We have guidelines for how to handle Macedonia/FYROM. Pushing your POV in this area is likely to get you quickly blocked. And at least one of your edits was nonsense: "The Slavic and Bulgarian name of the city is Kostur" in place of "The Macedonian and Bulgarian name", since the Bulgarians are Slavs. I'm sympathetic to the potential ambiguity of the name "Macedonian" in such situations, but that's why we've spent long hours devising the guidelines. kwami (talk) 19:40, 11 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Reply to Kwami: I am unfortunately not aware what the guidelines are and where to find them. I suppose you are a linguist and you are referring by "Macedonian" to the language of FYROM, which is not what in a Greek context such as this one refers to when one says Macedonian. There are more Greek Macedonians than Slavic ones overall and in any case we are referring to a Greek city located in the administrative district of Macedonia, hence a Macedonian city with the name Kastoria in the local (hence Macedonian) language. If there are rules regarding the definitions of languages or dialects, and the appropriate contexts, they should be immediately available to readers for clarification whenever a contentious situation arises. I find it difficult however to understand that one might say the Yorkshire name of York is "add its Slavic equivalent". Secondly, if there are rules about providing multilingual information on place names, there should also be some guidance about which languages would be relevant. Especially in Greece the legitimacy of using the name Macedonian to denote non-Greek (a Slavic language) is disputed, that is appreciated generally as well as within the context of Wikipedia. Greek Slavic vs local Greek? "Macedonian language" can only mean Slavic in English (or Ancient Macedonian), never Greek proper. It's the Greek language, or the Macedonian (sub)dialect of Greek. Anyway, the links to the ongoing policy debate are on my talk page. (What it currently looks like is that Greek editors want one thing, based on "FYROM", and everybody else, including those with no connection to either side, want something else.
