Benedict is a city in Wilson County, Kansas, United States,[1] along the Verdigris River. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 69.[3]

History

Benedict had its start in the year 1866 by the building of the railroad through that territory.[4] Benedict was laid out at the junction of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway and the Missouri Pacific Railroad.[5] It was named for S. S. Benedict.[6]

Geography

Benedict is located at 37°37′37″N 95°44′37″W / 37.62694°N 95.74361°W / 37.62694; -95.74361 (37.627014, -95.743500).[7] According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.15 square miles (0.39 km2), all of it land.[8]

Of the 33 households, 30.3% had children under the age of 18; 45.5% were married couples living together; 36.4% had a female householder with no spouse or partner present. 36.4% of households consisted of individuals and 21.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.[11] The average household size was 2.3 and the average family size was 2.9.[15] The percent of those with a bachelor's degree or higher was estimated to be 1.4% of the population.[16]

10.1% of the population was under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 29.0% from 25 to 44, 26.1% from 45 to 64, and 27.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 48.3 years. For every 100 females, there were 109.1 males.[11] For every 100 females ages 18 and older, there were 100.0 males.[11]

The average household size was 2.15 and the average family size was 2.74.

The median age in the city was 54.8 years. 13.7% of residents were under the age of 18; 5.4% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 19.1% were from 25 to 44; 26% were from 45 to 64; and 35.6% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 50.7% male and 49.3% female.
