Vehicle registration plates of Laos started in 1950. The current version started in 2001. Colour in the background varies for each type of vehicle. Ordinary ones are using black on orange.[1]
Format

Vehicle registration plates of Laos' Format contain the name of the province where this car is registered at the top of the sign. Below is a registration licenses. On the two Lao serial letters, first letter from ກ, ຂ, ຄ, ນ, ມ, ຣ, ລ, ວ, ຫ, ອ and ຮ is register for normal passenger car; ຈ, ຍ, ດ, ຕ and ທ is for a motorbike; ສ is for tricycle such as tuk-tuk; ບ is for heavy truck. The second letter and a number are a register format. This format has used since 2001.
Starting from 2024, when electric vehicles become more popular and usage in Laos, EV's License plate will have green sticker labeled as "EV" at the top left corner of the plate to signified as this vehicle is fully electric power source.
