Hi there! Welcome, always happy to have a contributor to the Malazan pages. Please note that extended quotes are not really appropriate for wikipages, though references are definitely useful. If you would like some help with the reference or citation tags, I'd be glad to provide it. I took the opportunity to tweak the

style, as well as the rest of the entries. WLU 20:07, 16 October 2007 (UTC)[reply

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:The Lees of Laughter's End.jpg

Thanks for uploading

Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline
is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 06:06, 29 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Quotes

Please note that quotes are not generally used in wikipedia pages. The sister project Wikiquotes is the preferred venue for extensive quotations. WLU 00:57, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Also, the use of blockquotes to separate text is unusual and non-standard (see the
manual of style for more info). Sub-headings are separated by the use of different levels of section headings, represented by increasing the number of equal signs which precede and follow section titles. WLU 01:10, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply

Category

In case you were not aware, there is a Category:Malazan Book of the Fallen which lists all pages with the (ideally it should also list all the pages having something to do with the MBotF.

Incidentally, the reason I keep removing the quotes from pages is that

deleted
from Wikipedia. Unlike Encyclopedia Malazica, quotes should not be used to 'prove' points of the novels.

One really helpful thing which needs to be done on wikipedia regards the MBotF is to create character and geography entries. I can help if you'd like, particularly with formatting and wiki-specific stuff. Currently most of the pages are heavily 'in-universe', meaning you can't understand them unless you've read the books. In example, there's references to Anomander Rake scattered across the pages and throughout the 'Races' page, but there's no real discussion of who he is, where he comes from, what he has done, his impact on the novels, Dragnipur, etc. etc. etc. It's an enormous job and one I've pretty much given up on doing on my own. However, with another dedicated contributor, it would be much easier. Just a thought. WLU 14:46, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Malazan stuff

There's a reply for you on my talk page (or will be shortly). I'm replying there so I know I've replied to all your questions.

Incidentally, if you're having trouble uploading a book cover, there are ways around - basically you can steal a book cover from Amazon and upload it, with a fair use rationale that allows you to only use the image on one page, the page of the book itself. That means you have to create the LoLE page before bots will stop deleting the image. WLU 10:53, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

G'day,
I'm not sure what you were trying to do with this series of edits, but I suggest you work with tests and templates on a
sub page
rather than a mainspace page, and paste it to the mainspace once it is perfected.
Also, you may be making more work for yourself than you need - the Malazan template MBF placed on the bottom of each Malazan page contains much of the information you may be trying to add to the page. I'm not sure the difference between templates at the top of the page versus the bottom, but it's possible the template may be better placed at the top instead. If this is the case, a better solution may be to reshape and move the template rather than create a new one. WLU 14:58, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Was it Kimloc that allowed the BB to ascend? I was quite sure it was Paran's blessing at the end of Memories of Ice. Kimloc allowed them to complete the song by returning to Raraku and fight in the battle with Fiddler, but I thought it was Paran's blessing that was responsible for their ascension as a group. I'll check up in The Bonehunters tonight if I remember. WLU 17:35, 19 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
There's a reply for you on my talk page. Also, it might be worth discussing which MBotF entries to create next - if the character is too minor, it could be sent to
The Crippled God (after moving the old page to The Crippled God (novel)). WLU 17:56, 19 October 2007 (UTC)[reply
]
Oops, you didn't create the Mancy page. Well, it's there if you wanted to look at it. We could use the format there on other character pages, lead, description, history, appearances. Much like the Races page, minor characters could have a super-heading for each character, followed by several standard sub-headings. Also, could you have a look to make sure I got the character history right? I said he was from Saltoan, and I think I'm wrong. Plus I said he was addicted to heroin. Also not positive. WLU 18:18, 19 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Careful...

Hi,

Just a note - be careful with the pages you create and the wikilinks you place. Generally redlilnks (uncreated articles) are put in only when you are about to create the article itself. Also, some of the redlinks you are creating are somewhat inapproprate in my mind. Creating pages for all the Houses in the Fatid won't work in my mind - there is not enough detail in the books to fill up these articles sufficiently, they'd be resigned to stub-hood for their entire existence. There are solutions, such as the one undertaken for the Races page. Also, Baudin shouldn't really have a page in my mind, since he's a relatively minor character appearing in small parts of only two books. Main pages are for big characters that take up large portions of the plot, and apear in many if not most of the books. Emancipor Reese is a similar example. Characters like these are better gathered into a 'Minor charactes of the MBotF' page, or into pages like

deletion work and to try to ensure the pages end up of a high standard that is acceptable to most wikipedians. Fictional characters already lead a somewhat tenuous existence on wikipedia. But that's just my suggestions, and I do appreciate the effort to expand the pages, good job. WLU 16:05, 22 October 2007 (UTC)[reply
]

I made some changes to the info you left on my talk page, it's a possible structure and lead sentence for the
High House Shadow page. Though which is better, to break up articles by House, or realm? The ideal goal is to have a structure that can draw multiple pages together in the most efficient way, that is sufficiently comprehensive that we don't need many exceptions. WLU 17:12, 22 October 2007 (UTC)[reply
]

Stuff

I made some changes to the template, what do you think? MBF WLU 16:14, 24 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Also, a style point - if you type Cats, it leads to a redirect, since the main article is found at Cat. You could type Cats to get to the page directly, but if you type Cats, it gives you the same appearance, but you don't have to use a piped link (i.e. any letters after the closing brackets turn blue and become part of the wikilink). I bring this up because in this edit, you turned Ian Cameron Esselmont's into Ian Cameron Esselmont's, when all you needed was Ian Cameron Esselmont's. Saves on typing.
Also, beware of
overlinking
. You don't need to link every instance of an author's name. The only time it's for sure that you link is the first instance in an article. After that, it's a judgement call, but every single time a name appears isn't necessary and is kinda frowned upon.
Final point, I tried to re-work the table of Warrens - what do you think? I tried to have the official name, alternate names and description. The last three entries (Fener, Forkrul Assail and Toblakai) didn't really work in this structure, so I just split them off of the table and kept them as text. Otherwise, their Warren's had no name, their other names were the race names, and the descriptions didn't really do anything. I tried to think of a way of having everything in one table but this was the best I could come up with. WLU 17:39, 24 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hi,
I'm curious about your rational for this change (a reversion or undo of a previous edit)? My biggest objection would be the placement of information about Baudin in the Soldier section, though there's also the issue about the extra information for the characters (should be restricted to individuals in their roles as extra info for most of the characters is better placed in their own articles, without speculation) and the wording should be in keeping with
WP:NOT. Would you mind if I reverted/undid? WLU 17:50, 25 October 2007 (UTC)[reply
]

Copyvio

Note that

copyright violations are taken very seriously on wikipedia - pasting text directly from websites that aren't GNU-compatible is a very bad thing. I've re-written the Toll the Hounds synopsis. Copyvios can result in blocks, text deletion and in extreme cases I think whole pages can get deleted. FYI. WLU 19:05, 24 October 2007 (UTC)[reply

Tiste characters

Good idea for organizing minor characters, also a good job on populating it. I moved the page to

Tiste characters in the Malazan Book of the Fallen
. Why couldn't Erikson have picked a short title?

Brief notes? I took pages and read with a highlighter :) WLU 13:22, 28 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Note that the use of the <br> isn't necesary - a single blank line between pages ensures they are separated and start as new paragraphs. Also note that having two blank lines leaves more whitespace than on most other pages, and looks kinda weird to my eyes. I've also made a couple changes to the Tiste characters page - have a look. WLU 13:44, 28 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Divination?

Regards MBF, is there a better superheading than Deck and Tiles? It's not particularly meaningful for a non-fan (something rife across all the MBF pages), any ideas for a higher heading? I was thinking Divination, but the DOD and ToH are far more than that since they link so closely with the Ascendants. WLU (talk) 15:55, 17 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It's always an option to put both under the same headings as ascendants (after creating it, since it's a missing section). Ascendants is one of the areas that is neglected on the page, particularly since Erikson's conception is pretty different from the conventional Gods of fantasy lit. The section would also neatly tie DoD and TotH together, perhaps all could be placed under magic... I can't think of a better solution, but if you do, I look forward to reading it. WLU (talk) 16:21, 17 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Comments

What do you think we should do for the MBF template? There's 2, you and Jeffsul seem to disagree over what's best, he likes the first new one, you like the 2nd (I think). Let me/us know your preference so we can sub in the new template, but use our/my talk pages please! The template testing page gets lost in my watchlist since I don't get the big orange box when it is changed.

I agree that MM and Otataral could be moved into the ME and magic pages respectively. Good suggestion on otataral, I hadn't thought of this. I'll post something similar on Jeffsul's page. WLU (talk) 20:36, 20 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Numbers

Numbers indicate number of characters added or removed as compared to the previous version. If someone corrects the inversion of two letters (i.e. from huose to house) the net result is 0. If you add a paragraph, it'll be an extra number of characters probably numbering in the hundreds to thousands. If said paragraph is then deleted, the same number will appear, but as a subtraction. WLU (talk) 13:44, 27 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

De nada. I like answering questions, so feel free to drop them on my talk page at any point in time. WLU (talk) 15:04, 27 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oops, I read too quickly, I thought you had created a page for humans. Ignore my comment, I'd say this is legit (though still a bit crufty; for me the word isn't pejorative BTW, Sci-Fi and Fantasy fans tend towards crufty, and I include myself in this group). I'll review. I'm thankful for you and Jeff 'cause I spread my time pretty widely across wiki and it's nice to see that my 'pet' pages that I never seem to get around to expanding, have some dedicated contributors. WLU (talk) 15:22, 27 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
One point, review
MOS:TITLE - the only characters that should be capitalized in a title, either page or section, are proper names and the very first character. WLU (talk) 15:24, 27 March 2008 (UTC)[reply
]
Second point -
pipe it, or the # will show up in the link. Check out the other MOS changes I've made. Sorry about the choppy feedback, I edit and reply as things catch my attention. WLU (talk) 15:29, 27 March 2008 (UTC)[reply
]
99.99999% certain that it's first only. MOS:CAPS is the place to go for things like this. Another thing you might want to watch for - the sections are meant to hold information about the people you are describing, not the plot they are involved in (see
WP:NOT#PLOT). I'm trimming a fair amount, you'll see in a second. WLU (talk) 15:40, 27 March 2008 (UTC)[reply

Great job by the way! The image is an excellent one in my mind, I love that it combines the three different cover images (even the horrible, horrible abortion of a US cover, what a bag of shit). Are you going to do the same for the other books? And is there any way I could convince you to do something similar for A Song of Ice and Fire? WLU (talk) 12:56, 30 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I'm not sure the image will survive fair use - you've got it labeled as a book cover, but it's not. I'm not sure what image use you could use, and I believe I've mentioned that I hate image use. WLU (talk) 13:38, 19 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You could ask about the page's copyright status at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. I'd ask, but I don't know enough of the details of the image - it's a scan? From one of the later editions?
Also quickly looking at the page, the titles you are choosing for the section are appropriate for a more 'poetic' venue, on wikipedia I'd chose much more neutral titles. WLU (talk) 13:44, 19 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Its the inside map, but with color done by a fan who claimed no rights to it. Found the template for the Book cover and just used it. Figured it had the same rationale. Krmarshall (talk) 16:16, 19 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:MALAZ-Darujhistan.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

 1. Go to

 2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before

Races of the MBotF

I'm going to divide the Races into five separate pages: the Forkrul Assail, Jaghut, K'Chain Che'Malle, T'lan Imass, and The Tiste. I get the feeling there will be objections, but I think they need/deserve it. Can I count on your support? Alan16 (talk) 16:07, 25 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Three pages sounds like a good idea. And the titles are long, but there isn't a lot that can be done about them. I'll make a start soon. Alan16 (talk) 08:54, 26 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'm going to publish the articles today/tonight, and I was wondering what you think should happen to the other articles. For example, the Tiste characters page isn't really necessary as it will be basically copied into the new one, so really it should basically be deleted or redirected to the new page. I'm not sure what/how to do that, so any help would be good. I'll drop you a line when I'm finished writing. Should be in a couple of hours. Alan16 (talk) 01:42, 8 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I've created the page
Foreign Races from the Malazan Book of the Fallen series. I thought this was a better title than Tiste... because it allowed the inclusion of the Elient. Alan16 (talk) 00:45, 9 March 2009 (UTC)[reply

So I'm going to wait and see what the response to the article is. If it's good/neutral/non-existent then I'll create the other two. I also decided that it would be a good idea to do some redirections, so:
Foreign Races from the Malazan Book of the Fallen series
.
Also, because I thought about the name change after I had written the
Foriegn Races from the Malazan Book of the Fallen series
as well. So that is quite a few links, and they all should go to the same place.
I'd be interested in your opinions on the article. Alan16 (talk) 01:12, 9 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
