Green Flash (optical phenomenon)

optical phenomena that occur shortly after or during sunset or before or during sunrise, when a green spot is visible, usually for no more than a second or two, above the sun, or a green ray shoots up from the sunset point. Green flashes are actually a group of phenomena stemming from different causes. Here's an explanation of that particular sequence written Dr. Andrew Young: "I think that really is a short duct
, with the Sun becoming visible in the duct more quickly than one usually sees. Thanks for assembling this nice sequence! The sunset lasted quite long, didn't it? The optical path through the air is very great at the end; the images become more and more distorted by irregularities in the refraction -- both waves and turbulence."
