Please don't copy material from elsewhere

Since Wikipedia is freely licensed content that anyone can use, edit, and distribute, it's not appropriate to copypaste large amounts of non-free text into Wikipedia. A more appropriate way to do it is to offer a link to the translation in the external links section of the article.— Diannaa (talk) 13:24, 6 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Please provide edit summaries

Information icon Hello. Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia.

When editing Wikipedia, there is a field labeled "Edit summary" below the main edit box. It looks like this:

Edit summary (Briefly describe your changes)

You can use the edit summary field to explain your reasoning for an edit, or provide a description of what the edit changes. Summaries save time for other editors and reduce the chances your edit will be misunderstood. For some edits a summary may be quite brief.

Please provide an edit summary for every edit you make. With a

Wikipedia account you can give yourself a reminder to add an edit summary by setting Preferences → Editing
→ check Prompt me when entering a blank edit summary. Thanks! Canterbury Tail talk 13:29, 29 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Hello, I'm Denisarona. I noticed that you recently removed content from Irish people without adequately explaining why. In the future, it would be helpful to others if you described your changes to Wikipedia with an accurate edit summary. If this was a mistake, don't worry; the removed content has been restored. If you would like to experiment, please use your sandbox. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thanks. July 2022

Information icon Hello, I'm Denisarona. I noticed that you added or changed content in an article, Irish people, but you didn't provide a reliable source. It's been removed and archived in the page history for now, but if you'd like to include a citation and re-add it, please do so. You can have a look at referencing for beginners. If you think I made a mistake, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. Denisarona (talk) 07:28, 8 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

You need to read
WP:NOR

and don't restore text with no reliable secondary sources. NOR means "no original research". Doug Weller talk 08:16, 9 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Doug. In this case are you talking about my attempted recent re-contribution to the Mesha text? If so, I guess I need a bit of guidance on why Niccacci (1994) and
Ganneau and Greenberg (1878) aren't considered reliable sources? Thanks ahead of time for any further guidance you can throw my way. (I don't plan to do anything else on that site, by the way, nor on the 'Irish People' site.)Johundhar (talk) 11:02, 9 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I presume these are Christian David Ginsburg and Charles Simon Clermont-Ganneau. The way they are referred to is a mess. They should have their linked articles first, then just their surnames, except in quotations. I'm not sure about these 19th century authors and suggest you use the talk page, the editor who first reverted you is a good editor so far as I know. I am sure that these edits(https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Mesha_Stele&diff=prev&oldid=1064105498) are original research, do you agree? Doug Weller talk 13:49, 9 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
OK, thanks for your reply, I see that now. This was early on in my editing career, and I see that those were not sufficient references. The linked text just looks like common sense facts to me, but I will avoid such statements in the future. In any case, as I stated, I'm done with this page. I hope others can find ways to improve Wiki's presentation of this important text without violating norms or stepping on toes. Best, Johundhar (talk) 14:07, 9 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
There can be a steep learning curve here for certain types of articles. We all make mistakes when we start, and even after 200,000 edits I still do. Doug Weller talk 14:22, 9 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia and copyright

Control copyright icon Hello Johundhar! Your additions to

suitably-free and compatible copyright license. (To request such a release, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism
issues.

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. — Diannaa (talk) 14:08, 9 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Unblocking Veluthuru

Hi Johundar, I have made a proposal at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents#Proposal: Unblock Velthuru because several editors have assured us that non-English words don't require citations, only an expert who speaks the language. Elizium23 (talk) 17:09, 21 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
