Blending Leo X sandboxes

Hi. I see what you did, but I did intend to create a new userspace page for drafting. I think it important to keep discussion of the draft separate from the general discussion. As you can see, the general discussion is already quite long and will get longer, so I very much wanted to keep a wall between the two activities. To forestall similar activity by other administrators, should I change the name of the new userpage, do you think, to, e.g., /sandbox/Leo X [drafting sandbox] ? Adjusting pilot start date - WP:Co-op

Hello I JethroBT,

I'll be putting out a formal update sometime soon, but I wanted to inform you that I've decided to push our start date back to mid-February rather than in January. There are number of reasons for this, but the biggest factor is that we are now facing the hard work of implementing our designs on the

Is there any thought to including outreach to women editors in the mentor program?

I joined this project around a week ago: Wikipedia:WikiProject_Countering_systemic_bias/Gender_gap_task_force and so far I've been a bit disappointed that not much is happening that I consider meaningful (e.g., people are arguing over icons). I was wondering is there any thought to including outreach to new women editors in the mentoring project? Or perhaps some collaboration between the two projects? I realize there is a risk here that the more you dilute things and try to make a project all things for all people it ends up being nothing useful for anyone but just thought I would raise the issue. Although I'll be out for a couple days (at least) starting monday when I get back I would be eager to pitch in if that seems like a good idea to you. Draft New Article - Sir Andrew Flamock

Hi Jethro,

I have started a draft article for the Tudor Courtier Sir Andrew Flamock in my sandbox. I believe he is noteable primarily for his notorious schoolboy humour gaffe made to Henry VIII about Anne Boleyn but he also played his part in various other Tudor actions particularly as the Kings Standard Bearer. If you google Andrew Flamock and Andrew Flammock you will see he pops up in literature, comedy and historical contexts.

Do you agree he is worth his own page as I don't want to spend time writing something only for it to be deleted?

@I JethroBT: Hi Jethro, this weekend is fine. Having thought about it some more, although Andrew Flammock tale is interesting it is what his tale tells about Henry VIII and Tudor politics which is most important imo, i.e.
  • 1 - Henry had a coarse sense of humour when it suited him
  • 2 - His sense of humour failure with the crude jest about Anne Boleyn demonstrates he really did love her
  • 3 - Henry's subsequent forgiveness and promotion of Andrew Flammock after the beheading of Anne Boleyn demonstrates the fickleness of Tudor politics

It is the end weeks for the Navy SEALS exhibit as the Summer exhibit follows the career of Erasmus Corwin Gilbreath who fought in the the Civil War, the Indian Wars, and the Spanish American War. I've actually just scheduled some edit-a-thons in late March and mid-April in the Chicago area, so I think a photowalk would be better to run in the summer. Dear I JethroBT, nice to read the history of your name! You wrote it was Bot before and now 'BT' and that BT has no specific meaning. in India BT means 'Basic Teacher'. That is a well known degree title here, and the one who completes BT become Basic Teacher and writes 'BT' after their names.

@I JethroBT: Yes it is in my sandbox. The refs are original sources like the Patent Rolls etc plus contemporary books which you probably will not be able to access without going to a History Library. Based in Thailand, it is going to cost me an abolute fortune to attend my 4th Wikimania in a row, this time round I will have to base my decision to attend in Mexico strictly on the quality of, and personal interest level in the proposed presentations. CO-OP mentor template improvements

The image template needs some lua work- it may work for portrait images but it doesn't perform in landscape. And there are a whole host of reasons why the image would be in landscape. -- Clem Rutter (talk) 14:25, 1 March 2015 (UTC)

@ClemRutter: Hey Clem, thanks. Yeah, I am aware of the problem, and it just looks plain bad. Jmorgan (WMF) will be addressing this, and I've made a task that explains this issue here on Phabricator (the newer bugzilla basically). The issue is CSS border-radius property, not Lua. I can address it if you'd like, but it will have to wait until after Wednesday. Others are welcome to experiment with solutions: the relevant CSS is on line #32 of this submodule. It works like a template; you can make changes and then preview them on a particular page that transcludes the module by pasting the URL of that page below the edit window. @Jmorgan (WMF): Fixed the issue. Thanks for the instructions! Seems that forcing the height of the image results in it being cut off for some reason, so I just removed the height parameter entirely. This does mean that long images are going to be longer, like on my profile, but that seems OK to me. Linguistics editathons in Chicago July 2015

Hi Jethro!

I'm a linguist and I'm planning a series of editathons for July 2015 in Chicago to improve linguistics-related articles on Wikipedia, especially linguistics stubs, biographies of female and other minority linguists, and under-documented languages.

Background: I'm planning them for July 2015 in Chicago because that's when the four-week Lingusitics Summer Institute will bring several hundred linguists from many institutions to the University of Chicago for special courses, to attend conferences and workshops, and so on. The organizers of the institute have already agreed to give me space for editathons on Wednesday afternoons, the 8th, 15th, 22nd, and 29th, which we've agreed is the best time in the schedule, as well as a seminar on how to use Wikipedia in the classroom. I'm hoping to not just improve linguistics-related articles, but also to increase editathon and Wikipedia expertise among linguists. I already organized an editathon in January at the Linguistics Society of America annual meeting, which went well (see report here), and I'm organizing another virtual editathon via the #lingwiki hashtag on Twitter for the last weekend in March.

I've been primarily organizing via conference-related sources, my blog, and other social media channels since my goal is to bring in linguists who aren't already editing (although quite a few have some wiki/WP experience, even though they aren't active), but I guess I should also have a WP meetup page by now. I'm thinking a centralized lingwiki page with sub-pages or subsections for the various different past/future editathons under the same umbrella would make sense -- do you think that would go under WP:Meetup, or somewhere else? talk page. Is that what you referring to, or something else? Also, I wanted to let you know that the Co-op isn't equipped to match editors to mentors based on gender. I think the idea of making those preferences available has potential, but it can't be implemented right now for our pilot because of the time left in our grant and the limited development resources available to me (if I knew how to do it myself, I would). I know you preferred to mentor female editors. Right now, I can only accommodate that preference to the extent that editors clearly identify as female and are seeking mentorship. When we incorporate automated matching into the space later, you'll be automatically matched to editors based on the kind of help they are seeking, regardless of their gender. Understanding this, if you are still willing to mentor, I appreciate any help you can offer. But I understand if you would prefer not to given the way this system is designed. New User, New Genre of Music

Hello, my name is John McIvor aka Blue Gnome Tree. I recieved your message; thank you! I joined Wikipedia because of my interest in vaporwave, a very new art/music culture that parodies the beginning of the digital age. It's a very hard genre to describe, however I'll tell you that the best way to get it is to look around a lot. It basically started as an internet joke on Tumblr, later becoming something diverse and artistically genuine. However, over the years it has evolved into something very different, and thus the page really needs to be fixed.

I'm also trying to introduce pages for all the big labels and artists in the scene, as the list given only accounts for *a few* of the early artists, who only started the scene but never stayed around. The so-called "philosophy" that the wiki page associates with vaporwave (Marxism, punk music) is also pretty ridiculous, as most people in the scene just seem to create it for their own reasons. I don't claim to be an experienced editor. I have in recent months begun to add material to pages, to add new pages and, after an unpleasnat experience when an article I had writtn was put up for AFD, to explore the AFD process by going down lists of articles for deletion, reading the arguments, figuring out the process. One of the things that amazes me is the frequency with which an AFD has been started by a Nom who makes a claim to have searched and found "no" or "only 1" source. Only to have it pointed out by other editors, sometimes me, that a totally rudimentary google produces sources. This is what the Nom in this case did. But I did not criticize her until sevearal days into the debate, where I was chatting with another editor on a tangent: What seemed to me the oddity of a writer as popular as Donovan on sites like GoodReads and Pinterest should lack a single fan with the inclination to improve her Wikipedia page (a quick glance as edits seems to indicate that before the AFD it was enhanced by publicists or by Donovan.) When TokyoGirl dd weigh in, it was by misquoting me. And, really, it felt like I had been hit by an avalanche of condescension, misquoting, and combativeness. Now, it feel like more of a ganging up, she calls in a bunch of cronies to jump on me. To me, this experience indicates, strongly, one reason why people don't join, or don't stay, or don't get involved beyond adding an occassional fact or page. Oh, and just fyi, if you doubt that people put up AFDs without googling at all, look at David Mikics, a page that I may return to improve, but that I put up merely because I was reading something he had written, wanted to read a page about him and didn't find one. @Jack798321: Are you affiliated with this company? Regardless, your behavior has been problematic for a number of reasons.
  1. Disclosing non-public information about an editor on Wikipedia
    is against our policies. If you do it again, you will be blocked from editing indefinitely.
  2. The internal affairs of Veritas Language Solutions / Planet Veritas are not really of consequence when it comes to the material we present on the article itself. We present information that is based on reliable sources. The claim about the company being wound up is supported by such a source. Unless there is evidence this claim is not factual, I'll ask you do not remove it. If there is such evidence, you should bring it up on Talk:Veritas Language Solutions.
  3. Requests for the article to be deleted need to be based on a failure to meet

    other mentors on the talk page, for many there have much more experience than I do in teaching editors one-on-one. I think it's good to focus primarily on what they want to learn. Yes, there are often basics to be taught, and I think it's good to teach those conventions, but only as they are needed. As for the editor having some experience, that's fine. Maybe the editor did some anonymous editing before he made an account. (I did before my start.) In any case, I think starting with those needed conventions first and then moving on to their specific need (about citation formats for websites) is sound. I, JethroBT drop me a line

Book Creator function

I found you scanning the list of Teahouse editors and you sounded like a nice enough guy. I'd be grateful if you could either a)answer my questions, or b)point me in the right direction to get help. The Teahouse is probably not the most appropriate area to pose these questions, so my apologies. You did sound like someone who helps new users though. Ever since I discovered the Create a Book feature I've had a lot of problems with it.

  1. How do you delete a book page that has no content? I made a mistake and then it creates another page with the mistaken title. But how do you completely clear the empty book user page?
  2. Is it possible to see all your unfinished books listed somewhere?
  3. Is it possible to preview the book before downloading or printing?
  4. Are you able to format the text of your book (font etc.)?
  5. Can you access another users main page by typing User:xxx somewhere? Where would you type in a user's name?

Would you still have decided that there was a consensus to remove information in lead about Torossian's political commentary if you had known that one of the participants in the discussion (Juda S. @Nbauman: I closed this discussion more than five months ago, not aware of that particular COI. That said, looking over the discussion again, I would have concluded in the same consensus that the information was not appropriate for the lead. Consensus is about looking at the weight of arguments, and I found comments from Jojalozzo and Huon to be compelling. Missing from that discussion was any evidence that his political commentary had garnered any independent coverage or review, which some other participants brought up. If such coverage has recently arisen, perhaps a new RfC should be opened up. As for the COI, editors with an invested interest are encouraged to restrict their contributions to the talk page of articles. Participation in the RfC was fine, but I would have arrived at the same conclusions with their participation because, again, no sources were brought up. Finally, I don't see any real basis for suspecting any other editors in that discussion to have a COI. I don't even see evidence that you've talked with any of these other editors about this matter. After Engelmayer got caught, we had a discussion about COI in which I and a second editor asked the other editors to declare whether they had a conflict of interest; they refused. We did discuss it, and the discussion was archived here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Ronn_Torossian/Archive_4 and elsewhere. His political commentary has garnered independent coverage and review. RavPapa said "there is no question that his political views are highly relevant and notable. They are discussed extensively in almost every one of the profiles cited - the NYT article, the Forward profile, the Atlantic piece". The quotes should have been in the article, but they may not have been because Torossian's defenders kept deleting them. I can't keep up with paid editors who might be getting $50 to $200 or more for their time (which is what I've heard is the going rate for PR, and Torossian probably bills much more). I don't think it's fair for somebody like Torossian to just have his staff scrub his Wikipedia page of all the well-documented outrageous and embarrassing things he said, by having them engage in endless edit wars and Wikilawyering, and creating a "consensus" among themselves. I think all of these sources need to be presented clearly and discussed as a whole rather than individually if the idea is that more weight should be given to these details. I work in medicine, and most of my writing is in medicine. In medicine, and in the medical journals, it is generally agreed that people who are employees or grantees of a company can't make objective judgments about that company's products. Even in the most objective scientific studies, people have to make judgment calls, and their judgment will favor their own company's product. That's what they're getting paid to do.

I see a similar situation here. There are a couple of people who want to make this a NPOV entry. We're swamped by people who are getting paid by Torossian. When you look at the talk page, you will see a long list of comments, by people who are working for Torossian, that seem reasonable. Of course. They're in the PR business. They're professional advocates. They're ignoring the facts that are buried in the archives. They're not trying to reach a consensus. They just want to keep going deleting everything unflattering about Torossian, including his own statements and what

WP:RS
say about him.

They're getting paid and I'm not. I can't keep up with them.

Discussing this as a whole will be a massive job. We've been through all these discussions already, and now they want to go through the whole thing all over again.

I think the issue is that when you're trying to see whether there's a consensus, you should discount the opinions of editors who get paid to post on Wikipedia. Torossian is buying favorable coverage on Wikipedia, and I think that's wrong. I've been trying to find Admins or somebody who agrees and can help me with that, (for example by not letting them arbitrarily use WP guidelines to justify their deletions), but I haven't been successful. Because I do COI stuff, my eye was drawn to this, and I read the history Nbauman describes and looked at the user Talk pages. I don't see that COi notices were given, nor a case brought to COIN or ANI or some community venue. After looking some, I did this last night
and am interested as to what will come of it. (please just let that run and don't pile on - (you are of course free to, if you want))
But in general I think it is unfortunate, and harmful to everybody involved, to try to work out COI issues in the midst of a content dispute, on the article Talk page. It's better to bring it to the community, in my view... Please see How to handle a conflict of interest. Anyway it appears there may have been some basis for NBauman's concerns. @Dank: I like your revisions for this second version. I just added a "CE" for the century for specification. I think one important detail to mention is that taiko refer to a large category of drums, and does not refer to just one specific drum (like the one in the picture). I was thinking about something like, Taiko are a large category of drums introduced to Japan through Korean and Chinese influence... What do you think? Excellent point, that really helps. I stole "a broad range of Japanese percussion instruments" from the article. I reverted "CE" ... Print sources more often leave it off (for the 6th century, anyway), and many Main Page readers won't know what it means. Hi, I need help. A vandal has been repeatedly blanking the Mary Edwards Walker article and the bot can't keep up. How do we report it and get the content back? I might have asked this before, but I didn't save the info where I'd find it again quickly. It seems the biographies of women soldiers have been having this happen a lot over the last two months.
