Myst Articles

I have given you access to all of the Myst articles you requested with the exception of D'ni Kings and this was because that article had no content whatsoever. Only a single edit took place before the article was CSD'd and that was to redirect it to List of D'ni kings. If you have any other questions or need any other help, feel free to let me know. One point though, seeing that this was not technically a deletion review, a better place to have made this request would probably have been the Administrator Noticeboard, it probably would have been responded fast to as well. Have a good evening. Trusilver 00:44, 22 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

In addition to the page content, I have also userfied the page histories to conform to the GFDL (in case you decide to merge any content from those pages to any articles or reintroduce them to the mainspace after improvements). Also, I was able to find the page history of D'ni Kings (it had been moved to List of D'ni kings) and have userfied that article as well. Black Falcon (Talk) 01:59, 22 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Team-Up

Looks like the task force won't happen, but I'm a lone-wolf editor anyhow :P I've begun the cleanup and finding of sources for

Myst (video game)- looks like there's enough development info to use, and lots on legacy, but the real issue is we have to find reviews for the game, which are most likely off the net from print publications way back when. Anyway, cheers, Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 23:14, 2 May 2008 (UTC)[reply
]

Sounds like a plan, a userpage to keep track of progress would help. I'm thinking that we should first try and get all the video game articles up to GA/FA, and also cleanup, merge, and organize the in-universe info (the characters and such.) The good news is, the newer the game, the more information there is to find, so it would be as hard to find reviews! Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 21:42, 4 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I started drafting up a
feature topic skeleton for the games, so we can keep track of our progress towards a unified topic. See it here. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 21:58, 6 May 2008 (UTC)[reply
]
That looks pretty cool! I've actually been working a bunch of overtime for the past week, so I haven't had a lot of time to work on much so far—except a little bit while I'm at work. ;)
I noticed that you deleted
prod}} tag to it). I'd like to save as much useful information as possible from these terrible articles and make sure it gets put into other appropriate articles. This way we don't have to rewrite a section from scratch, and we can copy/paste/edit useful parts to fit into another article.
I have quite a few previously deleted pages relating to Myst in my Userspace. Please look at the section on my user page for the list of articles I have. There might be some useful references in some of them (but somehow I doubt they have ANY references…). You can go ahead and comment on them, like I did for Releeshahn if you'd like, or make up a different way to do it. Commenting on them helps me keep track of my progress, but you don't have to. OranL (talk) 22:33, 6 May 2008 (UTC)[reply
]
Don't worry, Star Fissure was just an obvious *dum dum* page, but if you want me to I can always go grab the source at any time (ah, the privileges of an admin! :P) I'm going to start trying to find all the Myst-related articles and see what needs to be stuck together- right now I'm eyeing ]

It looks like you're going to town on the actual video game articles (e.g. Myst, Riven, etc.) so I'm going to work on the more in-universe stuff like the characters and Ages.

  • I'm thinking of actually just compiling all of the characters alphabetically into one big article and then making lists with the names sorted differently by Major/Minor characters, by game/book first appearing in, etc.
  • I'm also thinking of doing a similar thing with all the locations in the series: one article sorted alphabetically with full descriptions and lists sorted other ways.

What do you think? — OranL (talk) 22:13, 17 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds like a plan. None of the characters can really stand on their own, so merging them together is a capital idea. As you've said, I'm basically going to focus on the games (next will be Riven!) so if you can work on the universe we can whip these articles into proper shape! :) Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 18:09, 18 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've gotten a little sidetracked improving I Love Bees, but I'm making headway in Riven (development fleshing out and cohesive reception is really the major stuff.) One problem is I can't find a good-quality screenshot for the game; considering the graphics are one of the chief commented features, we really need something clear and representative. Do you have the game so we can take a raw shot? Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 21:11, 23 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry it took so long to respond, but my computer's in the shop. I believe I do have the game, just let me know which areas need screenshots and I'll try to grab them. I'll have to find the game and get my computer back from the repair guys first, so it might be a few days before we can really get to work on this part. — OranL (talk) 17:46, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
A good image for the gameplay section was what I was looking for. I have a decent one of Prison island, but if you find a better one with a nicer view or something, that would be great. Some production shots, if you have the version with 'The Making of Riven', might also be good. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 18:02, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Reorganization

I've created a

Myst canon, and merge all the characters into Characters of Myst. I'm pretty sure there's not enough 3rd-party information to justify an "Ages of..." article, so I say drop it. I've also developed a skeleton for what I hope will be a good series article. Comment there or make changes! Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 14:50, 26 May 2008 (UTC)[reply
]

query

Maybe you can clear this up. Who created the Age of Myst? I’ve seen it as Atrus in publications (probably just erroneous, based on the games, not the novels) but both Catherine and Ti’ana are claimed to have written it in separate places. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 17:24, 6 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

From my understanding in the epilogue of the book "
Myst: The Book of Atrus", Ti'ana wrote the age of Myst. I don't remember what Catherine's part in it was, but I know that Atrus did not write it. I will confirm this tonight after I get home from work. I'll leave the exact quote from the book right below this. — OranL (talk) 22:27, 9 June 2008 (UTC)[reply

Ok thanks! Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 22:34, 9 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • "I should have known at once that Myst was not Catherine's. But how was I to know otherwise? I had thought Anna lost. Lost forever." — From the epilogue of
    Myst: The Book of Atrus.
    That is the entire paragraph. It's not stated explicitly, but I think that it is clear that Atrus has been told that Anna (Ti'ana) made Myst. Will that work for what you needed? — OranL (talk) 01:06, 10 June 2008 (UTC)[reply
    ]
Just to keep my facts straight, yes. I'll worry about page numbers when I have to start sourcing the fiction :P Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 01:19, 10 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

One more thing. When you have a chance can you run through the plot summaries for

Myst V. As I’ve never played either of them (I am assuming you have) any fixes would be appreciated. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 16:53, 12 June 2008 (UTC)[reply
]

I can take care of Myst IV, but I haven't yet finished V. Shouldn't be a problem though, because I work at Cyan; someone here should know the plot pretty well. OranL (talk) 19:13, 12 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You work at Cyan? Cool.. but wait, then shouldn’t you already know all the plot? Talk about a lazy employee :P Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 19:37, 12 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I just started working here in January though, so I have an excuse...or something like that. — OranL (talk) 19:49, 12 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Excuses, excuses... :P still really cool. Get your coworkers to look it over, if you want, to. Always good to be criticized by the pros :) Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 19:56, 12 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm already trying to get Tony Fryman, the President and legal guy at Cyan, to give clearance for screenshots from Myst, Riven, and URU, similar to {{ubisoft-screenshot}}. He really likes the idea and is looking over the legal stuff, so we shouldn't have to worry about writing fair-use documents for each screenshot soon. — OranL (talk) 01:54, 13 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Cool. I wasn't sure how the Ubisoft permissions would apply to Cyan's games (I think I put them under the free license, but I was going to check with them specifically to cover our bases.) Tell him also that he can specifically freely license only the screenshots we have in the articles, so they don't have to worry about any random joe grabbing their images. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 13:04, 13 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Since we're still working on the articles, maybe we can try to just slide any current and future screens under the radar for now, and once we've got all the screenshots that will be needed and the articles are mostly completed, then we can go ahead and get the license for only those pics. Any others that we need after that time we could just do a fair-use. That way I'm not asking him like every day, "Uh, so we got like two more screens. Can you go ahead and approve those?" I think he's kind of busy... ;) — OranL (talk) 17:39, 13 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, that's a good idea. I think I'm going to add another one to Riven, another to Exile, and swap the development ones in both IV and V, but otherwise I'm pretty happy with them. 138.88.246.156 (talk) 17:50, 13 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

So that means there's three for Myst, two for both myst II, III, IV, and V: so 11 images total, ideally. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 17:52, 13 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, and remember, Myst III, IV, and V are Ubisoft-published and so they're covered under {{ubisoft-screenshot}}. — OranL (talk) 18:29, 13 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yeppers, and those should all have the proper liscence already (at least all I uploaded.) So that means only 5. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 18:39, 13 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Oh wait, I'm forgetting that we have screenshots of characters like Gehn too. I'll have to draw up a complete list, I guess. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 18:40, 13 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Let me know if you want to split up the work. My computer should be getting back from HP tomorrow or Monday (I'm at work right now... ) — OranL (talk) 20:15, 13 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I figure you can stay on top of the images since you have the connections :P I'm continuing on cleaning up Myst 3, 4, and 5, and I'm getting started on Uru soon... the page is kinda messy right now, it'll take some time to make heads and tails of it. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 21:17, 13 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, I noticed you speedily deleted this image. Can you please undelete this image? I have license information to add to it ({{ubisoft-screenshot}}) that will make it okay for use on Wikipedia. Thank you! — OranL (talk) 19:13, 16 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Done. Remember to re-add it to the article it was in and remove the tags after you do that. Melesse (talk) 02:13, 17 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Your idea

I responded at the workshop page. While I've done it with lots of games in the past, i'm not sure if it will fit with any or all of the Myst games, but if you rough something up we can see how it would work. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 12:05, 1 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re:
Myst Online

Yeah, the multiplayer is a total train wreck. From the sources I've been looking at, we might be able to merge the article into Uru, but first I was to clean up Uru. I'm working on Myst IV and V, once those are done I'm going to sit down and look at the possibilities for Uru. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 11:46, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please see my message on this at David Fuchs' talk page. TalkIslander 20:30, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Also, (to David), I'd kinda appreciate it if you watch your language. I spent a great deal of time re-formatting the MOUL article last Thursday (see the edit history), and some issues aside (documented on your talk page), I was very proud of the finished product. To hear it then called a 'total train wreck' is a complete slap across the face. Thanks for that. TalkIslander 20:35, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oh no!

The ProQuest account no longer works! (I mean, I was going to abuse it for other articles, but luckily I've got 50-75% of the sources for Myst IV, V and URU locally stored...) Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 23:39, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I know; I sent you an email about it earlier today. I am sad about it! :( — OranL (talk) 23:47, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Lol! Well we should still be able to get some stuff from a public library if it comes down to it. Although having access to all that information right at your fingertips would have been nice too... — OranL (talk) 00:57, 30 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Article assessment

I noticed you've assessed an article or two... As someone who has read, looked over articles, and compared them to the quality and importance charts, I wonder if there is any formal requirements for assessing articles or if it's okay to just go ahead and assess them myself. If it's the later, that's good; if it's the former, then I hope I don't get in any trouble for the couple of articles I've done this to in the past, or those I'm about to. --coldacid (talk|contrib) 02:15, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I know, anyone can assess articles and assign importance. Just be sure to take a look at
FA, which require a more formal process to be rated as such. Please let me know if you need anything else! Also, be sure to read the documentation for whatever template you are adding the assessments to, as they are sometimes different. Usually, you just fill them in like this: {{WikiProject|class=Start|importance=High}} and that works (of course, vary the class and importance according to the specific article that you're assessing ). — OranL (talk) 16:18, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply
]
Awesome, thanks! So I've been doing the right thing all along. That's always good to know. --coldacid (talk|contrib) 17:35, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Various DRV's

Can I merge those 4 DRV's into one DRV for four articles? I think the issues will basically be all the same: fair use exemption or no. I won't do it if you don't want me to, though. Protonk (talk) 03:05, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes that would be fine. I just wanted to follow procedure so no one would yell at me. ;) — OranL (talk) 16:04, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Work and such

I personally use work for printed publications such as magazines, etc, and publishers for online sites. Whether or not that's right or not, I dunno, but I was told at a past FAC to do it that way, and aesthetically I prefer it anyhow :P Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 22:27, 2 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Oran, I originally wrote that bit on David's talk. I don't know what the FAC member was getting at regarding the above, but anyhoo, the way I see it is that "work" describes the publication, whereas "publisher" describes the company or whatever that actually does the publishing. It's all in what piece of data you are using. If you ever use the website address, such as CNN.com or any other given website, you should always use "work", since the material you are citing is part of that website's larger work. For example, FoxNews.com would be the work, and either Fox News Network or (more broadly) NewsCorp would be the publisher.
Regarding your specific query, you'd use "work=IGN.com" and "work=GameSpot.com", and for publisher (if you even wanted to use the field, as it is sometimes redundant and usually less-than-useful), "IGN Entertainment" and "CNET Networks", respectively. If you have any questions, feel free to drop a note on my talk page. Cheers! Huntster (t@c) 10:31, 4 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Question about Twinkle

Hey OranL!

I just want to make sure if an old version of my monobook javascript page is properly configured.

Also, if it is, then am I supposed to refresh the page every time I want to see the extra buttons/functions???

Thank you, ~ Troy (talk) 21:51, 13 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

PS I am currently using IE 7. ~ Troy (talk) 21:56, 13 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Your monobook.js is configured correctly. To see the changes, you need to hold down Control and click the refresh button (or press Ctrl+F5). If the script functions you added aren't showing up on another page, just do the Ctrl+F5 or Ctrl+Refresh and they should show up. If they still aren't showing up, go to Tools -> Internet Options. Under Browsing History, choose 'Delete...', then under Temporary Internet Files, choose 'Delete Files...', and that should fix it for good.
Also, if you're going to use the default settings for Twinkle (which I see you have copied into your monobook.js page), then you don't need to have those settings listed in your monobook.js. Although, if you might want to change those options in the future, leaving them in the monobook.js doesn't do any harm.
Let me know how it goes! — OranL (talk) 00:33, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the response. I saw it last night, but I really had to go to sleep, so here I am now.
I'm glad to know that I didn't misconfigure it. However, I don't think it works on IE — the instructions only said Firefox and other browsers.
Also, because I already deleted the browsing history yesterday and so forth, I guess that simply confirms that it doesn't operate on IE.
Thanks for the help, though. I highly appreciate that :) Regards, ~ Troy (talk) 16:25, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ah yes, I forgot about that. Sorry it doesn't work for you. :( Well I guess you can always just use Firefox! OranL (talk) 17:07, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No problem! I have already installed Lupin's anti-vandalism tool—which is still better than my old method of manually patrolling recent changes. Thanks again! ~ Troy (talk) 17:10, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Star Trek ratings

Feel free to change ratings you disagree with, but I am thinking that most characters, except for the big leads, aren't of the highest priority for the Star Trek project. Ones with high priorities are a much much smaller group than the lower priority ones. Articles on Star Trek as a whole, its popularity, the shows, the movies, Kirk/Spock/Picard are all high/top class articles, so if that is so, the others must by necessity be lower, otherwise the high/top ones don't get enough attention as there are too many of them, and keep us from focusing on the ones that are really top priority. Just my thoughts. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 20:32, 17 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Just a quick hi, to say I acted on your comment in Total Recall.

(And btw, people learning to type on typewriters were taught that two spaces after a sentence period made it easier to read. And since typewriters could not use proportional spacing, the two spaces emulated more expensive typesetting with customized spacing.
