Voting for the ArbComm is the least I should have done. Actually, it isn't as serious as you guys all made it out to be, it was just a WikiVacation of indeterminate duration to let me cool off (and do something about my disastrous
GPA). Well, been monitoring the ArbComm elections, and... certain people I'd rather see... gone/deposed... are now off the ArbComm at least. Been doing some minor edits, and helping with a page that a fellow SJW2 enthusiast got on PR and eventually (hopefully) FAC. Semester finals coming up, and gotta write an application for a summer programme at MIT... be back in Feb, if mass-scale revolution has not already taken place. Automated entry for Portal:Malaysia and Portal:Singapore?
Hey, I notice that Portal:Malaysia and Portal:Singapore are being neglected but Current events in Malaysia and Singapore is being actively updated. Is there a way to automatically do an update for news on each portal and then send in those news to Current events in Malaysia and Singapore automatically? Like, doing the entry just once instead of having to do it twice (i.e. once at the portal and another at Current events in Malaysia and Singapore)? Edit warring
I would just like to warn everyone here that our best friend has recently began bringing his edit warring into a page as innocent as Ang Mo Kio, insisting on adding languages to romanisised script when none is actually neccesary. This action will have affected plenty of other pages related to Singaporean places, and I asked him to discuss this with the community before insisting on changing a template, which he chose not to but decided to revert instead. Instantnood, it is implied that the pinyin is referring to the Mandarin. Use a pipe for "Mandarin pinyin" perhaps, without using ugly parentheses. Given other cases of romanisation, the context in which pinyin is used should be self-evident.

Consolidation of Primary & Secondary School articles

Individual articles while we have a clear lack of information regarding each schools. Thus, until when we can introduce more information, all those stubs can only result with confusion. I would disagree that stubs contribute to "confusion". How does that happen, and any examples to cite? That they are stubs just calls for us to improve on them. Trying to go the opposite direction kills the incentive for improvement.--Huaiwei 09:27, 23 January 2006 (UTC)

I am not exactly talking about shifting and merging all articles related to Primary & secondary school, but to consolidate all those extreme stub-cases based on their cluster zones, such as N5 cluster with Marsiling secondary school and so on, if the article itself is too subjective to be incorporated into a single, individual article. Yes, that is what I am trying to bring to you guys attention: Consolidate *some* of the stub articles, though I am not saying that we should be deleting them. So in a sense, for instance, the N5 Cluster Zone article will pay reference to the schools under it, a brief introductory note, their principals, their superintendents, their cluster activites; cluster activities include those annual TAF Carnivals, where Trim & Fit programme students are gathered to challenge in all sort of sporting events against other schools within the cluster zones; Cultural Appreciation Festive or relevant and so on. Sometimes these clusters might even organise cluster against cluster events, where the top performing students of each cluster is sent for competition against top preforming students of other cluster. use of adjectives
Well, I have to bring this up again. I notice we keep using a lot of adjectives for new articles, ie. something is pleasant, refined, well-landscaped, expansive, extensive, etc....it tells opinion, but doesn't tell the reader much. So, one could put it, "it was the intent of the designers", or use numbers, "the park is 14 hectares large"...we could use estimates if we want to. Especially if we physically went there and took photos, surely we can estimate the amount of space, right? :D So we have two alternatives to present such a statement, and they are more informative then "such and such building is massive/pleasant", because we replace opinion with facts. If we have no statistics, we can roughly estimate it ourselves. (We were physically there anyway, and thus photos prove that it isn't OR.) :D

Goal for August 9th
I propose this....it's time Singapore got onto the FAC road, so I think after we do Sentosa (and this is a long-term goal), let's aim to make it FAC sometime before August 9th, then nominate it for main page by August 9th. How's that? ;-)
Some priorities:
Culture section getting bloated. We should also remember to exchange information between articles and subarticles now and then.
Clean up demographics
Trim sections
Then we should be well on our way.

Blank map of Singapore
Is a copy of the blank outline map of Singapore, as used in [7] and lots of other maps, available somewhere in SVG or some other vector-based format? The closest I could find is this, but it's only a giant PNG and it has some districts marked off too. Jpatokal 16:16, 6 February 2006 (UTC)

The maps created are with the hard work of Vsion, although he seems to be using some cheem program normal earthlings like myself will probably never comprehend. :D I have been thinking long and hard on drawing a very detailed map of Singapore using Adobe Illustrator, which should make editing relatively easier for all. Actually, I also have problems using that "cheem program", and I've to relearn it every time i try to use it, so I won't recommend it to you guys :). I also couldn't find any vector-based format of singapore map, it would certainly be nice to have it. The data I have maybe can convert to SVG after some hacking, but this will take some time (weeks or months). Hopefully someone has or find other alternative resources. Haha is it. Hmm...so about all of us help to draw a single high-resolution vector-based map, saved in the .ai format, and which will come with multiple layers for all kinds of details? The only major problem I have encountered so far is the maximum file size limit, which is 16383 X 16383 pixels in size. I did the estimations, and it means the entire Singapore map has to be smaller than 1:10000 scale (the old street directory, ie the pre-"mighty minds" ones, is 1:7500, while the master plan of Singapore by the URA is 1:5000). This is a tad smaller than my desired size, and the other program I know which meets this requirement is CorelDRAW. Other than that, I have found sources for detailed land-use zoning maps (the Master Plan of coz), building outline maps, and yes...I am even considering colour-zoning roads based on the number of lanes!! :D--Huaiwei 06:28, 7 February 2006 (UTC)

So the resolution of my data is as the image shown on the right, slightly smaller than 5000x3000 pixels, not good enough for street maps. There's a lot of information that's not that obvious about how the country is run....statutes might be a good source, that we haven't tapped into however. It basically tells us how things are regulated, which would be useful.

Not Singapore-related but affect Singaporeans
I was not sure where this is supposed to go but I can keep silent no more. This is not really a Singapore-related article, but I urge you to give your comments about this issue. If anyone of you have been noticing this entry, you will know that I have been trying to defend Singapore's case in their ban against Singaporeans. They made their termination message available only to Singaporeans after international viewers was alerted to it, and removed it entirely shortly after I posted a printscreen of their termination message. Thing is, is a removed screenshot considered verifiable content? May I ask what course of action should I be taking?

Frankly, I do sincerely doubt what putfile can really put in place with such an atrocious act - against the Asian society that is so conservative to execute a person by hanging? Seem like all S'pore related information/lists are scuttle everywhere in wiki, some info should be merge first, everyone should tried to compact the information in some way instead of allocation first. Hello! User:Vsion referred me here to the SGpedian's notice board, so here I am!
I'm a 14-year-old boy, from Singapore (duh). My friends consider me intelligent, but weird, and with an interesting sense of humour. My passions are computers, creative writing and chess. No wonder I like editing Wikipedia - it's to do with computers and creative writing!
On Wikipedia, I mostly contribute information to articles about computers/websites and Singapore TV shows/movies. I also regularly participate in discussions about Wikipedia. I created the
Requests for feedback
. I'm still a relatively inexperienced editor, having joined on February 2006, and still struggle with policy and markup often. (see link at bottom)
I am surprised that there is no Wikipedia:WikiProject Singapore. I think we should create one, as many Singapore articles lack standards. We currently have the Singapore Collaboration of the Week, and could integrate it into the WikiProject.
I would be a willing and enthusiastic participant in this project. I am a huge fan of Jack Neo movies (remember, I wrote
Homerun). I could write the currently non-existent articles The Best Bet, I Do I Do and One More Chance. I could also collaborate with other editors to expand the Jack Neo article. In addition, I could write articles on notable Singapore drama serials, such as A Child's Hope
, and expand existing articles on these drama serials.
However, the
WP:V
policy will make it difficult for me to write/expand articles about Singapore drama serials. (see link at bottom)
Another reason for coming here is to make Wikifriends to collaborate to improve articles. (see link at bottom)

I'm redirecting it to this page for now. I think a WikiProject has a narrower focus than a noticeboard - one is to identify and ask - whereas a WikiProject might have a set plan. We do have Singaporean Places - but if a subproject needs to be created, then it the redirect can be converted. But it will probably be subordinate to this noticeboard. That way, there's still one big central meeting place.

The notice board is more about socializing among Singaporean Wikipedians. The WikiProject will be focused on improving Singapore-related articles. With a WikiProject, we will have more powers. For example, a WikiProject Singapore userbox, and the ability to make pages part of our WikiProject. I suppose the difference is finding editors who want to actively work on Singapore-related articles, rather than SGpedians who might work on something else might be a different issue. I don't think the noticeboard is really about "socialising", although I think with categories we already can specify pages. Specific things like Singaporean cuisine or Singapore politics might be invoked.

Blocks to 202.156.6.54 - Issue affecting all Singaporean Wikipedians
Hello to all Singaporean Wikipedians. I wish to raise an issue affecting all of us.
Currently, Singapore's population is over 4 million. Most of us are using StarHub. We all share the IP 202.156.6.54.
This IP is frequently used for vandalism. As a result, it is often blocked. However, these blocks will prevent all Singaporean users from editing Wikipedia. There will be massive collateral damage - more than AOL.
I believe some of you have previously been affected by this block. I have. And I'm not the only one to complain about it. I remember Stefan also complaining about it.
WP:BEANS, it is advice given exactly for this scenario.... do not understand! if you had a WP:DontRockTheBoat I could accept, but not Beans! I understand what you can do with this and that is the reson I have not shared this before, but I also think that it should be common knowledge or stopped? Stefan

OK, no reply I guess that means that I should give up, nevermind I managed to find the last and most importaint 'rule' in wikipedia that I think supports my claim that this is NOT a
the ability of anyone to edit' or 'Ability of anyone to edit articles without registering' depending where you look. Not sure if it means both or only the last? But I would argue that it means that anyone should be able to edit wikipedia, unless specifically blocked which I am not when starhub IP is. So therefore I say that this is a accepted way of getting around the bug in wikipedia software that blocks me when the IP i'm sharing and using is blocked. BEANS talks about don't give examples of how to cause disruption , if you interpret it that way that means that we shoul dnot tell people about the edit button, because if no one knows there would be no vandalism! WP:Assume_good_faith! My intent is not to misuse this, my intent is to help users make more and better articles in wikipedia, this can be used to do bad things, I'm sure you know and understand that, but if I wanted to do bad things on wikipedia, and you offerend me this tip or a copy of pywikipedia, I know what I could do more damage with, and pywikipedia is freely avaliable and accepted. advice to AOL users, if you consider that to be dangerous I suggest that you update it and remove the advice! And if I had a lift that was as reliable as wikipedia I would take the stairs! Or try to make it reliable which I have been trying to in a nice way without much success, people are upset when they have to do one revert, but are happy blocking starhub for 24h, check the last 3 blocks, I do not think that the oldest 2 of them where correct, but then Wikipedia:Blocking_policy does not say much at all, I think it should state much clearer what to do with shared proxies, it should state that it is OK for another admin to remove a block on a shared IP. I have 2 proposals for the vandalism watch and [articles / categories] for deletion sections.
For the vandalism watch section, no articles are to be listed in the section unless they have been vandalised at least 4 times in 48 hours (2 days). Anything less than this is not persistent vandalism, and the article would merit no more attention than any other unprotected Wikipedia page at all, just insert a link to
list of Singapore-related topics
. This will encourage more updates to the article, and deny someone the temptation to vandalise a Singapore-related article just for the sake of having it show up on the noticeboard.
For the deletion section, from now on no more entries are to be listed in the section. Instead we will point everyone monitoring Singapore-related deletion discussions to

Regarding the vandalism watch, I found some recent vandalism that are disturbing, which involved introducing mis-information into articles such as changing a number or inserting a gramatically correct sentence with wrong information. (such as [12]), Counter-Vandalism Unit agents won't recognised these as vandalism unless they are familar with the subject. I suspect it is the same persistent vandal doing this. I am hoping to make a list of these vandalism in the noticeboard, to identify trends, investigate his or her modus operandi, and connect the dots, and so forth. Logging incidents of vandalism (especially of the mis-information type) is therefore important, also we should archive the list which we are currently not doing. --Vsion 06:53, 14 June 2006 (UTC)
There could be a global vandalism and misinformation syndicate targeting Wikipedia. Who knows? It's not worth finding out whether your guess is true, because it does not make a difference one way or other. The vandalism of most articles is infrequent, and Singapore articles are no exception. Just revert, warn, and let live - analysing vandal brains is not going to produce anything worthwhile. IMO, undetected mis-information is the greatest threat to wikipedia's reputation and hence the whole project. The
John Seigenthaler Sr. Wikipedia biography controversy is a good example. A single article, or a single vandal, can cause havoc. Misinformation are potential "time-bombs" (to borrow PAP's phrase), especially in biography articles. We certainly need better tools to fight vandals. An archive of vandalism will, at the mininum, show which articles have been vandalised and new users can add them to their watchlists. Probably the wordings in the "Vandal alert!" section should be changed, the original intention is not just to alert but also to archive incidents of vandalism . --Vsion

(Since kimchi has shut down the "vandal alert" section, let me post this here). In Talk:Chee Soon Juan, it was revealed that the article Chee Soon Juan has serious factual problem, and apparently Chee himself has issued a long list of challenged items in the article. Many of the POV and inaccurate statements were added to the article and remained undetected for almost a year. While to be interviewed by ISD is one cool thing, to be sued by Chee would be quite embarassing. The answer to the first question would be no, Wikipedia:Verifiability is the policy that applies here. Chee, in this case, did the right thing, by emailing the editors instead of editing the article himself. Those contributions by the three anons I listed in Talk:Chee Soon Juan have serious problems. I wonder what measures we can take to prevent this from occuring again. Hmmm... how about creating a new section in the noticeboard, for "Request for comment / request to verify"? It would be more prominent compared to the "to do" list. Wikipedia:Verifiability even illustrated the example of having an article subject (or his research subject) providing information himself to wikipedians, stating that "Even though you have this from the author himself, you cannot include the fact that he said it in your Wikipedia entry." Dr Chee may have done us a favour by not editing the page, but his comments alone wont count for much until he could actually show us published information for us to rely on. And a reputable publisher too while we are at it, if we may consider the party website as a partisan one. As I have already explained, the primary intention of a chronological list is clear. That intention dosent deny individual cases like yours the liberty to cease calling yourself a newbie. It is not meant to be foolproof, for this is not a scientific list, but one only maintained by individuals who volunteerily add themselves in. Even if it does not accurately reflect to the last dot how new someone is, it does at least tell us just how difficult or easy it is for new members to find this page! :D

I'm probably not leaving. I am currently looking for WikiProjects to join, to contribute to articles of interest, and to make Wikifriends. You could help me by suggesting good WikiProjects. Yes, I'm known for my resilience. Being the unwitting victim of an IP block won't make me leave so easily. The problem is that it kept happening, especially when I was trying to contribute information, and that really stressed me. I let my stress get the better of me in the wrong way, and I lost my focus as a contributor of information. I've been informed of some recent changes to the blocking mechanism which are supposed to prevent me from being a victim of collateral damage, but there appear to be some problems with it. On a more positive note, I've just decided to sign up for the Computer and Video Games WikiProject; I will work on the following articles: Neopets, RuneScape, AdventureQuest and Chip's Challenge - and I hope to get the first two to Good Articles. However, I am still thinking about starting a WikiProject Singapore. I was chatting on MSN with Tdxiang, and he added a red link to a WikiProject (Singaporean entertainment) on the noticeboard page. However, a general Singapore WikiProject would garner more participants. Being a Singaporean and listing oneself on the noticeboard does not neccesarily mean one is actively involved in contributing to Singapore-related articles; that's where the WikiProject comes in. --J.L.W.S. Ok got a response from outside of Wikipedia. In short, this is a "corporate wordmark" flag that is supposed to be used to promote the tourism industry in Singapore and mostly appears outside of the hotels. I checked, and I do not think it was a photoshop image, since I was told the photo is from the Swissôtel Stamford Hotel, since this is where the 117th meeting of the IOC took place last year. This noticeboard is a good start. It's a place for Singaporeans to meet each other and chat. However, I think we should be bold, go further, and create a WikiProject Singapore, to work on improving the standards of Singapore-related articles.
With a WikiProject, we can conduct activities such as the SCOTF, which is now inactive. In addition, as a WikiProject, we can have our own userbox. We can also place the WikiProject Singapore template on the articles of Singapore-related articles. One significant advantage of a WikiProject is that non-Singaporeans who are interested in Singapore-related articles can work with us to improve articles.
The most important question we must ask ourselves is this: We are all SGpedians. But are all, or at least most, of us working to improve Singapore-related articles? If the answer is "yes", we may not need a WikiProject.
I will contribute to WikiProject Singapore by writing articles (and improve exisitng articles) on Singapore TV shows/movies. Hopefully, by collaborating with other SGpedians to improve such articles (especially those I write), I can make more Wikifriends. It would be great if we can make some of these articles

Er...I am not verhemently in opposition, but why should we limit ourselves based on nothing but in name? This may be called a "notice board", but does that mean the same ends cant be met with a WikiProject? Richardshusr told me that Homerun (film) (and Google Groups, another article I wrote) coud become a good article with some effort by me. In August, I plan to expand and polish the article further, together with other editors, and by the end of August, I intend to Peer Review it and then nominate it for Good Article.

Recently, some changes were made to the blocking policy, that were successful in eliminating some of the collateral damage caused by blocks. However, the problem has not been completely eradicated, as autoblocks still cause collateral damage, and more so than regular blocks. Hmm...why are notices for the above section moved to an obscure location that hardly anyone seems to be tracking now? We are having an article like List of bridges in Singapore due for deletion, and I hardly see any inputs from other Singaporeans? Attempted to change Portal:Singapore ended up in a total fiasco!
Hello everyone! I recently attempted to edit the Singapore portal to at least a featured portal status. But the attempt ended in a total mess! But don't worry. I reverted my edits to the last acceptable version. The reason for this is because I noticed that the portal needed a major makeover. The edit links of each portal boxes were linked to template pages. Compared to the Featured portals, these links are led to the respective sub-portal pages. I feel that this portal has the potential to be featured. I accept full responsibilities for my actions and wish to apologize if any harm came to this. Hello SGpedians, I appeal to all of you to help out in the bid of Wikimania 2007. This is tough on us, but we may get potential sponsors, if all of you can help. It will be great if you could. It will also let we SGpedians' get a good reputation and be well known in Singapore and the rest of the world. But first, I hope that you can help fill in details and particpate in the discussions here. We need a strong team to get the conference. I hope to get sponsors and the license, please give ideas and suggestions for the conference. Wikimedians will come to our country and see how wonderful our home is. A good start is to list your name as part of the local team. Something is better than nothing. Look at the bright side of things. Please do help in the bid, it will bring us glory. Greetings, fellow SGpedians. I am planning to improve Wikipedia's coverage of Jack Neo movies.
This is a mammoth project, and will probably take at least a month. Therefore, I am seeking SGpedians who are willing to collaborate with me on this project. WikiProject Singapore redirects here, so it is clear this is the place to post.
I do not need help with writing the articles; I believe I have adequate writing skills. There are a few things those collaborating could help me with:
We should agree on a common structure for all the articles on the Jack Neo movies. The articles Jack Neo and Megan Zheng are about people, not movies, and therefore will not have the same structure as the other articles.
Create a template which has links to each of the eight articles on Jack Neo movies. For an example of what I mean, see the template at the bottom of
MobileOne
.
Once I have written an article, or made my significant expansion to an article:
Copyedit the article.
Ensure proper formatting of references and fix any other formatting problems.
Further expand the article to fill in any gaps in my knowledge.
Add references.
If you are interested in collaborating with me on these articles, please inform me by leaving a reply here, and optionally, also dropping a note on my talk page. Many hands do make light work, and I hope we can collaborate to ensure Wikipedia has a comprehensive coverage of Jack Neo movies, and that I can make a few Wikifriends in the process. Primary schools in Northern Ireland
I have been adding Primary schools articles for Northern Ireland, largely stubs, to which new contributors have started to add to and develop etc, but have come under attack by people proposing that all such primary school articles should be deleted as being non-notable etc. You can see the debate at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Abercorn Primary School. A little help would be useful (assuming you agree with my arguments). I have been quoting Singapore as a precedent area where primary schools are listed and articles appear. Thanks. About a requested article.
I would like to comment about the potential article, 2005 Singapore Fashion Festival which is requested in the notice board. A google search shows only about two or three unique hits for this topic. Clearly, this is a non-notable event. On a personal note, I do not mind creating this article, but I am afraid that it would be deleted through an AfD process in the near future. So, should I remove this red-link from the notice board? Any comments about this would be greatly helpful here. Bak Chor Mee
I think the Bak Chor Mee section in the Mee Pok article should be removed and put as new article. If one has eaten Bak Chor Mee, we should understand that it is not always Mee Pok. Many Bak Chor Mee are also Mee Kia, and some stalls that sells only BCM also uses other noodles. It also needs to be expanded. HistoryManiac 17:54, 16 September 2006 (UTC)

This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. I would just like to draw fellow Singaporean's attention to edits by one particular user by the name of

This user has been known to engage in prolonged disruptive editing, and I have long noticed his curious edits on Singapore related articles, often in childish response to my edits on HK-related articles. "Single-party state" is descriptive, and not necessarily negative nor positive. Singapore is described as a "single-part state" not only on Wikipedia [20][21], including an academic from the NUS [22]. The reason why I was barred from editing the article on Singapore because you insisted that the abolished City Council had duties over the entire Singapore (which was not true), and the entirety of modern Singapore is officially defined as or designated to be one city. WP:MUSIC guidelines. Moreover, all the songs which this band has released as not has any charted hits in this country. This band has not gone in for any international tour so far. Okay guys. Haven't interacted much with those here collectively, but some have seen my work in Singapore-related topics. Started a new article which is strangely lacking since there is so much info on the "now" but not the "then". Only one section is halfway complete, that is the post-war period. How we can help: the Library of Congress reference at the bottom actually has not a bad story to tell. Rather than cut-and-paste, I've been rephrasing, summarizing, wikifying and supplementing with other articles already extant. Yeap, our cultural-related articles have been relatively neglected compared to articles on infrastructure, history, etc. It is good to get one culture/arts-related article up for GA as a start. I think that the Cast, Reception and Sequels sections are adequately referenced. The Plot section doesn't need references - it just needs rewriting. Only the Political satire section lacks references. We should decide whether to reference it, delete it or leave it alone.
Due to the lack of information and references available for Singaporean topics, it will be difficult to write a good and well-referenced Production section. We will need to decide what information should go into the Production section (music? shooting? writing? crew?) and find referenced information. To answer Vsion: yes, the movie does have a theme song.

There is only one article there so far. I would think that all the "main articles" listed under the main sections in Singapore should be Top-importance articles, which give us about 10 top-importance articles. I was looking at Wikipedia:WikiProject China and Wikipedia:WikiProject Canada, and I suddenly had a change of heart. It dosent look too much work to form a wikiproject page based on that template, and move some of our more collaborative-based functionalities currently in our notice board to the Wikiporject while maintaining the notice board for what its meant to be...notices of good work, new articles, and so on. Of course if we are up to it, we can always evolve into the likes of Wikipedia:WikiProject Australia later, but do the rest of you think we can manage with the simplier version as characterised by the first two egs, or if this is needed at all?

Now that it looks like the Singaporean WikiProject aspect is expanding beyond the SGpedians' notice board, I made a little navigational aid template to help navigation between the related pages. Feel free to modify it as you see fit:

Infobox Politician}} exists, but it's primarily US-centric, and a Singaporean infobox could better encapsulate the political scene in Singapore. I would do one myself, except that being the politically-apathetic Singaporean that I am, I have no idea what information would be relevant. Comments and/or offers to take up the challenge? -ryand

The above article was moved to Pedra Branca, South China Sea by an admin despite the fact that the dicussion mentioned both options as possibilities, but with more indicating Pedra Branca as the preferred version. I wonder if the community here sees a need for collaborative action in light of this prematured conclusion by an admin (and which a user even thanked for "helping out" there [28])?--Huaiwei 17:04, 27 November 2006 (UTC)
