If you have time before Friday evening, your help with this politics task force collaboration would be much appreciated! If you have questions, please ask them there. Schwede66 07:33, 30 November 2011 (UTC) Hi, I've been trying to do a little bit, but wasn't sure if I should indicate any change on the politics task force collaboration table in case I stuffed up the table somehow. Hopefully someone is checking each page to see how we're going and will do the adjustments for me. Many thanks. --Te Karere (talk) 10:38, 3 December 2011 (UTC)
Hi Te Karere - re this - why did you add a "citation required", when there is a citation for this, at the end of the following sentence? Citations aren't generally repeated in paragraphs - if several facts of a paragraph are given in the same citation, iot goes at the end of the paragraph. Grutness...wha? 06:36, 26 December 2011 (UTC)
- Hi Grutness - I'm sorry about my lack of understanding about the Wikipedia citation policy; I didn't know a citation at the end of a paragraph could apply equally across the paragraph. I have found some alternative sources on Google scholar that discuss manaia and the finger issue in particular, but need to login through my work after the holiday period, as they have to be accessed via a database. FYI, the maori.info source is very, very similar to Te Ara, with the latter having a discussion on the meaning of three-fingered figures in Polynesian carving under the first section "The Human Figure". This section discounts the idea that the number of fingers has meaning. It maybe I'll find better sources later.
- On a related issue, why do you use "distorted" versus "altered"? "Distortion" has a specific meaning in Wikipedia. I am unsure the changes enacted in manaia could be termed "unwanted", and no attempts are made to "minimize it in practice". " Alteration" denotes a change without identifying the motivation, thus presenting a more neutral noun. If you don't mind, I would like to return the noun "distortion to "alteration".--Te Karere (talk) 22:38, 26 December 2011 (UTC)]
- I use distorted because that is exactly what is done to the shape of the Manaia. "Altered" implies that some of the features of the manaia are removed and others are added - distorted more clearly gets across the point that the figure is still complete, but is changed in shape to fill the necessary gap. These are fairly standard meanings of altered and distorted in the world of art and design. As to the meanings or otherwise of the fingers, if you can find some source which says they don't have any specific meaning,t hat's fine (though it's probably worth a footnote to say that some sources suggest that they have specific meanings). English speaking?
One editor suggested that I don't know much English. Perhaps you do and can write something that is more clear? Let me know if you are willing to help write something clearer. Note: I do not speak Tetum, the language of Timor Leste. Vowvo (talk) 22:04, 9 December 2020 (UTC)
- On the other hand, I think my English is fine. No help needed. Vowvo (talk) 22:07, 9 December 2020 (UTC)
I accidentally reverted your edits to the description; I seemed to have missed the discussion you had there. Would you mind some more discussion? TE(æ)A,ea. (talk) 01:49, 7 September 2021 (UTC)
- Reverted your revert as discussion complete (this is one of my publication areas - if you want to learn more, Claudia Orange is ok). Te Karere (talk) 02:19, 7 September 2021 (UTC)

]Some concerns
Kia ora, I'm not a Maori (let alone live in Aotearoa), so I hope it's appropriate to ask these to someone from the culture.
I've been noticing the lack of mentions of the phrase 'tangata moana' around enwiki, and I was intending to add the term to Pacific_Islander#New_Zealand. But I'm wondering, is it contextually suitable to add the term there (since it's probably far less common than 'Pasifika')?
Also, is it ok if there's a separate subhead for the in the 'tangata moana' term within the tangata whenua article (the way tangata tiriti has its own subhead)? And what are the proper contexts that can be included (other than the phrase being a substitute for 'Pasifika')? So far I only have this and this to cite. I hope you can let me know if it's inappropriate to do so.
Nga mihi. 🙏 D (talk?) 04:53, 2 December 2024 (UTC)
