Don't know if you'll ever return to check on this, but I thought the name Solanum might be a play on it's more accepeted use, Solanum tuberosa, the common potatoe. Potatoe/Couch potatoe/Vegetable/Zombie... It's a bit tenuous when you write it out, but I've heard potatoe and it's colloquialisms used to that effect a number of times.
