Laura Ruth Harrier (born March 28, 1990) is an American actress and former model. Harrier was first recognized for her portrayal of Destiny Evans in the short-lived reboot of the American soap opera One Life to Live (2013). She made her major film debut and breakthrough portraying Liz in Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017).

Harrier gained further recognition for portraying civil rights activist Patrice Dumas in BlacKkKlansman (2018), for which she received critical acclaim, and Camille Washington in the Netflix miniseries Hollywood (2020).

Early life

Laura Ruth Harrier[1][2] was born on March 28, 1990 in Chicago, Illinois, and was raised in Evanston, Illinois.[3][4] She is biracial with an African-American father and a white mother of Polish and English descent.[5][6] Her father works in insurance and her mother is a speech pathologist.[7][8] She has one younger brother.[9] She attended Evanston Township High School from 2004 to 2008.[10][11] She began modeling at the age of 17 after coming home from school and being discovered by her mother's friend, a location scout, who was doing a photo shoot at her house.[12][13][14]

After graduating high school, Harrier moved to New York City to study art[12] at the New York University Gallatin School of Individualized Study.[15][16] Upon arrival, Harrier deferred enrollment at the university and never attended the school nor graduated; she instead chose to continue modeling.[17] Eventually, she found that modeling was unfulfilling and decided to pursue acting after appearing in commercials and student films.[18][19] She studied acting at the William Esper Studio.[7][9]

Career

Acting

Harrier at the 2016 San Diego Comic-Con promoting Spider-Man: Homecoming

Harrier's first acting job was a main role as Destiny Evans in the web series reboot of American soap opera One Life to Live (2013). The role of Destiny was originated by actress Shenell Edmonds, who was offered the opportunity to reprise her role in the reboot but declined;[20] Harrier took over the role after auditioning.[21][22] She next guest starred as Amber in the TV series Unforgettable (2014),[23][24] and made her film debut in The Last Five Years (2014) as a woman who has an affair with Jeremy Jordan's character.[25] She was cast in the AMC pilot Galyntine (2014), opposite Alycia Debnam-Carey, which was filmed but was not picked up and never aired.[26][27][28] In 2015, she appeared in the film 4th Man Out as Dorothy Cuda[29][30] and was cast in Codes of Conduct, an HBO miniseries created by Steve McQueen.[15][31] Harrier considers this pilot to be her first "real acting job."[15][32] The pilot was filmed but the series was canceled and never aired.[33]

Harrier at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival for BlacKkKlansman

In 2017, Harrier had her major film debut and breakthrough playing

Black Power movement, studied Angela Davis, and contacted people who were in the Black Student Union at Colorado College during the 1970s.[42][43] All of these people were Harrier's inspirations and influences for the role.[44][45] Harrier also attended several of Lee's classes at New York University where he is a film professor.[46] For her performance in the film, Harrier received critical acclaim and was nominated for a Black Reel Award[47] and a Screen Actors Guild Award.[48]

In 2019, director Jamie Adams reached out to Harrier to offer her the lead role in his film

Hollywood Golden Age in the post-World War II era. Harrier drew inspiration for the role from Dorothy Dandridge, Lena Horne, and Halle Berry.[53][54][55] Prior to booking her role, all Harrier knew was that it was an untitled Old Hollywood project. She had an initial audition where she read for the part and then months later was called in once more to do a chemistry read with her later on-screen boyfriend Darren Criss.[56]

Harrier will next star in

Bios with Tom Hanks, which is set to premiere on October 2, 2020,[57][58][59] and The Starling alongside Melissa McCarthy, which is set to premiere in late 2020 on Netflix.[60]

Modeling and fashion

Harrier starred alongside Rowan Blanchard and Mahershala Ali in The Realest Real (2016), a campaign film for luxury French fashion brand Kenzo directed by Carrie Brownstein.[61][62]

Harrier has modeled for campaigns with companies such as

Bvlgari.[65][66][67] She has appeared in magazines such as Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Elle, and Glamour.[9][4][68][69]

Personal life

After graduating high school, Harrier moved to New York City in 2008,[7] relocating to Los Angeles in 2019;[59][19] she has said that she made the move to Los Angeles to advance her career.[70] Harrier is also an avid patron of the arts and exhibitions and collects art, which she decorates her home with.[71][72][73]

Harrier is a passionate supporter of civil rights and advocates for issues such as

transgender rights, gun control, gender equality, and representation for both black people and people of color in general.[74][75][76] She frequently uses her Instagram to call out injustices and has voiced support for Planned Parenthood and the American Civil Liberties Union.[77][78][79] She was also one of the many celebrity signatories for the Time's Up movement,[80][19][81] and donated $1,000 to support the cause.[82][83]

Outside of her activism, Harrier is largely private, voicing her dislike for the paparazzi and being careful about what she puts on social media.[15][84][85] It is known that Harrier was in a relationship with American basketball player Klay Thompson from 2018 to early 2020.[84][86][87][88][89]
