OK, I understand that, but now I may have messed up here. I am trying to add a category to useon the page I have done for Jill Sampson. What I wanted to do is make a category link like the one for recipients of the Order of Canada. Such a list would be a useful reference and add recognition to the decoration by creating a list of these recipients. But when I tried to do it, I think I have messed up. The page Category:Meritorious Service Decoration (Canada) only shows up as a preview even though it shows the links to Jill Sampson and Julian Armour These show up because I have edited those two pages to refer to this category. Yet the category shows up in red when it is referred to. Am I on the wrong track? kgw 21:57, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

I fixed it for you. You have to add content to the category page for it to work. I added a brief description on the category page, saved it, and thus, voila, blue link. Feel free to ask if you need more help. Pepsidrinka 22:06, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

An added note: to link to a category, just write a colon followed by the category page, and enclose it in wikilinks. For example, [[:Category:Meritorious Service Decoration (Canada)]] will appear as Category:Meritorious Service Decoration (Canada). I believe, though, that you should make it a bit more clear in the article why this is being included and where the controversy falls in, because otherwise, it could easily be missed, or that sentence may be viewed as random spam...Just my thoughts, anyway... Ken -- Merope might not get back to you right away; she's taking a bit of a break from Wikipedia. If I'm thinking of the same John Turvey you are, he seems like he might be notable enough for Wikipedia. The standards are described here:

When you create the page initially, be sure to make it clear why he is notable enough (

Also, while you're adding to the article, you can include the tag {{stub}} to make it clear that it's incomplete.

It can also help to temporarily include the tag {{wip}} to indicate that the article is a work in process...but that's only intended to be used for a very brief period, no more than an hour or so. --

Ken, I thought you might be interested in this New York Times article:

"Roughly 4,000 articles are added each day, and about half that number are deleted that same day, Wikipedia says, by administrators who determine that an article is not up to standards."

With that volume of new articles, we end up having to make a snap judgement: does the article describe a person who seems to be notable enough to justify a Wikipedia bio? We honestly try to make the right choice each time; we don't want to delete valid content any more than we want to keep junk. If you just started the first version of the article as a minimal framework, with no indication why this person might be notable, then the deletion is understandable. (I really don't know; I didn't see the article.) Anyway, thanks for taking the time to add it. --

Ok, I just did the search...is this the article you were thinking of? That seems like a good citation to show that he was the driving force behind one of the first needle exchange programs in North America. --

Great work on the Cougar Annie article! I bought the book after a visit to Cougar Annie's in the 90's. She was long gone of course, and the house & gardens were in disrepair. I have a few pictures of Cougar Annie's house at the time that I'll upload when I find a scanner. I believe her house has now been torn down, but I did have a chance to wander inside at the time. I've just completed transcribing all passages from one of my own sources on Martin, J. Morton's In the Sea of Sterile Mountains, on a sandbox page at User talk:Skookum1/BC&PacificNorthwestHistory/Resources It doesn't have the particular passage on the Martin regime's session of parliament, such as it was, so I must have something else around here because, if it was maybe in a newspaper history column, I think I must have saved it; I think it was in another book though, I just can't remember which for now; but there's plenty in Morton to dig your teeth into (including the tidbit that Martin was the first person ever to be treated with insulin).Skookum1 22:11, 6 November 2006 (UTC)

An hour spent with Google tonight produced the following sources that provide background concerning Mr Bornmann that may be useful in adding content to the Erik Bornmann article. A press release by his lawyer in Ontario, and a related canada.com article. Tyee article, an essay he apparently did, Delta Optimist Article, A reference to him in question period in the BC legislature and another one. Something from CTV news, from Burnaby now, and two pieces from CBC 1 and 2. Something from Victoria voices, and from Mr Bornmann's own work and from Andrew Coyne who I think is a Globe and Mail columnist. These are at least a starting point. Made a stab at a userbox; check 'er out: Template:User WikiProject British Columbia (use {{User WikiProject British Columbia}} ). Fudged around with the colours and borders for a while, tried to use colours taken from the dogwood but wound up blue-adjusting the background, not quite happy with the bkgnd colour but it's better than the grey-transparent on the Vancouver userbox. Trying to think which stubs are needed; I think one for mountain and moutain range stubs (there'll be hundreds of these...), though the dogwood won't do for that; could use it for parks stubs, though, no? There's already a protected area stub that has a thing from the US Southwest on it; might as well replace it with the dogwood (d'ya like the dogwood? It's from Wikimedia Commons...I thumbed it down though). Trying to remember which other stubs are needed....bio-stub I guess for biographies, I'm thinking one for communities/settlements, have to think what else. Hi; I'll try and remember to get on that Vancouver Island Ranges map this evening; I spent all day yesterday making stubs and redirects (duh, talk about OCD...). But this morning I came across an online source in www.canadiana.org that has details I've been looking for for quite a while: not just the date and circumstances of the Colonial councils and assemblies, but also what their districts and members were, and the qualifying requirements for votersr and members; there's also details of the Whatcom Trail and even of the Fraser Canyon Gold Rush that I've never seen or heard of before (and that's saying a lot...in all modesty). Anyway, after reading from where I started on about page 18 of J.B. Kerr's Biographical Sketches of British Columbians, with historical etc., I know that articles on the Colonial Assembly of Vancouver Island can be started, but wanted to check the title with other editors; formal title wold be Legislative Assembly of the Colony of Vancouver's Island, I believe, or maybe without the "Legislative" qualifier; likewise the Executive Council of British Columbia which didn't come into being until almost Douglas' retirement; I think there'd been a Mainland Assembly but he dissolved it in frustration (if that's the case I saw that in Hauka, I'm sure) with the riff-raff who railed against him from it; there was one after him but I haven't read through Kerr all the way yet; I imagine all the full details are in Bancroft or Scholefield, although I'm not sure if they're on line and I don't feel like putting up with the SFU library's teenage-hallway bullshit to research anything up there; especially in reserves, which has no seating and is adjacent to the 400 cellphone-babbling, gossiping, flirting undergrads (in what used to be the quiet area of the card catalogue, years ago....). Anyway, partly passing on the Kerr/canadiana.org reference, and also needing advice/input on article titles. Hi; I've got this ongoing snarl at Talk:Oregon Country and related stuff on Talk:Oregon boundary dispute and Talk:Oregon Treaty that I'm getting weary of arguing with this User:Aboutmovies guy about; is it just me or are the sophomores taking over the world? Anyway, my fault for not digging through Akriggs, Ormsby and this new Kerr source and making sure the BPOV (British point of view) is present on these pages; but lately this kid - and I'm sure it's a kid, although apparently he has a BA (a kid, in other words...) is adamant about "proving" the legitimacy of the Provisional Government of Oregon, even making it a central theme of the article; British perspectives on the American claims and tactics are absent, and dismissed in discussion, and the Native American perspective omitted entirely; I don't know if you'd care to provide backup but it's really getting to be a waste of time for me; no matter what I say to point out his non sequiturs he wants to keep on "proving" the legitimacy of this provisional government thing the Williamette squatters set up in their own image in 1843, and isn't interested in anything else. There's a certain breed of "Oregon nationalist" that's out there, and there's similar problems on Pacific Northwest regarding what I call the "Cascadia agenda"....."historical imperialism" or "historiographical imperialism" is what I call all this stuff; revising history to justify its iniquities is an old game, of course. I'll fly this by Fishhead64 as well, though he's delightfully non-confrontational/non-committal on most things, but tends to know his early BC/NW history...I've got to do my laundry and go shopping......Skookum1 21:00, 22 January 2007 (UTC)

Hi; just happened to see the rating you gave Fort Ware; I know it's the only town for, what, 200 miles, but just curious what the rationale for the "mid" rating is; there's far larger places elsewhere that only get "low". Not that it matters, just curious. BTW there's an AFD off that fracas at Hollywood North; from the sublime to the ridiculous, if you examine the talkpage and edit history that "led" to it...actually there was nothing sublime going on at all...back to the North; found out some interesting stuff about McDame/Fort McDame/McDame Post (its various guises); I've really got to get away from the controversies on various talkpages and "get at" my ghost town and history articles; there's only so much time I've got left on this planet before they revoke my diplomatic visa ;-)....by which I mean "the road is calling" and I may be doing the wandering musician thing by spring...so should get at the planned article contributions I've always wanted to do, avoid the b.s. and the slippery slopes of impossible POV debates that seem to take up way too much time, without any actual "contributing" getting done. Well, all BC project people should probably make a point of using the project's talkpage(s), esp. for issues like this; maybe a loose policy of "if you make some comments relevant to whole categories of articles, please at least make a link on the project talkpage" or otherwise keep notes on stuff like this there......ditto with my rambling guidelines on the FN-article stuff. BTW I noticed you'd put Forbes Vernon at mid or low; one loose policy I'd had was that all major early BC politicians (and in his case, major landowner) should get "high"; he was also a cabinet minister I'm pretty sure. Oh, OK - "mid" - or did you rate that one? All those kinds of guys should at least get "mid". I just had a look through that Early Canadian Online J.B. Kerr book I referenced for you, thinking I'd find something on Andrew Charles Elliott....to my surprise, he's not in there, unless the Premiers are listed separately and I haven't found that section yet....one thing that caught my eye is it seems in the 19th Century they used "MPP" instead of MLA, also.....thinking of writing an article on the pre-party system/era in BC, as I've found a number of interesting contemporary passages defending it and expressing discontent with the impending imposition of the party system (by Joly de Lotbiniere, after the Turner-Semlin-Martin-Dunsmuir multiple fiasco....).Skookum1 04:50, 27 January 2007 (UTC)

Hi; just a reminder that googlemaps' labelling is not necessarily what's gazetted; what's gazetted is what's on Basemap/LRDWC at maps.gov.bc.ca. Bivouac/RT invented a parse of basemap which opens Basemap at the given coordinates of the entry, be it a pass or peak; but it routes through bivouac's php system so you can't simply copy the link on an entry page; must be simple but I don't know enough code how to do it. Anyway, while googleearth/googlemaps opens up on something labelled Sechelt Rapids, remember that their data set is also user-generated content like Wikipedia (I know, because I've added a few things...); it's basemap/LRDWC that's the archival naming system, which should be the primary, especiall because of the user-generated content issue at googlemaps.Skookum1 01:33, 28 January 2007 (UTC)

Saw your fixes to the Fountainview Academy section on there, which I've redlinked for fairly obvious reasons; and they do have a story worth a telling - their annual fall feast invites everyone in the valley, from town and the reserves, and it's an international place as well as connected into a lot of the small ranches and farms up and down Highway 12; they're just another element in Lillooet; but even as a separate educational institution, like

Hi there Ken. You have probably watchlisted some of Vancouver Island so will see the new category adds stemming from the Category:Vancouver Island creation today. It seems sensible that the new category may need further subdivision at some point down the line, but at the moment I've been throwing in anything I can find/think of geographical, historical and personal (people). Plenty of communities not in it yet, and still debating whether to add things like Neighbourhoods of Victoria, for example. So if it occurs to you as you peruse, have a look at the bottom of Van Isle pages to see whether they're added to the category, and add as needed, if you feel inclined. good article has been placed on hold. It hasn't failed because it's basically a good article, but there are some minor changes or clarifications needed to be addressed. If these are fixed within seven days, the article will pass, otherwise it will fail. See Talk:BX (sternwheeler)

If there's none to be found, then there's none to be found. To be perfectly honest, that would be ideal rather than necessary; there are enough positive references to suggest that there wasn't very much criticism. I've had a look at the article and it does look considerably better. I'll re-review tomorrow if you want and pass it if it's reached GA standard. I added it and yes, it does apply to everything in infobox. It's a short summary of all the ship's characteristics, as well as the launch date, builder, owners, captain and demise.CindyBo^talk 17:31, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

I've had another look today and I still see quite a few unreferenced statements. For example, the first section in the "Construction" section. I'm aware that reference #3 may apply to all of this, but it's not made implicitly clear. Ideally, each claim needs to be sourced. For example:

• "Captain Browne worked with Alexander Watson throughout the design and construction phases of the BX."
• "Watson purchased the BX's boiler, engines and other equipment from the Chicago Marine Ironworks Company"
• "...the heaviest piece was less than 10,000 lbs..."

These are only examples, but it shows what I'm ideally looking for. I wouldn't necessarily expect every single thing to be sourced for GA standard, but pretty much all of it does have to be. Hope this helps. Mouse Nightshirt | talk 19:44, 14 July 2007 (UTC)

I added 12-15 more references, including a few from local newspapers to back up the primary sources. I think I have it covered, but if I don't, let me know and I can add more. I was looking at one sentence in the 5th paragraph of the route section: At the time it seemed the future of upper Fraser sternwheelers seemed assured And the very last sentence: In Prince George a model of the BX .... Now they don't look right to me, and I can't cite them, really, although they're true. If you feel they're original research, I can erase them. Not a problem at all, it's great to be able to discuss improvements with authors of articles calmly! In reference to your question there, basically, anything that can be challenged/called into question needs a citation. If you can't provide one, then unfortunately, it has to go. I mean, you could take a photo of it, but you'd need a reference to say that the model is the ship rather than randomly being named the same. Silly I know, but that's how it is. You've mostly got this article nailed anyway, but for future reference, I advise you have a look at
