Deleted my page

I appreciate you highlighting the fact that our company's wiki page is in violation of guidelines on promotional content. I'm happy to adjust as appropriate. However I see that you've deleted the page, without taking what would seem to be the more professional and community-spirited act of actually *communicating* your concern with the author.

Can you message me and let me know how to retrieve the page so that it can properly be revised to meet guidelines? And while you're there can you advise me on your authority? 2601:646:8580:A468:4513:4FEF:AA63:1533 (talk) 06:13, 1 March 2017 (UTC)

Since I don't know what page you're talking about, I can't be more specific, but when you go to the page title, it should bring up a notice that a page by that name was deleted. In that notice should be directions on how to recover the deleted draft. A few things, first, a word of advice: being insulting is never a good way to get folks to help you. Second, please read

Hi
WP:CITEKILL doesn't help an article either, it actually hurts, since editors think that the article's creator is trying to shore up a weak case of notability. I'd get rid of all PR pieces (like the 1st three references you use), any interviews, any references which are by Ameer, rather than about him. Few editors are going to wade through the numerous irrelevant sources you've included. Onel5969 TT me

Hello Onel5969, I am contacting you to ask what else I would need to change about the article in order to withdraw it from Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Steve Lacy (musician). I have redirected the article to The Internet (band), but like I said, let me know what else I would have to do to improve the article so that it won't be deleted. Thanks again. Bmegrl9113 (talk) 09:13, 2 March 2017 (UTC)

Hi Bmegrl9113 - It's a tad late for that. The time for this discussion was prior to it going to AfD, rather than simply edit-warring about making it a redirect. Once at AfD, as the template says, the article cannot be blanked (which is what making it a redirect does). To show notability, you must have several in-depth references from reliable, independent sources. Right now you have none. Twitter, YouTube (along with other sites like Facebook, imdb, and others), and Fader are not reliable sites. In addition, interviews are primary sources, and can't be used to show notability. References like the xxlmag are simply mentions, and don't go to notability. References like that are good to validate assertions made in the article, but don't help notability status. Regarding the AfD notice, it has to run it's course now. Sorry. Onel5969 TT me 11:12, 2 March 2017 (UTC)

Okay that's fine. I haven't been able to find any articles on him from sources that would be considered reliable, so it's best that the article be deleted. Bmegrl9113 (talk) 11:15, 2 March 2017 (UTC)

Hi there, I notice you tagged the above article for deletion under CSD A1. Note that this criteria specifically excludes non-English material, such as this article. In this case, it seems to be a coherent Arabic language biography of a politician, which I've logged instead at Wikipedia:Pages needing translation into English in the hopes that someone who knows Arabic better than I do can come along and salvage something from it. I know you're a good curator generally, so keep up the good work! Lankiveil (speak to me) 13:24, 3 March 2017 (UTC)

Kansan in Iowa - Hi. Simply because it doesn't meet Wikipedia's notability criteria. Very rarely will a local branch of an organization, or a governmental entity, will achieve notability on its own. Simply because something exists doesn't make it notable. The article was well done, simply didn't meet the criteria. Onel5969 TT me 11:29, 10 March 2017 (UTC)

I Was and some of the other Neal McCoy songs because "Songs that do not rise to notability for an independent article should redirect to another relevant article, such as for the songwriter, a prominent album or for the artist who prominently performed the song." If You Can't Be Good (Be Good at It) at least got a review in Billboard which gives the article a little more meat, but I could find no such thing for any of the other songs I redirected. They may have charted, but #35 on the country charts is barely a blip on the radar, unless it's a song that gained notoriety some other way (e.g. The Bumper of My SUV). Your deletion request for RoPeCast

Hi, there.

Could you shortly explain how you evaluate the Saarland state award for higher education as not notable? It is awarded by the government of a federal state of Germany.

Apart from that

WP:WEB
does not state the award needs to be "notable" it says "well-known" and "independent". The award is well-known and has been awarded for more than a decade. Apart from that there is the notability through secondary references, and news papers and radio stations have reported about it.

I would kindly ask you to reconsider, and I'm going to provide the other secondary references (radio ...)--

chris
12:06, 15 March 2017 (UTC)

Hi
Chrkl - I would argue that "well-known" is even a higher standard than notable. Notability on WP means that there exist enough in-depth sourcing about a subject to create an article on WP. There are many articles which meet notability criteria which are not well-known. The award is a regional educational award. I searched for references online for both RoPeCast and Saarland state award for higher education, and came up with virtually nothing. I hope that helps explain it. If you can source it better, of course it would be reconsidered, but please remember that the sourcing needs to be in-depth (not simply mentions), and from independent, reliable sources. It's prodded, which means that no action will be taken on it for seven days. Feel free to ask me to have another look at it. And remember, it's a prod, so you can contest it at any point (although, to be honest, I'd probably request an AfD discussion at that point). Onel5969 TT me
12:13, 15 March 2017 (UTC)
Thank you for your explanations. Let me address your arguments in the order you presented them...
  • I think the wording "well-known" was chosen intentionally not to re-use the notion to be defined "notability" or "notable". I thus consider it a Wikipedia-independent criterion and in no way higher or lower than these standards, but unrelated and having the semantic flexibility needed for its various applications throughout the notability guidelines. Otherwise its use would introduce a circular logic.
  • Furthermore you cannot apply Wikipedia's notability criteria to the award in order to judge the notability of the phenomenon in question. That would be introducing an inheritance dependency that is explicitly excluded in the guidelines (although the examples given work in a descendent fashion, I think this rule must hold in an inverted manner as well in order to be coherent).
  • A regional award... Any award issued by any federally-organised subordinate entity is by definition regional. Would you argue the same way if it was the state of California that awarded the prize? And if you make a difference there, would that in turn be more notable then a prize awarded by the state of Rhode Island? I think that's an unjustified focus on 'body size' not to mention any parts thereof ;-)
  • Secondly how can anything language-related not be regional? As an offer to learners of English as a foreign language it is very unlikely that "well-known" can ever stretch to large areas of the world in an 'un-regional' fashion, namely those speaking English natively.
  • With respect to your search for references ... No offense, but don't you think the "google it" approach is a tad to simplistic and superficial to be a decision criterion here, even if we are dealing with an online publication as the lemma? Have you for example considered that a prize awarded by a German executive organ is very unlikely to officially carry an English name? Do me the favour and compare to a search for Landespreis für Hochschullehre Saarland. Any search engine should be a lot more obliging if you use the appropriate search terms. ;-)
To summarise, I will not dispute the request for deletion, if I can't convince you. I have been working with the Wikipedia community long enough to have a realistic judgement of my chances, as an occasional contributor to the English branch, in an official nomination for deletion by a well-networked and active author. German Wikipedia, its rigorous approach to notability and its 'professional deleters' have taught me that lesson beyond any need for updates. -- 14:08, 15 March 2017 (UTC)
Well it's disappointing that you don't deem the arguments worth another reply. -- 08:47, 21 March 2017 (UTC)

Seeking clarification on "deleted" article

Hi! Am a new author trying to add further distinction to a topic ("file/folder encryption"). The article was rejected with the comment "Article on this subject already exists - please improve the existing article". Am not certain, but my reading of the comment indicates that the "file and folder encryption" article should be contained within the article "Filesystem-level_encryption". If this understanding is correct, am seeking to understand why "file and folder encryption" should be contained within "Filesystem-level_encryption" and not within other similar articles, including full disk encryption or database encryption, or even within potentially new articles on partition encryption, volume encryption or device-based encryption? Each of these types of encryption is capable of encrypting files, and except for database encryption that is their primary function. By adding this content, am trying to help clarify the distinction among the technologies used to encrypt "data at rest", as well as to help demonstrate the reasons for these differing technologies, and thus expand the currently available content. Of course, if the comment is indicating something else, please advise.

This clarification request refers to https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=File/folder_encryption&action=history

Hi
WP:MERGE discussion, wherein an overall comprehensive article could be written, which, imho, would be in the best interest of anyone using Wikipedia researching these topics. When an article reaches a certain length, then that becomes a time when certain segments are broken off and covered in more detail in their own articles. (For an example, take a look at almost any "city" article, Phoenix, Arizona is an example, and there are sections which have become so long, they have been split off into their own articles. Hope this helps. Onel5969 TT me
12:36, 23 March 2017 (UTC)
Hi, and thanks for your helpful and comprehensive response to my question! Am very glad to read your comment "it appears that they represent very similar, if not identical concepts". That comment indicates that the newer article that I created does not sufficiently explain the differences. ;) Also, I agree with your comment of "an overall comprehensive article could be written” - in fact this has begun with both Encryption_layer_in_storage_stack and Encryption_software. Though they may need to be merged and/or reworked somewhat, each of these articles lend support to the proposed article. So, while I wholeheartedly agree with the Wikipedia policy that older content should be improved, my contention is that these forms of encryption are different - namely because the software products are 1) are applied at different layers in the storage stack, and 2) are not able to be used at different layers for which they were not designed - per the current Wikipedia articles referenced. One factor that may be leading you to believe that the current and proposed pages are "similar, if not identical" is the product from Microsoft that is called the Encrypting "File System" (EFS). As the first line in the EFS article states that EFS is a "feature" within the actual file system - NTFS, it's clear that EFS itself is not a file system. Further, with EFS the file/directory encryption is enabled by the user via Windows explorer, in this respect it seems more like a Windows application and not a file system - much like copying or moving a file within Explorer is not a file system. That's why I included EFS within the file/folder article and not the file system article. Thanks for your kind comment on the quality of the article I submitted, and also for the opportunity to help create content on Wikipedia! User93454235 (talk) 15:04, 23 March 2017 (UTC)

He has received a record for the most reposts on social media of his account, and here is the article from Guinness Website: http://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/news/2015/6/lead-singer-wang-junkai-of-chinese-boyband-tfboys-gets-record-breaking-number-of-386087 . Also, if I better not edit it by my self, then can I ask for your help on editing?KARRYCRAB (talk

Thank you!

Thanks for reviewing my pages! I know a lot are still in stub/start form, they'll be improved over time. I noticed you put tags for more inline citations required on the pages where a history of the library system was included. My question: if there was only one source about the library's history how might you suggest finding more citations to supplement the section? I appreciate your help! SEMMENDINGER (talk) 13:50, 23 March 2017 (UTC)

Hi Semmendinger - Thanks for your work. I have no problems with stub or very short articles. Sometimes that's all you can find on the internet. Lord knows I've written more than my fair share of stubs (mostly geo articles, about very small populated places – but I feel strongly about the gazetteer component of Wikipedia). Your articles make it easy on a reviewer: well written, well structured, well formatted. So thank you for your diligence.
Regarding sourcing, other editors may disagree, but my rule of thumb is that every paragraph which asserts a fact should be footnoted. Sometimes it is simply re-using the existing source, which is acceptable. You also might try newspapers.com. You might find some sources there. If you do use Newspapers (which I use all the time), check out Wikipedia:Newspapers.com. Good luck and keep up the good work. Onel5969 TT me 13:55, 23 March 2017 (UTC)
I appreciate your kind words. I have really enjoyed trying to establish some semblance of uniformity among the articles I create, so I'm glad you find the formatting pleasing! A follow up question, and one thing I struggled with while making the page. You said each paragraph should be footnoted, and I'm inclined to agree, but is it overkill to have, say, eight paragraphs in a row with the same footnote? Or is that just being diligent? I'd be interested to hear what you think - and in the meantime I'll make use of that source, thank you! SEMMENDINGER (talk) 14:01, 23 March 2017 (UTC)

I did not intend to revert your reversion here. I don't know what happened. I was looking at a different change. Not sure if I made a mistake or it was some technical bug. Thanks for fixing. MB 17:56, 23 March 2017 (UTC)

Hi MB - no worries. I almost always find myself in agreement with your edits, so it's unusual when I feel the need to make a correction. Take care. Onel5969 TT me 19:11, 23 March 2017 (UTC)

Draft:The Valiants

See new title. The notability of the group is not questioned in Philadelphia, nor in the PFD, see new cites from the archives of the city council recognizing 50 years, or the museum recognizing the city's first AA Commissioner. Maybe you're seeing this from the perspective that doesn't allow for such groups similar to the shomrim or hibernians, could it be the lack of parade pics?CaptJayRuffins (talk) 14:02, 26 March 2017 (UTC)

ThatGirlTayler, took me a few days to figure out how to use Audacity. But now that I have a rudimentary knowledge of it, I'll record from time to time. I only found out about this project by chance, another editor put a request on one of the pages on my watchlist. Is there a list somewhere of articles which need to be recorded? If one catches my fancy, I'll take care of it. Onel5969 TT me

Proposed deletion of Pastor López page

Howdy,

I read your proposal for deletion of the Pastor López wiki, and have since added citations, and removed content that I could not find references for. I'm relatively new to the community, and did completely understand the rules regarding biographies of living people, and will read up a bit more on appropriate citaion.

I was able to track down some interviews he did on TV. He was more relevant in the 70's and 80's than he is today, but sources from that era in Latin America are hard to come by. Do you have any other suggestions for how I can prove he is relevant? He has pages in Spanish and German, and a number of his songs are staples for latin DJs and widely identifiable by Latinos of multiple generations. Dmerker (talk) 02:34, 28 March 2017 (UTC)
Hi Dmerker - foreign language sources are perfectly acceptable. Please remember to put the language= parameter in the citation. Have you tried looking him up on Google Books? Beware of using YouTube references, they are not reliable. I sympathize with your difficulty in referencing. Believe it or not, I have the same difficulty with sourcing American films of the 1950s. I think you've reached the notability threshold, but don't stop looking. Another 1 or 2 in-depth sources wouldn't hurt. Onel5969 TT me 02:45, 28 March 2017 (UTC)
I think the page should stay.

Help with Maritz, LLC article

Hello! On behalf of Maritz, LLC, I'm trying to update the company's Wikipedia article. I've submitted an edit request here and posted requests for help at WikiProject Companies, the Articles for Creation help desk, WikiProject United States, and the talk pages of several individual Wikipedia editors, but so far no one has responded to the edit request to add a corporate overview section and information about Maritz's current and former subsidiaries.

I've proposed text for the article here. I realize this is a proposed article expansion, and not an Articles for Creation submission, but this major addition to the article is similar to an Articles for Creation review, so I'm reaching out to a few Articles for Creation participants, such as yourself, to see if someone will review the proposed addition for accuracy and neutrality. Is this something you might be able to help with? If you are not interested, that's okay, I'm just not sure where else to ask for help for the edit request I submitted over a month ago. Thanks! Why did you delete my article?

I created an article (Alva "Gunny" Bricker) on one of the cast of the TV Series Major Dad and was in the process of adding more details to this as well as other similar articles however before I could do this you deleted it with no warning or thorough explanation. Again I would ask why did you deleted my article especially when there are others of less 'notability' and substance as found under other TV Series articles. I would appreciate your feedback and restoring the page if you wouldn't mind. I am new to editing but aim to do things as thoroughly and respectfully as possible and would appreciate the same in return. Thanks Doctordrew (talk) 05:28, 28 March 2017 (UTC)

Zinaida Gilels

Hi Onel5969. Thank you for letting me know about your proposal for deletion of my article on Zinaida Gilels on the grounds of no notability. I've added some info to the article and I hope that it's now meeting the criteria of notability. There are not much info about this professor exist online, as it seems that no one cared to put it there. Although she was pretty impactful in the music world. Thank you again. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gemi315 (talkcontribs) 08:48, 28 March 2017 (UTC)

Hi Onel5969, you proposed the deletion of Giuseppe Soda. You were right because I didn't put any reference :). I just made some changes and added a few references, how can I know if it's okay now? (I know it can always be and will be improved!) Guyapetta (talk) 09:56, 30 March 2017 (UTC)

Institut d'étude des questions juives

Based on my understanding of italics policy for foreign expressions, I've reverted your change at Institut d'étude des questions juives. If there's something I'm missing, please revert back, and link to a policy in the ES.

Your explanation in the

edit summary for your removal of {{italic title
}} was "per mos". But that was unhelpful; there are many MOS policies and pages, and your edit summary did not link to any of them. I was not able to find a policy that supported your edit.

What I was able to find about it is this:

MOS:FOREIGNITALIC
: Wikipedia prefers italics for phrases in other languages and for isolated foreign words that do not yet have everyday use in non-specialized English. Use the native spellings if they use the Latin alphabet (with or without diacritics)—otherwise Anglicize their spelling. This applies to French, so I've used the original spelling, italicized.

While we're at it: on the same article, you added two hats, {{

Translated}} note on the Talk page, as required for attribution. That's because I'm still reviewing the translation. Mathglot (talk

[edit conflict]

I understand what you are saying, but I can't find the policy for it, and I suspect many others can't, either. Many, many articles which have foreign phrases in the title are italicized, and they're probably interpreting the guidelines the same way as I am. If you're correct about this, then at least two policy pages need to be changed, not to mention hundreds or thousands of articles. Mathglot (talk) 03:20, 31 March 2017 (UTC)
The policy you link to supports my view. Mathglot (talk) 03:22, 31 March 2017 (UTC)
