Though I've already asked this question on the Reference Desk before, I only received one response to the "where did this meme come from" part of it before it got archived. This time, let's disregard that part.
Earlier this year, I came across some videos which take frames from existing world history map videos by channels like Geography and Space, Ollie Bye and Algol and put them together, often in reverse chronological order and sometimes using VHS-inspired effects. These types of videos feature a song that starts out fast but goes slower and slower as each video progresses further and further into the past. The first line goes "I know what you want, girl", one of the later lines goes "I have mental issues", and the lyrics feature a couple of instances of profanity. She's been on the TV a lot lately. I don't know anything about her music or why she is such a celebrity but it seems to me that she has an amazing glam operation going on, more than any movie star or other music performer I can think of. If I didn't know better, I'd think (in a good way) that I was looking at a Marvel superhero instead of a regular human. Actually I can't think of any MCU characters who come even close. Maybe in the actual comic books, some characters evoke the same thing, but that's on a printed page where the viewer's mind does more of the work. I don't pay attention to this stuff normally, so maybe I'm overlooking some actors/actresses or supermodels who pull off something similar.

Any idea what they are doing in terms of hair, make-up, and costume? Does she have unusual underlying looks that they had to start with? Does she have to spend hours in a make-up chair before every appearance, like movie actors before a shoot? Is there an industry that does this and are there awards for it, other than movie awards?

I remember one of Leonard Nimoy's autobiogrophies describing what it took to get made up as Spock.

I did a web search about Swift's hairstyle and found lots of historical pics but nothing specific about how they got the texture, which seems to me to be unusual and a big part of the effect.

What with the bangs, to me she looks more like the girl next door, with the glam mostly due to her outfit. Maybe her phenomenal success is due to many people actually liking her music, but this is just my speculation.  --Lambiam 13:28, 21 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

That's a reasonable assumption. If her music didn't sell, she wouldn't be a big deal. Also, when I've seen her on talk shows, she comes across as very "normal", and her funny appearances in commercials also suggest a degree of down-to-earth-ness. Thanks all. Of course I didn't mean to insinuate that Swift's celebrity came from her glam rather than her music. The music was earlier after all. But, girl-next-door wouldn't have occurred to me. Her hair texture (at least on TV and in online photos) really does look superhuman, and the police-siren lipstick plus the make-up isn't something most people wear every day. And I pick up a Madonna-like affect though maybe that's just me.
