Vanlallawmzuala Varte (born c. 1990), also known as Lza Varte, is an Indian

cyclist and environmental advocate from Mizoram. He is best known for becoming the first person from Mizoram to cycle across all Indian states and Union Territories.[1][2][3] His record-setting journey was recognized by the India Book of Records[4], and he is noted for raising awareness about air pollution and sustainable living.[5]

Early life and background

Varte is from Mission Veng, Aizawl, Mizoram.[1] He is active in the Mission Veng Youth Adventure Club and serves as a leader within the Mizoram Cycling Association (MiCA), where he works to promote cycling and environmental awareness in his local community.[1]

Ride to Clean Air

On 25 January 2024, Varte embarked on a solo expedition named Ride to Clean Air, supported by the Mizoram Pollution Control Board and organized under the Mission LiFE initiative.[2] The campaign focused on advocating for clean air and sustainable living practices.[6]

Over the course of 286 days, Varte cycled 17,043 km, covering all Indian states and Union Territories.[2][3][6] His route included demanding terrains like the Umling La pass—the world’s highest motorable road.[5] He recorded his longest single-day ride at 207.82 km, and reached a maximum speed of 68.8 km/h during the journey.[5] During his tour, he faced extreme weather, illness, and diverse regional challenges, but also took pride in sharing Mizoram’s culture nationwide.[2][6]

Varte’s journey included speaking at schools, planting trees, and participating in environmental events across the country.[5][1][7]

Recognition

His feat earned him the record for being the fastest person—and the first from Mizoram—to cycle across all Indian states and Union Territories, as certified by the India Book of Records.

Governor of Mizoram, Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati, for his contributions to environmental awareness and sustainable living.[3][8]

Legacy

Varte’s ambitious ride has inspired many across Mizoram and beyond to take up cycling and adopt eco-friendly habits.[1][3] He continues to work with youth groups and environmental organizations throughout Northeast India to promote a cleaner, greener future.[6][7]
