Richard Francis Burton
Thanks for your peer review input on Richard Francis Burton -- I tidied up the references. I think I found a good way of doing it which keeps things tidy and meets your suggestion of not jarring the reader. I also found a nice quote about his abilities with the sword: He also earned the name "Ruffian Dick" for his "demonic ferocity as a fighter and because he had fought in single combat more enemies than perhaps any other man of his time. --Richard Clegg 13:10, 4 April 2006 (UTC)
Peer review request
Hi Estarriol,
I found your name in the Martial arts project listing. My article on Cutmen is currently undergoing Wikipedia:Peer review/Cutman/archive1 peer review: could you let me know if you have any feedback?

Thanks Estarriol, I appreciate the edits you did on my page titled Jacob Hoeppner. Is there anything more I need to do to Wikify it? It looks complete to my untrained eye. --Cfheppner 16:33, 5 May 2006 (UTC)

Jennifer Stone
I changed her category of "Czech models" to "Czech porn stars" because they are not necessarily the same thing. I changed it for categorization because other pages for example have just "German porn stars" and them "German models". Porn stars in one category and regular super or fashion models in the other. I feel that it's best to help people find exactly what they are looking for.

Tom Hendricks
I have come across Tom on Usenet over the past few years. Self-promotion, in fact it was tag refering to his Wiki entry that made me notice this article - which I considered an abuse, but wanted somebody else's comment, rather than my two big feet.--Richhoncho 10:42, 1 June 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for the message, I think you're doing a great, and more importantly, an unbiased job. More than I could do this particular instance. --Richhoncho 21:51, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
Shortcuts!
I know ~~~~ makes a shortcut for someone's signature and date comment left, but how do I make the (Talk) link quickly without typing out (Talk), or am i just being lazy and is there no other way? ChocolateRoses 14:05, 2 June 2006 (UTC)(Talk)
- It's a little tricky - basically you'd need to build yourself a custom signature. Go into "my preferences" at the top of the screen, in the "User Profile" tab, under "Nickname" enter the following:
- — ChocolateRoses talk
- Then check the "Raw Signature" box and save. Try ~~~~ in a talk page edit (you don't need to save, just preview) and see if that works for you. It should look like this:
- You can then customise further if you like. Hope that helps, let me know how it goes. — Estarriol talk 15:02, 2 June 2006 (UTC)
Thank you very much. I'm enjoying discovering the ways of Wikipedia! — ChocolateRoses talk 19:08, 2 June 2006 (UTC)
- Could you tell me how you leave messages within the edit section? I know there's a discussion page, but is it possible to explain sources and what's been done in so far as clean-up is concerned etc. within the article itself, without it showing in the main page? So when an editor tries to change something he gets an explanation as to why it's there, for example..? — ChocolateRoses talk
- THANX
- You can surround comments with <!-- and --> and that will mean that they only appear in the source of the page, there's one in this paragraph that you can see if you look at the page source. However, generally sources should be referenced as explained in 18:10, 3 June 2006 (UTC)
Help req: restoring sidebox image of userbox
Dear Estarriol, you've been so helpful to me with my initial efforts to create a decent User Page, including recommending
The userbox now has a sidebox image, Rosetta1.jpg, that I particularly dislike. (Upon first viewing just now on my Userpage, I thought it had been vandalized!! :-o
I want to replace this on my page with the original, Rosetta_Stone.jpg, which I found easily because it's still in the directory of userboxes by profession. However, even by typing what I though was the correct name of that .jpg file, it didn't work.
Now that the
Thanks for any help you can provide! Deborahjay 02:14, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
(P.S. - the red text here of the two .jpg file names was added for emphasis; I realize I didn't use the correct syntax to make them live links.) Deborahjay
- It took me a while to get this; Rosetta Stone.jpg is the same (and I agree, awful) image of the stone that's in the userbox, however Rosetta stone.jpg is the good photo of it. It's just the capitalisation of the 'S'; sadly Wikipedia is case-sensitive on all bar the first letter. It's a shame it's behind glass now... it was great to be able to touch it. Shame we can't trust people not to be vandals. — Estarriol talk 08:52, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
Oh! The Rosetta Stone image I so disliked earlier today (that prompted my plea to you) wasn't the Rosetta_Stone.jpg, i.e. the previous userbox photo of the stone itself (full-frontal, slightly different foreground/background proportions -- and frankly, I liked it well enough), but some image called Rosetta1.jpg that consisted of a big, jaggy red "X" on a white background. Ugh!! I'm happy with what you've provided me now, and thank you for that.
Further progress report: I gained confidence and tried some more (and more persistent) tweaking of the vertical sequence of my userboxes, and now they display just as I'd intended. The only technical irregularity is that I added the simple template syntax, i.e. User wpjh for the
Thanks again! Deborahjay 14:50, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
- Obviously I have no problem doing that for you, but substing is so painless that I think I'll provide the exact text to enter for you and let you do it so that you gain the experience - if you're really still not happy doing it, let me know and I'll do it for you. It's as simple as putting instead of User wpjh. Why not give that a try and see how you go? You can always revert the edit if something goes wrong! — Estarriol talk 15:02, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
Did it! (I just hadn't understood WHERE to put the subst in relation to the item in question.) Trusting your good judgment (i.e. that I should try this myself), I've gained experience and confidence. So, with the momentum of that success, I dared attempt the restore of my preferred Rosetta Stone (by replacing the space in its name with an underscore, which I actually remembered from the aborted maneuver early this morning) -- et voila!
Oh, and I left you a tip at my User Page...see our previous discussion there. Deborahjay 16:24, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
Small press wiki
Thanks very much, Estarriol, for your early brainstorming regarding a small press wiki. Although I'm already thinking of the revert wars in its future, I have no doubt it would eventually become an invaluable resource. I'm trying to move my focus more towards print, but if this is something you're interested in persuing, please e-mail me and I'll put you in contact with people who might be interested in helping you get it off the ground. JonathanPenton 20:22, 6 June 2006 (UTC)
- Ah, actually it was something I was suggesting that the ULA might want to do (rather than — seemingly — try to use Wikipedia for their own ends). At this time, I have no personal interest in setting up the project, although in the future I could see I may do, given the number of self-published creatives in my family. Should I ever do so, I'll come knocking on your door, thanks. And if the ULA want some pointers as to what would be required, I could make them a list. :-) — Estarriol talk 22:59, 6 June 2006 (UTC)
- Oh well, my misunderstanding. Thanks! JonathanPenton 00:20, 7 June 2006 (UTC)
