I have been editing for 10+ years. There was always a "system" (procedure) for editing, with which, naturally, I became accustomed (almost reflexively), after so many years and so many edits. Just a few days ago, that whole system (procedure) seemed to change, just out of the blue.

Under the "old procedure", I would type in my edits; and then hit "Submit Changes" (or some such). Period. And the "Submit Changes" button was down, toward the bottom of the page.

With the "new procedure", after I type in my edits, I now get one or two questions that I must answer, before my edit will go through. (I think some type of reminder to add an edit summary; or some such.) And the "Submit Changes" button is now to the top right of the page. And I believe it takes an "extra" one or two steps (clicks) -- when compared with the old procedure -- to have the edit go through.

So, what the heck is going on? Is there some new editing procedure that was put into effect? Or did I somehow change some sort of "settings" in my account? How can I get back to the "old procedure" of editing?

I now notice that my edits in my edit log are marked with a notation that says "Tag: 2017 wikitext editor" (or some such). Which I never saw before. Also, when I logged in with an IP address -- not my regular account -- it allowed me to edit according to the "old procedure".

Or did Wikipedia automatically change this setting for me? @Tenryuu: Thanks. No, I never fiddled with meta-wikimedia, as far as I know. I don't even know what that phrase means or even where I would begin to find it or fiddle with it. The more I think about it, I can't imagine that I made this settings change. I wonder if Wikipedia can/did it automatically? Even if it was a computer glitch. Joseph A. Presumably due to worries about identity theft, it is sometimes difficult to find a birthdate. I'm working on a draft article about someone where a source identifies the month and year but not the day. This might be an interesting compromise, providing general information about age but not specific enough for identity theft. However I did a quick perusal of birth date templates, and did not see any that would accept month and year without the day. Are there any? Hi Sphilbrick, even though its name might be misleading, {{Birth year and age}} seems to be made for this.

{{Birth year and age|1966|4}} produces April 1966 (age 58). When the month is not over yet, e.g. birth in May 1966 would show as May 1966 (age 57–58) – NJD-DE (talk) 16:56, 2 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
