Captions include: denomination, reference number, and person depicted.
The series of 1890/1891 was issued in denominations of $1, $2, $5, $10, $20, $50 (1891 only), $100, $500 (approved for 1891 but never issued), and $1,000. The majority of the notes depict historically significant figures in U.S. military history (6), as well as a Secretary of State, Secretary of the Treasury, and a Chief Justice of the United States
