Stanford Jim

Could you have a look at

Stanford Jim and see how we are doing making it non-copyvio? I haven't dealt with copyright issues on Wikipedia in a while and I'd like your opinion on how close we are to being compliant so far.Dolive21 (talk

Unfortunately it is still a copyvio. In order for the text to not be a copyvio, it must not resemble the original text. The sentences are still copies of the original text. I am going to reinstate the copyvio tag. ttonyb (talk) 22:23, 1 August 2010 (UTC)

2011 is the 1st year of the second decade of the third millennium. How is that an incorrect assumption?

I'm at a loss as to why you changed my edit on listing the year 2011 CE as the 1st year of the second decade of the third millennium. Do the math. There was no "Year 0 CE". Years CE are counted from Year 1. "0" is a point, not a year. Might you think the second millennium ended in 1999 CE? It did not--it ended in 2000 CE. Allllllll of the decades/centuries/millenia end in a "0", not a "9". Alllllllll first years of the decades/centuries/millennia end with a "1". It's simple math. I'll break it down: First Decade (10 years total): begins with year 1, then year 2, etc. As we approach the end of the decade, we get year 8, year 9, uh, wait, that makes only 9 years, not ten. Guess we have to include year 10 to that first decade in order for the First Decade to actually include 10 years instead of nine. Subsequently, the Second Decade must begin with year 11. The same arithmetic naming applies to counting to years 100, 1000, 2000, and 2011.

This change made to my wording is EXACTLY why Wikipedia is not trusted by academics. Nor should it be, with willy-nilly assumption-correctors running amok. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Highsmim (talkcontribs) 19:06, 2 August 2010 (UTC)

Declined speedy Annette Groves

I declined the speedy to Annette Groves, as being a Canadian municipal politician and regional councilor of Bolton in Caledon, Ontario seemed to show importance. MC10 (TCGBL) 02:05, 4 August 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for the message. Although I don't agree – I looked and found nothing of substance in Google – let's see what happens. If the PROD is removed, I'll probably move it to an AfD. My best to you. ttonyb (talk) 02:09, 4 August 2010 (UTC)
Hello everyone. I would appreciate any help you could provide me with ensuring this page is not deleted. I am not completely familiar with wikipedia markup but I have tried to do my best. Feel free to take a look at the page as it is now. I have referenced Annette Groves to her Town of Caledon page.(Psd007 (talk) 02:32, 4 August 2010 (UTC))
The article does not appear to meet the criteria in

I have skimmed through the notability section. There is currently an election happening and one of the candidates (Marolyn Morrison) has decided to create a wikipedia page for herself. Marolyn is an important political figure in the GTA of South Ontario. The Annette Groves election team is attempting to create her wiki page in order to show the very important work the Annette has done over the last decade. We would appreciate if you could give us some time to finish making her page (a few days). If at that point the wikipedia community decides that the page does not meet notability criteria, you may feel free to delete it.References from city hall has been added to the page. More are on the way, we just need a few days ti finish making the page.(Psd007 (talk) 02:54, 4 August 2010 (UTC))
I have gone ahead and moved this to an AfD discussion to get some more eyes on the article. ttonyb (talk) 05:18, 4 August 2010 (UTC)

Hello,I think I have corrected the issues on the Donyil Livingston page. Can you explain what else needs changed? Thanks for your help in this matter. TheFightGuy2010 (talk) 03:03, 4 August 2010 (UTC)

Hello, Thanks for helping out with the Donyil Livingston page. I noticed you removed the citation I had put on there because it was a duplicate in the links. My question is if I would have deleted the one in the Links section and left it in the citation would that have been an acceptable citation? Or do I need to put it somewhere in the body of the page or an inline? Thank you. TheFightGuy2010 (talk) 17:27, 4 August 2010 (UTC)
You are welcome. The reason I removed it was the citation did not specifically support something in the article and was not inline. References are generally used to support something said in the article and are attached to that statement. ttonyb (talk) 18:17, 4 August 2010 (UTC)

Hi, Ttonyb1. Could you please explain to me why you reverted my addition of Rawya Ateya to the

region of 350 million people makes her pretty significant in my opinion. In fact, the article about her was even included on Wikipedia's main page last March on the occasion of International Women's Day. What makes her less internationally significant than an unnoteworthy American diplomat, an American football player or an American television announcer? The majority of the world's population doesn't follow American football or watch American TV, so if international significance is the criteria for inclusion in the deaths section, then these individuals should be removed too. Hi, I'd just like to enquire as to why the Oretronics page has been tagged for deletion, since there isn't any inflammatory information on it? It is necessary that people within this line of interest know WHO is out there. Oretronics isn't just a 'for profit' company, as we also support many charity organisations in it's hometown. Schools benefit from our programmes of recycling IT, thus receiving a discount on their new purchases, etc. Please just let me know what I need to change to not have this page removed, as it would seem highly unfair. Regards. Orescanin (talk) 05:52, 6 August 2010 (UTC)

The first place to start is the CSD tags that were left on your article and your talk page. Did you read them? They have the reasons for the deletion in them. Please let me know if you have any questions as a result of your reading them. You mention that the article is necessary for people to know who they are. Rejected CSD of Double discography

Although this was originally accepted, I've restored and rejected this CSD as an improper use of A9. A little research showed that the article was a reference to Double (singer), and with the sales figures given it would have perhaps been good to look more closely at this before a hasty nomination. Richard Scotti

You marked the page Richard scotti for speedy deletion stating it did not meet the notability criteria. According to the notability guidelines for academics this individual qualifies as a notable person in academics.

Tony, I recently came across a posting (I can't remember where) that claimed that if there is an external link of any kind on the page anywhere, it should be considered as a reference and thus a sticky prod cannot be used at all. circa italics

Hiya,

I am unclear on the need to italicise the c. for Circa in articles.

WP:YEAR
is somewhat confusing, because in the text it is italicised, but in the example it is not.

I checked a couple of FA's...in Alcibiades it is italicised, in Giovanni Villani it is not.

Can you perhaps advise, and possibly clarify that MOS page?

Hope you are the right person to ask. Cheers,  Chzz  ►  14:36, 23 August 2010 (UTC)

Sounds good. As I understand it, the italic is optional; as the Circa article says, "sometimes" in italics. Happy to go without, and I think I might edit that MOS page so it isn't so confusing. Thanks.  Chzz  ►  16:06, 23 August 2010 (UTC)

David Max Freedman - speedy deletion

Thanks for taking the time to look over the David Max Freedman entry. For full disclosure, I know David Freedman personally, and have spoken to him recently.

This David Max Freedman entry is a new entry marked for speedy deletion for a few reasons. He is a writer and creator of several animated TV shows, but did not have his own entry in Wikipedia. To make matters more confusing, some of the references from his works were linked to a different David Freedman and we wanted to correct this. It may take some time to find references for all of his credits, but we are starting with the ones that already exist in wikipedia and fixing their links to point to this page.

A longtime user of wikipedia, I am new to making contributions, so I hope you can bear with me as I help my friend clean up his entry. It is true that I know David Freedman, and therefore his entry is essentially autobiographical, but the intention is to clean up previously incorrect entries (shows linked to the wrong David Freedman) and to start a basic entry for David Max Freedman that can be enhanced by others with valid references.

Sorry about this.
Actually, just read the excellent http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:BIO advice. I can see how I can improve this article now such that there is objective evidence that my peers have found my work significantly noteworthy. I am trying desperately to understand it from your point of view.—Preceding unsigned comment added by Articleman11 (talkcontribs) 19:46, 27 August 2010 (UTC)
I read this earlier:
COI article for a non-notable individual lacking GHIts of substance and with a single BBC GNEWS (missing from the article) that outlines alleged stalking of an actress [1]. The article reads like a CV and appears to fail notability. ttonyb (talk) 17:08, 27 August 2010 (UTC) Delete, no evidence of notability per WP:ACADEMIC or oth
I have put in a notification box. And now I am also explaining how my work has come to be cited; the derogatory reference is stalking is not why I am famous, and I find this remark - notwithstanding I am sure the author is perfectly nice - extremely offensive. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Articleman11 (talkcontribs) 19:46, 27 August 2010 (UTC)

I feel as if I've done my best to tackle your substantive points. Please let me know if you'd like me to do any more. Others can of course contribute unless it contravenes Wikipedia's code of conduct.

Articleman11 (talk) 21:47, 27 August 2010 (UTC)Articleman11

Let's get back to basics:
  • Writing articles about one's self is discouraged. The reason is evident in that the article is not written from a independent point of view. Comments such as, "As part of his career, a commitment to the adequate explanation of complex scientific and medical concepts has been pervasive," are a good indication of the lack in independence. I again suggest you read
    WP:CONFLICT
    for more information.
  • For an article to survive in Wikipedia it must meet certain criteria. Specifically, for biographies it must meet the criteria in
reliable sources to support the statements made. Using an article as a reference does not support the notability of the individual, it only confirms the individual wrote an article. The article still resembles a resume. As stated above Wikipedia is not to be used to promote one's self. I would suggest using personal website for that. ttonyb (talk

These are good comments. However there is a 'yeah but'. As evidence that my work had been quoted from "reliable sources", I indeed cited three huge textbooks in dementia which had discussed my work, including the latest textbook of medicine. For you then to obliterate them from my article is wrong, I feel. And then your other reviewers complain it reads like a CV whilst at the same time I have to demonstrate my considerable notability in the world of dementia. For example I went at the invitation of the President of World Federation of Neurology division tp their conference in Turkey this year to discuss dementia. His name is Prof Facundo Manes, and feel free to contact him if you have concerns about my 'notability'. You will find that my research continues to make a massive impact.
Otherwise, I've done what you say which were excellent comments. I am new to this, so please forgive me. Articleman11 (talk) 21:47, 27 August 2010 (UTC)Articleman11

CSD declined for Ernie Joseph

Hello Ttonyb1, I've had to decline your A7 speedy tag on Ernie Joseph because importance is asserted (in that he is "well known"). Feel free to AfD, PROD, etc. Regards, Airplaneman 03:58, 27 August 2010 (UTC)

Their Love of Music deletion

I'm new here and just put up the titled page for a project I'm working on...every word of the text used was written by me for the project. When I returned to it to start adding things today, it had been deleted...help? thanks, —Preceding unsigned comment added by Davethomas82 (talkcontribs) 16:24, 27 August 2010 (UTC)

The deletion message in your talk page details how to get a copy of the text you wrote. ttonyb (talk) 16:50, 27 August 2010 (UTC)
Sorry, Ttony, but I don't understand your response. I would like to get the page reinstated please. How do i go about that? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Davethomas82 (talkcontribs) 16:53, 27 August 2010 (UTC)
The article was deleted because it was a copy of existing text and therefore a violation of Wikipedia guidelines and US copyright laws. If you are the author you need to
donate the material for use in Wikipedia or rewrite the text so it no longer resembles the original text. ttonyb (talk

Just got a helpful response from the Airplaneman, so I think I now understand...Thanks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Davethomas82 (talkcontribs) 16:57, 27 August 2010 (UTC)

Indonesian soccer stubs

Hi, I note your enthusiasm - I tend to err on the side of caution - due to possible dropout of connections in indonesia - and other such things as either lack of adequate english - filling a talk page with speedy messages if they have not got the hang of hangon seems counter productive - this particular user has signs of getting things right - when I lived in Indonesia many years ago I can assure you the connections would have made it impossible to create anything due to lags and dropouts - that my two cents anyways -cheers

I appreciate your 2 cents. Thanks... ttonyb (talk) 03:46, 28 August 2010 (UTC)
Thats kind of you - we have an eternal BLP issue with another who shows no sign of responding - he's a different kettle of fish - but hey - I'd rather be outside than in this hell hole cold computer room - Im out to get my vitamin d right now - cheers

Nice...I've spent more than my far share in those cold rooms. I found the disposable ear plugs were more useful than VitD. My best to you... ttonyb (talk) 04:42, 28 August 2010 (UTC)
Actually ( a very typical opening word for limited english indonesians ) I might set you on some of the soccer misbehaviouring ones at a later date - I got my dose of sun today - but the soccer onslaught continues unabated :|

Great work

The Working Man's Barnstar
For excellent contributions all around and exceptionally tireless work maintaining the years articles. Dawnseeker2000 18:26, 28 August 2010 (UTC)
Dawnseeker, thank you very much for the Barnstar. It is nice to see that my "hobby" is appreciated. I should note that you are just as, if not more, diligent in patrolling the years pages than I am. It always gives me smile to see when you have corrected a years page before I can get to it. 8-) Thanks, again and my best to you. ttonyb (talk) 00:55, 29 August 2010 (UTC)

Sorry Tony. I was simply adding them in the wrong place. Very sincere apologies. Articleman11 (talk) 01:20, 29 August 2010 (UTC)Articleman11

Have made it clear this is just an ordinary biography, not a biography of an academic

Articleman11 (talk) 18:34, 28 August 2010 (UTC)Articleman11

Once more I shall ask you to please stop adding comments here that are posted elsewhere. I can, and do, read them in the original form and location. If you have an issue with someone else's response or comments, you need to contact them about the comment, not me, them.
I have answered your questions, as have others, as to why the article does not meet the criteria for Wikipedia inclusion; however, once more, the article does not meet either the
WP:UNCIVIL and base your next comments on that article. If you continue to refer to my behavior as "rude impolite offensive" you shall be taqged as uncivil. ttonyb (talk
) 01:05, 29 August 2010 (UTC)

Really really really sorry. I am really genuinely sorry about this, even if you scrap the article. I just felt that no-one was reading the references carefully. For example, over half of them are from groups other than Cambridge and London. But I won't drone on as usual, and I hope to be civil and co-operative (and I mean it completely) I personally don't feel that there is a lack of reliable sources; I've quoted news stories, book chapters, secondary sources in the form of book reviews. All the papers quoted have discussed my work (to prove it my papers are in their list of references). I don't even know them. Articleman11 (talk) 01:23, 29 August 2010 (UTC)Articleman11

Please note that elsewhere on this site I have completely agreed with you now that I don't feel this merits at all a biography, and I wrote the original article. Some of the stuff on neuroscience might be useful elsewhere in your brilliant encyclopaedia though Articleman11 (talk) 08:08, 30 August 2010 (UTC)Articleman11

...

I read that you put up my page, Toby Turner, because it didn't have a reliable source, but it fact, on the last section, entitled "Toby's Self-Written Short Biography" has a link to a website created by Toby Turner. His biography was written by him, and most of my information was taken from this page. The only other information I gathered was straight from his Youtube videos.

On another note, he actually approved of me making him a Youtube page through a message.

Please, if you would wish to elaborate on how I can fix said problem, tell me.

Edit: I have found out the error on my own and fixed it, hopefully. I added in a reference the page I was speaking of previously.

I cannot tell is How Bad U Want It is Notable but the article as written does seem to be entirely promotional, and I have given this as a speedy reason. But it certainly was not empty and di have meaningful content. DGG ( talk ) 09:02, 31 August 2010 (UTC)
