End of Diplomatic Missions by country Category

Hi, Russavia is currently removing the "Category:Diplomatic Missions by country" tag from these articles. His reason relates to putting articles in categories and sub-categories - you may read it on his

talk page
. I do not share his view, nor do I think it was prudent for him to make the changes without consulting first. Please make your judgement on this matter and advise him on his ]

Notwithstanding protests by others, and without providing a reason that we can be satisfied with, Russavia has continued to implement his changes that degrade the Diplomatic Missions by Country the articles. Most recently he has added a list of ambassadors to
Diplomatic missions of Russia
.
I have written to him a sterner note on his talk page, stating that the Diplomatic missions by country tag belong to articles, not to category pages. Unless a consensus emerges it will remain this way.
I would appreciate if you remain seized of this issue for the time being. Kransky (talk) 10:54, 23 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oxford Wikimania 2010 and Wikimedia UK v2.0 Notice

Hi,

As a regularly contributing UK Wikipedian, we were wondering if you wanted to contribute to the Oxford bid to host the 2010 Wikimania conference. Please see here for details of how to get involved, we need all the help we can get if we are to put in a compelling bid.

We are also in the process of forming a new UK Wikimedia chapter to replace the soon to be folded old one. If you are interested in helping shape our plans, showing your support or becoming a future member or board member, please head over to the Wikimedia UK v2.0 page and let us know. We plan on holding an election in the next month to find the initial board, who will oversee the process of founding the company and accepting membership applications. They will then call an AGM to formally elect a new board who after obtaining charitable status will start the fund raising, promotion and active support for the UK Wikimedian community for which the chapter is being founded.

You may also wish to attend the next London meet-up at which both of these issues will be discussed. If you can't attend this meetup, you may want to watch Wikipedia:Meetup, for updates on future meets.

We look forward to hearing from you soon, and we send our apologies for this automated intrusion onto your talk page!

Re: Nielsen

Oh, I completely agree with you, Nielsen is trying to keep information from the Wikipedian public....but, so it didn't look like I was getting to

Perfect! Gets the point we all are trying to make across without making anyone upset. I like it :) Take Care...NeutralHomerTalk • October 11, 2008 @ 17:13
See, that's where the problem lies. All the legal department won't tell us even the very short version of what the OTRS ticket (the thing that caused the whole deletions to begin with) says. Some privacy thing. So, we are kinda left in the dark, I think intentionally, to rebuild everything. Alot of people are using regional information, like for "Washington DC" they are calling it "the greater Washington DC area", for "Johnstown/Altoona" it's "Central Pennsylvania and Happy Valley" and as people make templates with previous information, people are coming by and kinda "regionalizing" them.
So....I would wait until the templates are finished (which might take a couple) then rebuild the list with that information and not anything from Nielsen. Right now, most people are not having anything to do with Nielsen information. Please feel free to message back :) Take Care and Have a Great Sunday...NeutralHomerTalk • October 12, 2008 @ 19:53

Missions in Taipei

A contributor has suggested that diplomatic missions in Taipei belonging to sending states that do not recognise the Republic of China should not be listed with a flag of the Republic of China, should be referred to as "Taiwan" and should contain a caveat specifying sending state does not recognise the Republic of China. While he has made this change to

Diplomatic missions of Ireland
, it would be appropriate that whatever decision to made to this article also is made in all the other DMBC articles (both the receiving and sending articles).

  • I am against removing Taiwan's flag to the exclusion of others.
  • I am against including caveats about the status of diplomatic relations, as this is not central to articles about diplomatic missions
  • I am against a change to the self-identification principle, in which receiving states are listed according to their own name. I however acknowledge there is inconsistency in the application of this rule and would reconsider my position if there is strong support to apply the logical alternative (receiving states are named according to how sending states know them). This decision however is fiddlier and would put us in direct conflict with Taiwanese (and Macedonians) who would have other agendas.

In short it is not worth the extra work, and I am not certain that this new contributor is prepared for all the extra work (and edit wars) his change entails. Please provide your views in

Diplomatic missions of Russia

It has been about six months since Russavia's proposed new bold format was developed, using a table, smaller pictures, names of heads of missions and cross accreditations. We did not come to any consensus about using it - but it was a good opportunity to see how it would look. May I also add we were worn down by Russavia's persistence that his design stay, that we redo the taxonomy of the DMBC articles ("by sending state", "by receiving state"), and we allow all those articles of Russian missions (and missions to Russia) to exist, even if they just consist of the name of the ambassador and its address.

I am still not convinced that the design of Russavia's format is an improvement on the existing design, or that these articles are the right place to list heads of missions or accreditations. I have not seen any significant endorsement of his new format, nor anybody stating they wanted to make wholesale changes to all articles.

Please note what the Arbitration Committee states about MoS conflicts:

The Arbitration Committee has ruled that the Manual of Style is not binding, that editors should not change an article from one guideline-defined style to another without a substantial reason unrelated to mere choice of style, and that revert-warring over optional styles is unacceptable.

Where there is disagreement over which style to use in an article, defer to the style used by the first major contributor.

As the first major contributor of this article I intend now to revert the article back to its original style, including any subsequent updates.

Please add your views in the talk page of

Diplomatic missions of Russia
.

Proposed Removal of all non de jure diplomatic Missions in List Articles

I would like to seek your view as to whether we should eliminate from the lists of diplomatic missions by sending/receiving countries all references to representative offices of sending states that do not have formal diplomatic missions with the host states. Diplomatic missions of the European Union

User:Alinor An editor with a keen interest in the EU has proposed to modify the article to list all the countries that do not have a mission of an EU member state, or only have one such mission. I do not support this edit, as the information does not concern diplomatic missions of the EU, only the missions of its member staets.

We have discussed this issue extensively in

Talk:List of diplomatic missions of the European Union
. I think what Alinor is arguing is that the embassy of an EU member can represent the EU as a whole, or provide services to other EU members. I do not believe this is the case. And even if such arrangements exist, it would be outside the scope of the article.

If you feel inclined, please join the discussions, make your own mind up and share your views. Kransky (talk) 00:04, 20 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It is regarding "International recognition of Kosovo" and article size. It is not a POV proposal, just a purely technical matter regarding the KB size of the article which is currently too big. Diplomatic Missions by Country articles

Hi Canadian Bobby, one new contributor would like the DMBC articles to list as diplomatic missions the representatives of Polisario, an organisation advocating for the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, within the Sahrawi DMBC article. I have no problems with genuine missions of the SADR being listed, but I think most of the representatives listed cannot be considered diplomatic missions under the loosest of definitions (such as the 19 in Spain). Do you think we should list as diplomatic missions the representatives of political organisations? Or do you think this would be a radical departure from the definitions we have been using? Feel free to investigate his side of the story at Talk:List of diplomatic missions of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic. Kransky (talk) Kransky (talk) 16:40, 23 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
