This historic painting by

Benjamin Robert Haydon is already a Featured Picture on Wiki Commons. Copying Dcoetzee's rationale from that nomination, "this is a high-quality, 10 megapixel image of a famous painting from the National Portrait Gallery, London which depicts in arduous detail the pivotal 1840 Anti-Slavery Society Convention with an elderly Thomas Clarkson

speaking. It contains 136 identifiable persons, and details of it have been used to illustrate over 28 different articles, many of which have no other known portrait of the subject."

Since that nomination, it has been added to many more articles, and has an added bonus that on some articles (i.e. Anti-Slavery Society), a clickable grid has been created which allows a user to identify and read about the people at the conference by moving their cursor over the painting. So in summary, high quality, historic context and demonstrates the Wiki format to its best abilities. This is about as encyclopedic as it gets, really.
