I'm trying to teach a number of my old friends the basics of contributing to Wikipedia, especially to the Simple version. They are all old (in 70s) and vary from computer-phobe to enthusiasts. We are an on-line friendship group, and we have varied interests in Australian (mainly West Australian) birds, wildflowers and insects, so the idea is to help each other with various entries (probably mainly written jointly via email).
The instructions about sending jpeg files to Wikipedia Commons is pretty confusing, and I haven't yet tried sending in files. Can you point me to a good explanation on how to upload sound and picture files. I'll try it first then show them how.
One of my Queensland associates (not a member of this group) is an expert on sound recording of birds -- and another is a top bird watcher from Victoria who probably has plenty of pictures also.
Also, if we create a file for, say, the WA wildflower known colloquially as the "Multiflowered Fringed Lily", is it best to create a separate article (Category: Flora of Western Australia) or just add it to the general article on Australian Fringed Lillies ?
How do we find the species and genus names of flowers, birds, insects, etc.? Is there some way of finding experts on-line who would be able to provide these via email ?
If we don't know these, should we go ahead and create the article under the common name, and allow someone else to add the scientific material later? I notice that the Wikipedia Commons tends to store pictures under the taxonomical names.
How do we handle the fact that some birds and flowers and insects have different common names in the different states? Is there a system for reflecting one name to another?
Sfist (talk) 08:01, 26 January 2016 (UTC)
- Images and sound recordings are treated similarly by the Wikimedia Commons. For the purposes you describe above, we would need the media to be released by the copyright holder under a free license such as the WP:Donating copyrighted content for details on the additional steps that are necessary. However the copyright issues are dealt with, freely licensed media can be uploaded to the Commons via the Upload Wizard.
- If you know a plant's or bird's common name, but not the scientific name, I'd try a Google search first. If that does not turn up any results or, conversely, if the results are ambiguous, I'd next suggest asking at either the WT:WikiProject Australia.
- While categorizing media is very helpful and makes it much easier for others to find them, it's not strictly required. I would advise against creating new common-name categories but rather use the existing categorization scheme to the degree of accuracy you can, and then, with the image or sound file uploaded and visible to others, ask for help in refining the categorization.
- On Wikipedia, redirects can point readers looking for one name to an article under a different title. Conversely disambiguation pages help readers find the article they are interested in if the same name might refer to different topics - see for example Gooseberry (disambiguation).
- Wikipedia - unlike the Commons - is no image gallery, however; Wikipedia articles about those species would need more than just images or sound files, but also text based on reliable published sources. Such sources are practically guaranteed to exist for any species imaginable, but finding them and writing an article about the species may still involve some work. On the other hand, articles about some of the relevant species might already exist; then adding an image or a sound file would be easy (see ]
Thanks, that is all helpful. I managed to get my uploads working. For some reason Wiki Commons didn't want to accept the Category Flora of Western Australia, yet it offered this (and about 12 monthly variations) as an option. It also refused to allow me to add more than one Category, yet many articles have two or more. I simply ignored the warnings and it seems to have worked. Sfist (talk) 11:55, 26 January 2016 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on Clark Judge requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. {MordeKyle} ☢ 02:46, 25 January 2017 (UTC)
