I finally got around to tweak the width distribution, check out my sandbox for a comparison of the current and the work-in-progress code. The template used to assign a completely static 20% per column (resulting in a 80/20, 60/20/20, etc. distribution), now it takes into consideration how many columns between Title and Length are actually used (60/40, 40/30/30, etc.). The gain in width for the Lyrics and Music columns respectively is not earth-shattering, but on a whole, width is distributed a lot fairer now and less space is wasted on unnecessary whitespace and linebreaks. Here's hoping that this change will, at least to some degree, resolve the readability issues you had with the template. – Cyrus XIII ^(talk) 19:46, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for your patience, I took some extra time to think this over in order not to rush out an opinion. Here it comes, finally: While I do like the idea of the the fixed "length" column to the right, I am not a fan of fixed columns for the writing credits. I feel that too much space is wasted when either the title, the lyricists or composer takes up little place. As a consequence, a song often spills out over several lines due to line wrapping, where it would have fit into one line without the fixed columns. This is best illustrated by "Rebel Run" in your new version (and even worse in the old). I don't think tweaking the column sizes would ever solve this problem.

To overcome this issue I would like to tentatively propose you to drop the fixed writing, lyrics and music columns and instead fitting title, credits and note into the "Title" column, like this:

• A song with writing credits would be

"Little Dumb Song" (Smith, Jones, Dupond)

• A song with music and lyrics credits would be

"Little Dumb Song" (Music: Smith, Jones / Lyrics: Dupond)

• A song with a note would be

"Little Dumb Song" (from Little Dumb Album, 1989)

• A song with both writing credits and note would be:

"Little Dumb Song" (Smith, Jones, Dupond) (from Little Dumb Album, 1989)

I don't know if it is possible to code this, but in case of writing credits the note could systematically go on a second line for improved readability.

And so on. As you see, I have kept your good ideas about note formatting and music/lyrics distinction. A second reason for this proposal is that it is closer to the current

WP:ALBUM standard, so it might be more acceptable to the community. Remember, I do support the idea of this template and I would like eventually to see it adapted as a standard in the project. Let me know what you think. – IbLeo (talk

Unfortunately, I don't own the chart book; the information contained on the Smiths' discography page was taken from someone who owned the book who printed the information for me on australian-charts.com, which I originally cited, but I was told forums were not a credible source, and so the reference was changed to refer to where the information came from; the Australian Chart Book: 1970-1992. Optionally, you can order it from the author's website, http://www.austchartbook.com.au/, or you could ask the information from a forum member who owns the book at http://www.australian-charts.com/, specifically someone such as Chartboi, BeansterBarnes and possibly even bulion. No problem, I thought it might help if the article was a little bigger and with a few more reliable sources should it come to an AfD. As for Bowie biographies, I've only read one - Strange Fascination: David Bowie - The Definitive Story by David Buckley - which I would recommend. I've also got The Complete David Bowie by Nicholas Pegg, which although not a biography is essential for detailed information about all of his songs, albums, videos, tours etc etc. I'm about to start Thomas Jerome Seabrook's Bowie in Berlin: A New Career In A New Town, which is the period which most interests me - I'll let you know what it's like. --JD554 (talk) 15:19, 19 March 2009 (UTC)

Hey, that's an amazing piece of work, a great leap forward compared to the current version. It must have taken you quite a while to put it together. Hats off! I only have two minor remarks:

1. I think
   Space Oddity (album)
   should be listed as Space Oddity rather than David Bowie because this is the name that it is known under today so that' what most readers will be looking for; the original release names are explained in the article and could be mentioned under "aka". In the 1960's single section you already refer to it as Space Oddity which is rather inconsistent.
2. By presenting it this way, you miss the fact that Peter... charged in the US.

Thanks! I was a bit undecided by the Space Oddity versus David Bowie title, but I think you've persuaded me. I know the Peter and the Wolf album doesn't have a chart position showing, but that's normal for guest "other albums" - usually only studio, live, compilation and EPs get them. Yeah, you're right about the tables being finished. The only problem I have at the moment is the verification of the UK certifications as the BPI's website has been updated and the links no longer work. I've been waiting for the new database there to come online, but it's looking like it's going to be a while yet. Right. It works, but it's quite awkward when you have thousands of articles. Also, counting the lines on the last screen is tedious when you have more than 100 :-) By the way, I am not planning to modify this particular template. Oh, thanks! However, I just read that in order to use

AWB's database scanner – which I suspect is the case for such a task – I need to download a file that takes up 21 GB. Unfortunately I don't have that much space left on my harddisk :-( So I guess I will be using AWB for other tasks, at least in an initial phase. – IbLeo (talk

You don't need to download anything, the database scanner is for big tasks that need to be done that would take too long to download piece by piece from enwiki (so you download a dump and tell it what to do, then replicate it on the live enwiki). :) —

Willy DeVille template

I noticed you are designing a Willy DeVille template. Thanks for doing that. It was on my list of things to do. Would you consider putting a "Mink DeVille" section in the template? Or listing the Mink DeVille albums, as in "Cabretta (Mink DeVille)"? You'd be surprised at how many people don't know the connection between Mink DeVille and Willy DeVille.

About the compilation albums, it's impossible to keep track of all of them. I noticed a French one the other day called "Anthologie." I'd like to put together a comprehensive list of compilation albums, but it will require some detective work. Any help you can give is welcome. SpanishStroll (talk) 21:04, 7 October 2009 (UTC)

I have actually prepared both Template:Mink DeVille and Template:Willy DeVille. The former obviously contains a link to Willy DeVille as first member and I plan to put it on the Mink DeVille article as well as all their albums. The latter will go on the Willy DeVille albums. Both of them will go on the Willy DeVille article. And both of them contains a link to the discography. That should make the link clear I would think. Yeah, there are a lot of compilations out there. You must have put a lot of work into it. Here's a source you may be interested in: The Great Indie Discography, by Martin Charles Strong. It lists some singles that aren't in the Wikipedia DeVille discography: "Cadillac Walk" (December 1977), "Guardian Angel" (June 1978), "This Must Be the Night" (April 1980), "Lipstick Traces" (June 1980), "Heat of the Moment/Pullin' My String" (September 1980), "Pick Up the Pieces" (April 1984), and "In the Heart of the City" (June 1985). I have also seen a single of "Storybook Love" (1987). And this Website also lists some singles that aren't in the discography: "Demasiado Corazon / Spanish Stroll (Live)" (1993) and "Storybook Love." DeVille put out so many different records in so many different countries, it's hard to keep track of it all. Once again, thanks for working on the discography. It really looks good. Willy DeVille studio albums

You asked for Willy DeVille studio album recommendations. Start with Le Chat Bleu, which everyone acknowledges is his masterpiece. Backstreets of Desirea mid-career album, is also a good one. I am very fond of Victory Mixture, which is a cover album of old New Orleans R&B songs from the 1958-1964 period. His first album, Cabretta, was great -- everyone likes that one. I also like Where Angels Fear to Tread, which is a great Latin-accented R&B album. BTW, I'm very busy with work right now, so I can't work on the discography. Thanks a lot for taking the time for this. When I said "Willy DeVille" I actually meant it literally. I am already quite well equipped in Mink DeVille studio albums. I bought Coup de grace and Where Angels Fear to Tread back in the 80's when they came out, I still have the LPs and I love them! Earlier this year I got Cadillac Walk which covers the Capitol era (including Cabretta and Le chat bleu) quite well I would think, although I am looking for the latter on vinyl which might take me a while. I had already spotted Backstreets of Desire as a potential next-buy, but it also seems pretty difficult to find. On Amazon.fr it is only sold secondhand on the marketplace, and people ask an awful lot of money for it. The same is true for Victory Mixture, although it is less expensive. So I might take your advice and look out for that one. Again, thanks for your advice, I really appreciate. Regarding the Willy DeVille articles, I have fun working with you and that's for me what it's all about here. I got a few ideas for improvements in mind. Template:Track listing width discussion

Well, as you say it's a rather lengthy discussion, and I am not sure it's easy to summarize in a few words. I will try anyway. Basically, User:Wikid77 argues that the current version of the template does not work well for people with low screen resolutions, hand-held devices and readers with larger text sizes. With my standard computer configuration, it took me quite a while to figure out what he meant, but finally I recognized that he has a point when I reduced the width of my window and looked at the template test cases. I believe Wikid77 is trying to solve this auto-widening issue. First with the new version in /sandbox2, where he adds a number of new parameters (including several ones that has nothing to do with the table width issue) that he until now has omitted to document despite several requests to do so. Furthermore, he proposed to gradually deploy this new template in the article space, which was strongly opposed by several editors at the end of this section. Despite the objections, he went away and did it anyway, which lead to this discussion over at WT:ALBUM and a forked template {{Tracklist custom}} which I am personally not really pleased about. Last episode so far is Template_talk:Track_listing#Proposal_to_adjust_tables_by_width_parameter where Wikid77 is working in /Sandbox on a simpler approach to solve the autowidening issue without adding all those extra parameters. I personally don't feel that a satisfactory solution has been found yet. Use of {{Track listing}} in Sweet albums

Views

• First I changed very little just the layout of the track listing it is a cleaner look, more professional than the basic one.
• Red-links are a way to add new pages if someone wants to yes using it two much is not right.
• "All lyrics written by this is away to save space so you do not have to re-list it over and over onetime is enough.

While you are more than welcome to contribute in a positive way to Wikipedia, I will at this point have to revert your edits for the above reasons. Please read WP:ALBUM for further guidelines about album articles.

• I know that I am welcome to contribute in anyway it seems like you want it your way or no way.

If you are referring to Michael Jackson's signature, you got the wrong person. Look at the image to see who provided it: File:Michael Jackson signature.svg.
