Personal life
Rounds was born on 7 June 1843 in Cattaraugus County, New York. He married Maria Allbaugh in 1865. He died in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on 1 May 1916 and was buried in Wood National Cemetery in Milwaukee.[1][4]
Military service
Rounds enlisted in the Army as a private at
On 12 May 1864, at the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, Rounds (still a private) captured an unspecified Confederate flag, which earned him the Medal of Honor. His medal citation reads:[2]
The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Private Lewis A. Rounds, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 12 May 1864, while serving with Company D, 8th Ohio Infantry, in action at Spotsylvania, Virginia, for capture of flag.

Rounds was mustered out of the Army on 12 July 1865.[4] His Medal of Honor is accredited to Ohio.[3]
