A classic fashion victim since a child, always fascinated by how people looked and how fashion was something that was so intriguingand that sums up Patrick in a sentence.
He remembers his grandmother, Edna Pearl Given, made it a point to shop for new looks every season and how she paid particular attention to her shoes, handbags, hats, jewellery, hair and makeup. She always found it important to document how she looked and twice a year she would dress up in different outfits, making sure that her hair and makeup was just right and then have her picture taken in each new outfit.
A vision of his mom, Beverly June, being the quintessential June Cleaver type housewife (from the TV Series Leave It to Beaver), would make dresses from McCall's Magazine and little Chanel style suits from Vogue Patterns out of the most exquisite fabrics that looked so expensive and very "of the moment." Every week bothhis mother and grandmother would have their hair done - that was just how things were as he grew up. Going out for an evening or even going to church required time to get the look together and make sure everything looked just right and appropriate.
His father, Wayne,was a pharmacist and worked till he was 80 and dressed very professionally aways making sure his winged-tipped shoes were freshly polished. He was never seen without a tie and crisp white shirt under his suits.
His hair was cut every two weeks - always perfectly parted with the classic fifties coif looking just the part of the Jim Anderson character (played by Robert Young) in Father Knows Best. And of course, always wearing just enough cologne to make you understand that this was all part of being well-groomed....and my dear old dad!
From a very young age he would deliver lunches from the classic 50's-style soda-fountain which was part of the pharmacy to all the local hairdressers in town - and there were quite a few. He distinctly remembered Mr. Ron's Beauty Salon which was THE place to have your hair done. From the moment you walked into the salon the smell of hairspray was almost intoxicating and the chatter that filled the room created an almost addictive atmosphere. The looks that were being created followed exactly what were the current styles from demure "Jackie O" looks to glamorous I Dream of Jeannie updo creations.
As his father was a local businessman, Patrick had an account at the menswear shop in town. He was intrigued with the fabrics and styles and how he felt when he dressed in something that was new. The importance of "attention to detail" was being developed and he was appreciating every moment of his style education.
Patrick Swan is well-known both as TV Presenter and Personal Style Guru. His background is from the world of professional styling and hair and make-up for celebrity clients and high profile projects - celebrity shoots, album covers, fashion work in both New York and London.
Patrick Swan originally trained as a hairdresser in 1975 under Robert Pearson of Vidal Sassoon. He obtained his teaching diploma in 1981. Whilst in Florida Patrick worked as a hairdresser in salons as well as presenting a series of programmes on Public Television. These programs dealt with all aspects of the beauty industry focusing on new techniques. Patrick was responsible for researching all material, writing the programme outlines and co-hosting each show.
In 1982 Patrick moved to New York City to pursue a career as a hair and makeup artist in the fashion industry. During his fourteen years in New York he worked for an extensive list of editorial, advertising and celebrity clients. His many credits include the cover of Madonna’s Madonna the Fist Album. While Patrick was based in New York he travelled on location throughout the world.
In 1996 Patrick moved to London in order to work with the European market and explore a television career. Since arriving he became a regular guest makeup artist on BBC’s ‘Style Challenge’ programme and has also appeared on ‘The Clothes Show’, ‘Daily Live’ and ‘She’s Gotta Have It’, Granada’s ‘Wellbeing’ as a hair and skin expert, UK Style’s “Stylefile”, Living’s “Body Beautiful” as a Style Guru and GMTV “ LKToday” as a style expert.
Patrick has also appeared as a celebrity hairdresser in a Head & Shoulder’s television commercial which lead to a contract with American haircare company Alterna, for whom he was the international artistic and brand consultant responsible for their international launch. He has written a hair Q&A series for Elle.com and has presented an eight-part Spa Tour series for BBC Choice’s ‘Looking Extra Good’, and co-presented for Granada Breeze with ‘Fashion Livetime’.
Patrick presented a makeover strand on ITV1’s “Love2Shop”series, contributes regularly on BBC Radio Scotland’s Fred MacAulay, BBC Asian Radio, Talksport, Ideal Shopping Direct TV, has a Shopping Tips Experience with Red Letter Days, conducts a monthly workshop for Breast Cancer London and appears at numerous shopping centres throughout the UK comparing fashion events.
