Belgium Township was organized in 1880. A large share of the early settlers being natives of Belgium caused the name to be selected.^[3]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 36.5 square miles (95 km²), of which 36.4 square miles (94 km²) is land and 0.04 square miles (0.10 km²) (0.05%) is water.
