The company started with manufacturing ice cubes[3] as well as passion fruit concentrates, which were later discontinued.[2] Badak was later launched in the 1920s. Badak is Indonesian for rhinoceros; named so by the company because they said its hard skin and strong horns meant that Badak will stand strong against other international rivals. However at the same time, rivals like Coca-Cola and Fanta were beginning mass distribution across the country, burdening the company and especially Surbeck, who was killed by the Indonesians who fought against the Dutch post-independence. Factory worker Elman Tanjung replaced Surbeck's role as chief executive officer (CEO), and after the company's nationalization[3] in 1971, Julius Hutabarat took the role.[4] Currently, his son Ronald Hutabarat assumes as CEO.[2]
