2012 Delhi gang rape case

Now that verdicts are in for all defendants on the 2012 Delhi gang rape case, I think we should take another run at GA. This seems likely to appear on ITN first, but once the traffic from that slows, would you like to do the honors of renominating? Thanks again for your work on this one. I'm happy we had a high-quality article ready for all the traffic this one's now getting. -- Khazar2 (talk) 11:47, 13 September 2013 (UTC)

  • Hey TOS, what it does is it finds the Would you like to be a helper? Please visit the Guide to helping... and turns it into a row of links almost like: Once you click on one of the links (which I'm thinking might look better as buttons in the future once functional), it gathers the information needed to respond to the question (whatever that may be), and replaces the {{Help me}} with the appropriate replacement and response. There is also some onwiki testing I am doing at User:Technical 13/SandBox/help-helper-tools.js and testcases on User talk:Technical 13/SandBox/help-helper-tools. Once I get the section figured out how to properly read the page contents (or eventually the section contents) so that I can manipulate it and repost it, then the rest should be a relative cakewalk. :) I'll let you know when it is ready for alpha testing, so you can be one of the first to try it and help me debug things and improve the interfaces. :) Technical 13 (talk) 11:50, 19 September 2013 (UTC)

Rangeblock RFC

As the proponent of the Range Block RFC, I thought you might be the person to ask to see if anything had come of it? There is a current AN discussion related to the idea, and I was considering trying to set up a page to deal with it, but if something has already been started, or completed, I wouldn't want to duplicate the effort. Thanks for any info you can provide. Link to related AN Discussion Monty845 14:44, 20 September 2013 (UTC)

Hello, Monty,

Get a new mouse

Imagine my confusion and slight anger after being notified of this! Fortunately, I checked the latest revision of the idea lab and found that you had reverted your own revert. Addressing the root issue here, your wild and uncontrolled clicking is starting to put a serious strain in our relationship; I advise that you purchase a new pointing device that doesn't act of its own volition. I had a similar problem about a week ago where my trackpad would randomly jerk and click things without me even touching it (but then mysteriously stopped after a few days). Maybe one of those new ergonomic mice would do you good, or at least help your computer control its strange impulses. - HectorAE (talk) 22:26, 30 September 2013 (UTC)

On a google search, it depends on how frequently Google updates these Wikipedia entries, and we have no control over it. I'd say to give it a day or two, and see if it still persists.

Edits

I cannibalized your proposal a bit. Having a proposal advertised via a watchlist notice can mean having to add a bit of "marketing" to make the uninitiated general public aware of the situation, and using concise bitesize easily-digestible sections. Even though I think it needed that touch, overall I think it's a good proposal. Hopefully this will help get it through. Let me know if there's anything about my edits you didn't like, or just go ahead and tweak away. equazcion 14:16, 8 Nov 2013 (UTC)

  • 👍 Like Thank you for that. Even though I didn't intend for the proposal to be completely AFC oriented, I didn't realise that AFC would form one major part of it that would allow other editors to understand why this namespace wasrequired in the first place. I too feel that your changes would make it get through. Thanks again.

From the point of view of AfC I sincerely hope that the 'draft' namespace gets adopted. i'm sorry if I had to be the first to point out the other aspects of the RfC, but I knew that userspace drafts would become a major issue for opposing. I actually had a draft RfC for this waiting on my computer but you pipped me to it by a couple of days. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 05:37, 9 November 2013 (UTC)
  • Kudpung Let's just focus on the proposal now and let things try and sort themselves out. I had, unfortunately, completely missed that particular userspace perspective, and believed that the more simplified things were, the better it would be. The proposal would probably have gone along better if I'd not waaited for more people to comment before I removed that userspace part.
In any case, it's time to look forward and see where things lead us. The worst case scenario I see is that the proposal has to go through the same RFC again from scratch. Let's just wait and see which way it would turn.
P.S. Do you notice that you often use double soacing while typing?
talk
) 12:35, 9 November 2013 (UTC)
Before you feel pressured into restarting the RfC, you might wish to run the whole thing through a text editor. You may be surprised. Double spacing? There was in fact a discussion about it on my tp. It generally only happens in talk spaces where it doesn't matter, but it's not likely to be rectified in a hurry; fortunately html ignores them. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 13:05, 9 November 2013 (UTC)

The double spacing has already been discussed. I've been aware of the problem for nearly 55 years. There is absolutely no need to rectify it - html takes care of it. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 13:48, 9 November 2013 (UTC)
55 years? I doubt there were similar keyboards that long ago.
Also, I understand it's no problem, but being a perfectionist, I cannot help but wondering whether a simple script could correct your WikiText before you save it. That could solve the bad-looking kerning in the source editor.

The Draft space RFC

I just wanted to send you a personal "thank you" for essentially creating the proposal for a "Draft" namespace that I was not able to write myself. I saw the notification of the RFC show up, and I seriously thought I was imagining things. Well, that, and I thought that I had been "sleep-Wikipediaing" and wrote and posted the proposal. My desire to have this namespace created goes back to when I thought of the idea back in April of this year. I know that the proposal has been in place for a few weeks now, but ... I'll try to help others understand the necessity of this namespace the best I can for the duration of this RFC, as best as my time will allow.

But seriously, I thought I was dreaming when I saw the notification for the proposal, or that my eyes were playing tricks on me. Steel1943 (talk) 01:37, 15 November 2013 (UTC)

  • Steel1943 It turns out there Kudpung too was ready with a proposal of his own. So we're all on the same side working here :)
I appreciate your help, and hope that we'd be able to work together on more issues in the days to come. As far as I am concerned, this is just one minor but substantial step towards a number of changes that should make Wikipedia better for our newcomers as well as everyone else.
Let's hope and work towards getting this first step done.

Re: Help me

Thank you, but I think I know how the template is used after being here for a few days years. Did you fail to see that there were at least two unanswered questions in that section on my talk page? I have no idea what "the template is used when you require other editors in general to assist you with editing help, not specific editors" or how it could possibly apply. The two unanswered questions remain:

  1. How difficult would it be to merge two video clips (clearly linked) into one for use on Wikipedia? A user has expressed interest in merging the linked files together, or at least understanding the feasibility of such a merge (taking into account the file size, quality).
  2. Is there a way to display a single media file (like a video) in an article, but allow the user to choose from several media files (like a playlist)? Due to concerns about multiple media files cluttering up an article section, it would make sense to allow a reader to choose from a set of files but only to display one file at a time, thereby reducing the clutter.

I hope this helps clarify the questions. Viriditas (talk) 11:15, 11 November 2013 (UTC)

  • Hi,
I did notice that you were an experienced editor. While I did notice those two questions, I was under the assumption that the help-me was for the initial post by Petrarchan47, which I now realise was incorrect. That was why I was trying to say that if they wanted to ask you specifically, maybe the help-me was placed in mistake.
If you use a help me request, you ping across a general group of editors, who generally may not be technically oriented enough to answer your specific query. Maybe is it possible to ask at the Technical Village Pump? Or shall I re-add that helpme I removed, and wait to see if someone else answers it?
talk
) 12:23, 11 November 2013 (UTC)
Nope. I was hoping by chance that you might know the answers. However, I agree with you, it does seem like something that might end up on the village pump. I just thought I could get some advice for Petrarchan47 before it went that far. Thanks. Viriditas (talk) 12:27, 11 November 2013 (UTC)
As far as I know, both of these are way beyond what we already have at the moment, and would likely have to be made by someone who knows how to. VPT seems like the best location to find the maximum number of such editors around.
talk
) 12:37, 11 November 2013 (UTC)
  • I'm still lurking around, and yes two clips can be merged if they are the same file type/format (and if they aren't the same they can be converted). The can also be cropped and adjusted or converted to address any size concerns. I do not believe that so-called "playlists" are an option at the moment, you might want to see if there is an extension for that on MediaWiki wiki and if so you can request it added to the configuration (which would require a consensus in some forum) and if not you could request it on bugzilla: as an enhancement. Happy editing! Technical 13 (talk) 01:39, 12 November 2013 (UTC)
Pinging
talk
) 03:00, 12 November 2013 (UTC)
Thanks. Yes, I know the clips can be merged. My question concerns the feasibility of doing so. The user in question would like to merge the following three files into one large file and upload it to commons:
File:Edward Snowden speaks about NSA programmes at Sam Adams award presentation in Moscow.webm (14.76 MB)
File:Edward Snowden speaks about dangers to democracy at Sam Adams award presentation in Moscow.webm (8.09 MB)
File:Edward Snowden speaks about government transparency at Sam Adams award presentation in Moscow.webm (10.65 MB)
Which software would you recommend that the user employ and would the resulting file size be a problem for Commons or for the reader trying to view it? In other words, would you recommend against merging these files? Viriditas (talk) 03:11, 12 November 2013 (UTC)

If this question is still open, you could always try the computer-section over at

WP:RD, or alternatively, here's what I found out from doing some poking around. I've not tried these techniques, so please take this with a grain of salt. The main nerd-friendly options are GUI+CLI mkvmerge[1][2][3] and the more traditional CLI_only ffmpeg[4][5][6]
. If those don't look like the answers you were hoping for....

  1. Humans willing to directly help... woo! Click here --
Wikipedia:Creation_and_usage_of_media_files#Useful_software Talkpage-based help from humans.[7] Mailing list for emailing humans.[8][9]
    []
  2. Upload your video in the maximum quality possible[10] but by default the video-format limitations are max size 100mb (20mb on wikiversity), max bitrate 220kBit/sec.
  3. Generic advice about tools you may already have, like
PiTiVi/MovieMaker/iMovie;[11] see also the $$$$ tools like Premiere and Final Cut.[12][13][14] There is also a built-in-video-editor of some sort in 3D Blender_(software)
    .
  4. Recommended[15] uploader-tool, Firefogg.[16][17]
  5. Recommended[18] editing-n-converting-GUI-tool, MiroVideoConverter.[19] From the folks behind
    ffmpeg
    , see below.
  6. Recommended[20] editing-n-converting-CLI-tool, ffmpeg2theora[21] or raw ffmpeg[22][23][24] (cmdln... some GUI options also... best answers by slhck... ubuntu and debian sometime replace ffmpeg with the libav fork). [25][26]
  7. Another recommended[27] command-line tool: mkvmerge[28] (GUI or cmdln).[29][30]
  8. Other: all-plat Avidemux / HandBrake .... UNIX-like-only Cinelerra / OpenShot / Kdenlive / LiVES / Kino / FreeJ .... see also.[31]

The three links you mentioned are in WEBM containers, and if merged/spliced together without cutting any footage, or lowering resolution/fps/whatever, total size would be 33 MiB -- should be no problem. 74.192.84.101 (talk) 02:55, 19 November 2013 (UTC)

As far as I can tell, the proposal and consensus part is done, and it is up to the technical and the implementation bits. Which is why it's a lot more feasible to have the discussions hosted on Bugzilla, being a platform specifically designed for those tasks. So while these discussions aren't really behind the scenes (The bugzilla links are available right there, and it's relatively simple to follow a discussion there),it doesn't make sense to be having them onWiki.

@BOZ: All the work (bug comments, wiki documentation, and even code commits) will be publicly visible. Some of it might be unfamiliar if you're not a developer, but everyone will be able to follow progress and I'll make sure we keep the community abreast of when a release will happen, and so on. Hi! Sorry for the delay. talk
) 17:40, 30 November 2013 (UTC)
The new
incidents noticeboard is where specific problems get posted, so if you want to help fight fires that's the best place to look. If you want to get involved with a specific course, talking with the instructor is the way to begin, and/or just start checking out what the students are doing and offer whatever feedback you think will be helpful to them. The normal workflow is that you would identify courses you want to work with before assignments begin, and get in contact with the instructor to let them know you want to help and talk with them about what they've got planned, and then you just keep an eye on the course until its over and help in whatever ways you wish. The specifics will vary a lot depending on how hands-on with the students' articles you want to be, what their assignments are like, and whatever communication patterns you and the instructor have. Some ambassadors check out pretty much everything the students are doing, to offer gentle corrections throughout the term and prevent small problems from growing. Others are more reactive than proactive, giving help to students who request it but otherwise mostly just watching out for major problems.--ragesoss (talk

Hi. You are one of the editors involved in the Premier league table template at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)/Archive 121#Displaying a part of the table. The work is very close to the end and the template now loks like the one currently used at 2013–14 Premier League. I just wanted to see if you could take a look at what I did last night at Template:2013–14 Premier League table/sandbox so that the code looks okay. What I did was that previously there was "Qualified for champions league" on three rows (1,2 and 3) and the same for relegation, so now i wanted it to span over all these rows (as in 2013–14 Premier League) using the rows-parameter in the template used inside our template.

My idea was that when teams 1,2,3 are shown (for the first 3 teams in table) there should be a span over three rows and when the table should show teams 2-6 (for team on pos4) i wanted it to be a span over 2 rows. Hard to explain in writing. I used switches and ifeq for that. The result can be seen at User:Spudgfsh/sandbox. Please take a look at it and comment on the result. Then it is only to decide if we should highlight the team or not and then we should use it. Discussion about that on Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)#Highlighting or bolding.

I would also like to thank you for all the work you have done with this table. Thank you!. QED237 (talk) 11:27, 19 December 2013 (UTC)
