The Midland Railway 270 Class was a class of

steam locomotives that was manufactured by Kitson and Company for the Midland Railway between 1852 and 1853.[1]

History

Between 1852 and 1853,

steam locomotives that Matthew Kirtley had requested for and they were all delivered to the Midland Railway (MR) after being built, where the Midland Railway had designated them as the 270 Class.[1]

The Midland Railway 270 Class was designed for hauling

mixed traffic trains and for hauling freight trains. It was one of the six basic steam locomotive designs that operated the entire Midland Railway network by 1914. The other five designs were: a Class 1 0-6-0 tank engines, Class 1 0-4-4T tank engines, Class 2 4-4-0s, Class 3 0-6-0s (both tank and tender variants), and the Class 4 4-4-0s.[1]

When built, all ten were all numbered as 270–279 until 1907, when only three had been renumbered to 2309–2312 in 1907, the class was withdrawn in 1924 and not a single one was preserved, they were all scrapped.[1]
