the youths who were used to torment oppositions during electioneering campaigns. I am pretty sure there are so many places in Nigeria that share the same scenario with my host community.
No matter the billions allocated for security, violent groups such as Boko Haram and MEND would never stop to exist in Nigeria as long as the core agents of socialization such as the family, schools, mass media, religious organisations and peer groups would not function effectively. Inspite the ugly picture I had painted, I am not a pessimist, I am an optimist. I am sure our country would be violent-free if the system gives room for leaders to emerge through excellent and transparent political system. Security is everybody business. Parents, religious leaders, elders and our elites must talk to our children to be responsible and law abiding.
The family as an institution is the cornerstone of every society in the world. Parents must be bold enough to counsel children.
Every Nigerian needs good governance, sound medical system, portable drinking water, equitable distribution of national wealth, job creation, poverty alleviation and fair access to the means of production, but this can only be achieved in a peaceful environment.
Government must make sure it recruites only good people with good pedigree into sensitive organisations such as the Nigerian Customs, Nigerian Immigration Service, Police, SSS, NIA, and the Nigerian Army. Our borders must be secured properly. our police and other security agencies must be professionals, trained, information technology compliant and well equipped. Government should be sincere in its fight against corruption. The National Assembly should be sensitive by enacting laws that would impact positively on the lives of the common man.
I pray and hope that Nigeria would one day takes its rightful place in the comity of nations. I hope to see the time Nigerians would walk with prestige and dignity in the world. I pray to see the time that people of the world would be so proud to be associated with Nigerians.
