don't bite them
. Before creating a new redirect, you should check the following:

  1. Is the request well-formed? If the redirect already exists, or if no target has been supplied (and no target can be easily found), then decline the request.
  2. Is there an obvious reason for the redirect? In most cases, a suggested redirect will be a misspelling or common alternate name of the main article. In some cases, however, the relation is a little more obscure. In this case, the user needs to provide an adequate explanation for the redirect. In the event of a very unclear link, sources may be needed to back up the user's request. If no reasoning is provided and no sources are given, decline the request using {{
    subst:afc redirect
    |v}}
    .
  3. Is the redirect unambiguous? Are there other likely targets for the redirect? If the proposed redirect can equally well refer to two disparate targets, then it probably
    shouldn't exist
    . In some cases, creating a disambiguation page is an option.
  4. If you feel the redirect should be declined for some other reason: See Wikipedia:Redirect for more guidelines on when redirects should exist and follow the declining directions below.

If unsure whether the redirect is plausible enough, it is best to err on the side of accepting. If declining a close call, consider mentioning that the user can bring it up for further discussion at Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion.

Accepting a redirect request

Close the submission

  1. Add the template {{
    afc-c
    |a}}
    directly under the section header.
  2. Add the substituted template {{
    subst:afc redirect
    }}
    below the main text of the request (see the table below for the various response options). Add your own signature immediately after, using four tildes (~~~~).
  3. Add the template {{
    afc-c
    |b}}
    at the very bottom of the section, below your reply. Failure to include this template will cause all text on the rest of the page to disappear!
  4. Preview the page, then save your changes if everything is correct.

Create the redirect

  1. Navigate to the desired redirect page and edit it.
  2. Add the text: #REDIRECT [[TARGET]] to the page; ensuring that you replace 'TARGET' with the page title of the target page.
  3. Add any applicable
    redirect templates
    underneath.
  4. Leave an edit summary explaining the creation of the redirect and save the page.

Additional tasks

  1. Open the new redirect's talk page.
  2. Add the
    subst:WPAFC/redirect
    }} to the top of the page.
  3. Add any other applicable
    WikiProject banners
    and save the page.

Declining a redirect request

Articles for creation can also be used to submit templates, disambiguation pages and articles for deletion discussions. In these cases, there are no

notability issues. You just need to decide whether the page is useful and appropriate to Wikipedia. For these submissions it will most likely be necessary to include a custom decline reason, using the AfC Helper Script. Refer to official guidelines for guidance on when to disambiguation pages or templates. This can be found at: (Wikipedia:Disambiguation or Wikipedia:Template namespace). Articles for deletion discussions may be created on behalf of anonymous users, who cannot start them. Aside from general reasons for declining a submission (empty, gibberish, spam, copyright violations, etc.), AFD submissions should generally be accepted. (See Wikipedia:Deletion policy and instructions for opening an AFD
for more information).

Scripts

There are three helper scripts available that make reviewing very fast:

  • User:PhantomTech/scripts/AFCRHS.js, which has a modern interface but doesn't support categories (not currently working? as of 2018-04-07)
  • User:EnterpriseyBot/AFCRHS.js
    , which is basically a copy of the old AFCH beta script with some new features
  • User:Eejit43/scripts/afcrc-helper which features an easier to use interface with many quality of life features (recommended)
