OK NFCC#1, that's "No free equivalent. Non-free content is used only where no free equivalent is available, or could be created, that would serve the same encyclopedic purpose."

I am going to point out that the initial removal of the image from the

Sorry, but, on the face of it, a claim that a free equivalent is available or could be created is highly questionable. There was considerable debate, when Ms Ford first tried out for the Lingerie Football League as to whether she would in fact be prepared to don its skimpy uniform if she made the team. She did wear the uniform.

To anyone who is unfamiliar with the uniforms of the league the picture was, IMO, absolutely essential. I don't believe any text description of the uniform could be sufficient.

Further, Ms Ford would later make comments parallel to those of the cop who triggered the world-wide

Near as I can determine, there is no discussion on the wiki over whether or not this image was replaceable. I'd like to see it restored.

if you wish - however do note the following points

1. I will have to inform the original nominator - he can be quite tenacious, and is bound to have his say on the review.
2. Personally, I don't think there's much point in restoring, just for an infobox - if you need a non-free image of a living person, then I believe it should be within the article with a critical commentary about the image - but that's just my view.

The FUR is not "presented in clear, plain language and is relevant to each use" as the information isn't relevant to the use. In the purpose parameter to the FUR template, the FUR tells that the image is to be used in an article about the poster, but it is instead used in an article about the film. --

It's clear enough to me For visual identification of the object of the article. The article as a whole is dedicated specifically to a discussion of this work. The article is Ithihasa therefore "discussion of this work" refers to the article. Maybe your English is different to mine - English is a minefield for grammar - not to mention that US and UK grammar does vary - the poster is about an Indian file, they will use a UK English like me. He resumed his disruptive activity directly after the previous one week block ended. He is currently evading a three month block under a different IP address. Do people who are evading a block really need to be warned? As we speak, he is continuing to edit war across multiple articles, and this is only going to get worse. There really is no point to warning this user, as he been at this for over six years now, and he's not going to stop because someone politely requested it. Just prior to his previous block under this IP address, he has already twice vandalized my own user talk page to remove conversations that discussed his disruptive edits. It's only a matter of time before he goes back and does so again. In fact, I just got another six notification that I've been reverted as I previewed this message. Argh. It does sort of help in the short term, though. He's on an easily recognizable but unpredictable set of

class A IP ranges, and he's inactive until his IP address changes. This sometimes happens in just a day or two, but it can occasionally last over a week, as in this case. I initially proposed a range block, which was predictably declined as unfeasible. I've since been thinking about proposing an edit filter, but it's difficult to come up with one that would prevent his specialized disruption. I've been reporting him at AIV whenever he pops up; it's a bit frustrating and doesn't accomplish a whole lot, but it keeps the articles at least somewhat stable for a few days between incidents. Since his M.O. is to target any Hong Kong film or martial artist, it's difficult to predict where he will strike. I'm hoping to eventually come up with a better solution than periodic reports on AIV, but it's the best I've seen so far. I'm sorry for my rather irritable messages, but this guy is incredibly frustrating to deal with. He never stops, he never communicates, and he makes just enough non-disruptive edits that he occasionally gets a pass from other users (who don't know his history). NinjaRobotPirate (talk

@NinjaRobotPirate: A range block is really a last resort as you have found. He obviously knows how to get a new IP address - he coming up as "UK Sky Broadband" - Sky run over the BT lines here, so that's just a simple router cold boot to get a new address - also there are so many Sky users that a range block is unfeasible - it will hit too many editors.. I think we are better off with page protection - they do get the message eventually (but you also have to watch for new logged in users, rapidly gaining their 10 edits in 4 days to get autoconfirmed) Ronhjones  ^(Talk) 23:35, 25 December 2014 (UTC)

Page protection is certainly a solution, but there are hundreds of articles that he targets. The last time I counted, I had something like 300 martial arts films on my watchlist thanks to this guy. I'm not sure how to deal with that. Obviously, the Whac-A-Mole approach isn't a viable long-term solution, as he just keeps cycling through IP addresses; however, I can't see how we can protect hundreds of articles. Besides the edit filter, another proposal that was floated was to contact his ISP directly. I have not done this myself, as I lack any kind of VIP credentials. Maybe we could pester a WMF employee to draft an official-looking letter? I wouldn't know who to ask, though, as I've never really interacted with any of the WMF people. If you got to RFPP they will sit on it as they don't know the history. It takes 10 seconds to semi-protect the page with Twinkle. Lets just go with sending to me - I usually log on once a day in the cold UK days (once we get to March/April I may well vanish at the week ends - let's hope it don't go on that long!). I recently tagged "Hutchison Global Communications" for speedy deletion and it appeared as deleted in my Watch List. However, I have a better idea and I want to ask if this is fine: either re-create the page and redirect it to the article

Nothing annoys editors more than selecting a page which is a redirect, and when they get to the target there is nothing there which refers to the page they were looking for. You removed the Baltimore Ravens logo (and reverted to an old INCORRECT logo that I had corrected) on the grounds that it was "to [sic] big for non free". I can only assume you're talking about the image's dimensions, rather than the file size on disk since I'm well below Wikipedia's maximum file size. However, I'm not sure I understand this reasoning, because vector graphics don't have a "size" in the same sense that traditional raster graphics do. I agree with you (and Wikipedia) that raster image formats (JPG, PNG, TIFF, etc.) used under a fair use rationale need to be limited in size to prevent abuse and copyright infringement. However I can't find any guidance on Wikipedia on the size of vector images, other than they should not be rendered any larger than necessary (the important word there is RENDER). How large users choose to render vector graphics is beyond the control of myself or Wikipedia; it's like telling someone how many copies of an article they can print. We can't control that. It's the RENDERING of a vector graphic that's at issue, not the graphic itself, since an SVG is no more than geometric instructions on how to render a final raster image, NOT the raster image itself. Hence, when referencing an SVG, "too big" is not a valid descriptor.

Nevertheless, I went ahead and "re-sized" the image to be more in line with pixel dimensions that would be appropriate for raster images. I hope this is satisfactory. Happy Holidays!

Fine - looks OK - we know it's a vector image (although some are bitmaps wrapped up in a svg package) - it's just the default size we change (to be 100000 pixels or less) - there's a whole page I'm working through - Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing - I've finished all the "ogg" files, now I've started on the svg files. I have no idea why you are encouraging an editor to continue violating rather basic NFC principles and post phony accusations of vandalism rather than engage in reasoned discussion. There were no valid NFCC rationales for these images when I removed them; the just-rewritten rationales are still grossly insufficient, and every point that they are used to support is more than adequately conveyed by the existing text. These are obvious NFCC#8 failures. In no way is a nonfree image of an author needed to convey the meaning of a well-referenced statement that she wrote under a pseudonym. @Cyphoidbomb: https://www.ultratools.com/tools/ipv6Info - but whois for IPv6 can be very poor - it should always be static - but I have a large range (not sure if the are all mine!, maybe they are...) of 2001:8b0:9f0::/48 and I've currently got 2001:8b0:9f0:6034:915e:7222:e5f:b570 - which does give more info on ultratools than I expected (but then again, it cannot give the location within the UK - I get BRACKNELL, where the ISP office is located). I suspect the IPv6 has hopped IPs here to 2601:3:3380:9b5:d4a6:4879:2e66:8141. They're editing on a fairly obscure article that hasn't seen much constructive editing since October. It seems sort of funky that 97.100.70.85 immediately precedes me, and IPv6 immediately follows, when we know the Kissimmee, Florida vandal has been active today. It's like a Cyphoidbomb sandwich with really, really crappy bread. And frankly, I'd stay away from the middle part too. :) Anyhow, might be too soon to do anything. WP:Image resolution of 100,000 pixels - which for a square image comes out at 316x316 (and my odd example would be 158x632). For the File:Candy Crush Saga game setup example.jpg - 258 × 387 is 99846 pixels. Now there are two ways to achieve this - either do the calculations yourself - I tend to have an excel spreadsheet open myself - or upload your image at full size and immediately add {{non-free reduce}} to the image page, then within 24 hours Theo's little bot will reduce the image for you to the largest size possible under 100,000 pixels, and will replace the "reduce" temple with a "reduced" one, for flagging the old versions to be hidden. @Operahome: This is complicated. I've no knowledge of the banned user. The changes as I know them...

1. I found a page at Talk:Igor Janev (reported by AIV bot) and I deleted the page as G8 - 15:29, 31 December 2014
2. I then saw the history and saw that the previous version had been moved to the wrong place for a draft - to "Draft talk" and not "Draft" - That was a move from Talk:Igor Janev and moved to Draft talk:Igor Janev - 07:30, 29 December 2014 User:GorillaWarfare
3. So I just moved it from the Draft talk page to the Draft page - 15:34, 31 December 2014

If I roll back my move it will be in Draft talk - not good. Suggest either talk to the admins that know this banned user, or just tag for

I am a bit surprised about the reduction in size of File:Deckmyn as lambic.png; first by a bot (which only thinks in bytes probably); and today by you... Did I miss something and is there a minimum size limit for fair use images? I thought quality was leading, and as I stated in my previous upload , this is a very, very inferior image. Only by further sizing it down now the object that is discussed becomes harder (the fact that the receivers of the money are wearing scarfs). What would be a good way forward? Shall I upload a better image in full colour that allows for showing the details, but fulfils the size limit (which is?)? Or can you undo the deletion? Tnx for the help! WP:Image resolution - i.e. 100,000 pixels. so that image is currently 99702 pixels. If the other version is better - but just too big - I could restore it and let call the bot to reduce it to the correct size (takes about 24h for the bot to find it). Let me know if you want that. You could claim that it needs a bigger image than the guidleine - but you would have to state in the FUR, why a larger than normal image is required. You could also upload a much bigger image and immediately add {{non-free reduce}} to the page to call up the bot - reducing an image once is likely to give a better result. Ronhjones  ^(Talk)

@Connormah: There is not an explicit enough permission for Wikipedia. I take it you are referring to http://www.nmlegis.gov/lcs/credits.aspx - where it says The photographs of members on this site are owned by the State of New Mexico. They are provided courtesy of the New Mexico Legislature and may be used without obtaining permission - there's no license given for re-use, there's no mention of commercial use (so how can we decide on which license to use?) - if I saw an OTRS ticket with that statement, I (and all the others) would immediately bounce it back with an incorrect permission reply. The only true license statement we can see with the image is a clear "New Mexico Legislature, all rights reserved." at the bottom of the page, which I suspect is why User:Eeekster tagged the image again. Unless the web site sorts out it's permissions properly, then if the image is restored/uploaded, you are going to get this image tagged on a regular basis. or it will get moved to commons where I'll be deleting it there! My suggested options:

1. We can always restore it for a full FfD discussion
2. I could try e-mailing from OTRS to the e-mail address on http://www.nmlegis.gov/lcs/credits.aspx, to see if we can get a proper license statement.

1. You need to follow the procedure at
   WP:CONSENT
   can be used.
2. If the photo is of Michael Capponi and he sent you the photograph, then it's unlikely he will hold the copyright - that always (initially) belongs to the photographer. There therefore needs to be a written release of copyright (again to a suitable free license), and a scan of that will also need to be sent with the permission form.

Undid revision 640683026 by Technical 13 (talk) - it's causing Template:Admin dashboard to be unhelpful - why not drop them all into ONE category and list that *single* category ! This edit summary makes no sense. They were all being dropped into "

@Technical 13: I meant have a single category - like Category:Long talk pages which has a single entry in Category:Administrative backlog - the size of the admin dashboard was ridiculous - all those talk page suddenly appeared under the "Administrative backlog" heading - so instead of the usual 24 of so links in 2 columns we had a vast list - I had to scroll three pages to get to the AVI section. Fine - it's just that about 300+ editors have Template:Admin dashboard, and many won't want it bloated with dozens and dozens of single pages (a few new links will do nicely). • I think the problem is the fact that since no-one has been dealing with this issue, there has been a reasonably large backlog built up. I'm not sure I understand what you mean by a sub list of where their last edits was a year ago. There are no magic words or parser functions or way to obtain that information that I'm aware of. I can add template code to get the last editor or how long ago the last edit was, but I can't get user specific information. If the |date= parameter is used, I can get how many months ago the template was posted (this month, last month, longer ago). I can get the raw page size (not including images and templates being transcluded). I could modify the template to accept more parameters and get a few other pieces of info (like a more specific amount of time or who placed the template. I'm willing to do whatever I can to improve and expand. Do you think it would be worth trying to start a forum discussion on the idea lab or something? Adding things like Mass message sender opt-out category or removing users from mailing lists (I have seen that the suggestbot list is a common one that is filling these pages). Since one of the new features on the OneClickArchiver script will be the ability to place the Archiveme on pages that don't have any archiving set up and are large, I would be happy to have the script check the timestamp of the user's last edit and add it as a parameter to the template. This would probably only be shown if the script is used to place the template, but it is an option. Feedback is welcome, and no worries about me adding the code back to the template until we can figure out what the best plan is. I think your suggestion to flag the user's last edit date is good - it could flag up "lost" editors - I just picked one page at random User talk:MRacer - last edit 26 March 2014 and it's filling up with "WikiProject Yorkshire Newsletter" over and over again - and a second at random User talk:Zdunne - last edit 28 July 2013 - all "WikiProject Professional wrestling newsletter". Somehow there needs to be some control over these newsletters, if they were not published then a lot of user pages may well be smaller - it could help if these template were a simple one line template (maybe - or we may well hit the bl**dy template expansion limit...!). Maybe all newsletters need a yearly confirmation of inclusion - is it possible to have the distribution system of the newsletters not post a new one when the talk page is over a certain size? To be honest, I didn't even know there was an issue with talk pages filling up, it was only the wild effect on the dashboard that drew my attention - maybe we need an admin newsletter - ha,ha... Trouble is you can't be in all the places at once - I've just spent a fair bit of time clearing out Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing, now empty, had requests going back 2 years! • I've fixed the template. Apparently, a couple }} got lost and the category they were assigned too became Category:Archive requestss. I've fixed the template and am working through null editing all the pages it is transcluded on to update the link table. I've already set it up some groundwork by creating {{Mailing list member}} (which jackmcbarn converted to lua) which makes it possible to have a script (already planning on developing one) that can be run on mailing list pages to update each |inactive= parameter with each member's last activity so that mass messages will stop being sent to members based on whatever the project determines is a good cutoff for inactivity (default is 1 year to be marked as inactive and 2 years to stop messages). I actually didn't mark them all as Archiveme that I found, there where some I blanked and others I requested CSD (1.3MB of "SWAGSWAGSWAG........" wasn't very productive), there was even one I found that I had a CU nuke (funnily enough, it was quite offensive and named half a dozen admins including HJ Mitchell calling them all various derogatory names). There were a couple that appeared to be a database dump by a bot and one where a user replaced the entire page (including the block notice) with what seemed to be some long text in a language I assume was Italian based on the comments on the page and the reason they were blocked. Anyway, I really do have to question whether policing other editors' talk pages like that is the best use of everybody's time. • HJ Mitchell, the idea would be that the template would stay as it is with a minor adjustment that adds a wrapper div with an id. This means nothing will change for those that don't want it. What I will do is create the tool with an interface (on labs itself). Once that is done, I will create an API for that interface that will allow me to write an onwiki script. That onwiki script, will attempt to get the contents of the labs interface components through the API and will use some jQuery magic to replace the content of that div I just created with the content retrieved from labs. "If" the script fails to get the information from labs, it does nothing and the user still has the template version. This should only increase stability. You changed an edit I made and I do believe you have an error. You have reverted the page to include some very inaccurate statements which I have been trying to clear up. Not only doe this cause problems of accuracy of information, you have indicated that it was "not constructive". Correction of information is, in my opinion, and I would hope yours, always constructive, and reasoning was explained in edit. I would like to restore the Mwetoolkit page, which I created and which was deleted by you for the reason WP:NSOFT. I think that it is important that this tool is represented as a Wikipedia page because it is widely used in the research community of Natural Language Processing. References should not be removed - why should they, it's an encyclopaedia. If the references were fine when added then there's no need to remove them. Thanks for your recent attention to this nursing article. I wonder if I could draw on your Commons experience and ask you about the above image from the same article? It looks like a professional shot, and the licensing information claims previous publication in the latest edition of AMPA (a flight/aeromedical retrieval textbook). I own the 2006 edition in which the picture does not appear. In any case, AMPA is a copyrighted work.

I don't have access to Navy Knowledge Online, which AFAIK is accessible only with navy ID. I don't have much experience with image copyrights. Is this picture usable because it was (possibly) a work of the US federal government?

Hi, I understand that you recently deleted this image, which was a screen capture of a news broadcast from YouTube. @Whats new?:The person is alive - therefore replaceable. It's almost impossible to have a non-free image of a living person - if you find any let me know and I will delete them. Ron, Thx. for your feedback on the subject of deletion of historical articles on the above subject. I had one other Q...Given that my article on the above subject was accepted on Jan 2, can I not request a delete of ALL articles prior to the accepted article? In my view, the accepted article now provides some sort of authenticity and accuracy. It is the first accepted article on the subject. At this time it is the last article on the subject. No one else has contributed. All historical articles on the subject have been written by me and essentially represent my progress over time. After acceptance, all historical articles represent zero value to the public and are now garbage and should be deleted. I hate to waste disk space. Let me know what I could do. Thx.

@Kinderdeo: There is no true delete - everything, absolutely everything is saved forever - only the visibility varies. You could "delete" the whole article and start again from scratch, and the page log on the history page will still show 64 deleted edits (and they can always be read by admins and above - and even restored if they think fit). NEWBIE, though I've done a number of edits of existing pages under a different name. Basically, I don't have a clue what I'm doing, and at 65, my memory lacks a lot. I don't even remember how I added the picture you deleted, but I'll try again. I also don't know how I prove the rights to use it (it is all over the internet for this person, and the subject person provided the picture to me as "my favorite press release picture"), so I'm struggling to get this article the way I need it and I suspect moving at a much slower pace than others. Now, as an aside but as additional info to help me understand how I'm supposed to do things, I have a "real job" and, during the time of my anniversary, Christmas, my birthday, and New years (all across 12 days), my mother took ill and died. For two weeks I wasn't at work at all so nothing took place. How do I handle my "sandbox" such that things stay and stay the way I left them as I fight through this bio? I thought it was not even visible to anyone, and not therefore of concern to anyone. Now I find you had to delete the picture. Is there something I need to do differently? Are you able to coach me, or am I back to the articles which I've read several times and still do not feel I know what I need to?

@Digicentric: Never mind you being 65 - did you see my age at User:Ronhjones... - I hope I don't become suddenly clueless in 4 months :-). Images may be "all over the internet", but sadly we have to keep the right side of the Law. Someone owns the copyright of that image, now that will start with the person who "pressed the shutter" and made the work. It's possible that the copyrights were transferred to whoever commissioned the image, but we need to know that, and what rights were transferred - often when such an image is used in a promotional way, the agreed usage could be strictly "non-commercial" - we don't have non-commercial images - all Wikipedia image are released for any use including commercial. I see you did add a {{Non-free promotional}} template - sadly, that is not for living people. There are very few non-free images of living people, as such a subject is deemed replaceable (one gets takes a camera, and takes a picture - it may be difficult, but never impossible). Your sandbox should not change if left for a while - the presence of the linked image, caused the script to hide the image name when I deleted the image. Moving along, I suspect you image is a derivative of http://rockingrandmamusic.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/Larraine-Segil-press-photo-.jpg, so I would suspect http://rockingrandmamusic.com might know what could be done with that image. Hi Ron, I wasn't sure if I should have added it via Wikimedia Commons first, so I tried that last night and didn't know you could restore the previous image. So now we have duplicate images. How do I save the "approved" one and delete the dup? The artist emailed wikipedia with permission today, so I want to make sure the image that stays is linked with that permission and not the dup to delete. The duplicate image that I created last night is: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Charles_Fazzino_with_3-D_popart_plane_sculpture_at_JFK_airport.jpg but the OTRS is attributed to the image you restored.

After a brief respite, it looks like he's back again. I was hoping that he had simply given up. Rolled all edits back - and protected quite a few martial arts pages - see Special:Contributions/Ronhjones times - 19:40 to 19:46. Keep a close watch - I doubt if we have seen the last of him yet. I am wondering about the use of a photo that does not appear to have a copyright (unless that is impossible). I had posted an image of the late Urs Leupold that he used in an open letter to the S. pombe community on the occasion of the First International Fission Yeast Meeting in 1999. As best as anyone in the pombe community knows, there is no copyright associated with this image. You have removed this and I want to respect your likely superior knowledge of these matters, but I believe that this photo can be used on the page I have made for Dr. Leupold.

Thanks Ron. I believe that this would fall under the non-free image category and I would like to have it restored. I believe that including a photograph of Dr. Leupold, whom the vast majority of S. pombe scientists have never met personally, adds a lot to the page. By the way, my lab uses S. pombe to express mammalian adenylyl cyclases, GNAS1, and PDEs. We have published several PDE inhibitor screens and have published to only known selective PDE11 inhibitor. I understand that the image had to be removed again as long as the page is still a draft. What I did not understand is the difference between making a draft of a page that requires approval and simply making a page. I forgot what I did not cause the Leupold page to be a draft, because I recently thought I was doing the same thing for my former postdoc advisor Fred Winston (a member of the National Academy and the former president of the Genetics Society of America), but it ended up simply being a Wikipedia page. @Hoffmacs: We have several "spaces" in Wikipedia - Article space, User space, Draft space, File space, etc. The non-free image has to be in Article space - those pages show as having no prefix (unlike User:, Draft:, File:, etc). One can create a file directly in Article space (it's the original way it was done) - but it's very hard , if not always impossible - too many policies and guidelines make it difficult to get a page right first time. So it's far easier to make a Draft and get it reviewed and approved, then the likelihood of future deletion is far, far less. BTW there is nothing to stop you using File:Wikipedia non-free placeholder.png as an image placeholder to show where the non-free image will be later. Ronhjones  ^(Talk) 20:07, 16 January 2015 (UTC)

@Andy Dingley: You have the same issue that NinjaRobotPirate has with the "Martial Arts Vandal" (4 messages above) - a report at AIV will just give a short block on a new IP, you need a small team of admins "In the know", so that this sort of behaviour can be addressed. Currently with the MAV, I will add 1 week block (because we know he will be moved off that IP in a week), and semi protect any pages that he is concentrating on. The MAV is always on bb.sky.com, so a rangeblock is out of the question - just like your vandal is always on BT. BTW Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_UK_Railways#Long-running_IP_problem_edits is wrong - there's no way he's in Lincolnshire, just like there's no way I'm in Basingstoke (my IP address says I am - I'm in Carnforth, just a few miles away (200+!)). The UK phone system does not allow any geoloate other than "UK", all you get is an ISP office address for that particular IP band. That IP has probably re-booted his router by now, but if he does resume, drop me a line. If you can list some pages he's very active in, I'll be happy to semi protect them.
