Mouthe (French pronunciation: [mut]) is a commune in the Doubs department in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region in eastern France. The town is known for having the coldest recorded temperature in France.[3]
Geography
The town is located 30 km (19 mi) south of Pontarlier in the Jura Mountains on the Swiss border. The source of the river Doubs is 2 km (1.2 mi) from Mouthe.
Climate
Mouthe, is located in a region of the Jura Mountains known as "Little Siberia" (La Petite Sibérie) and snowfalls are not uncommon as late as the third week of March.[3] Although the average low temperature for January in the town ranges from about -6 °C to -10 °C, the low temperature descended to -36.7 °C (-34.1 °F) on 13 January 1968, and fell further, to -41.2 °C (-42.2 °F) on 17 January 1985.[3]
