- Xinhai Revolution began with the Wuchang Uprising, marking the beginning of the collapse of the Qing dynasty and the establishment of the Republic of China.
- Kenpeitai, the military police arm of the Imperial Japanese Army, arrested and tortured fifty-seven civilians and civilian internees on suspicion of their involvement in a raid on Singapore Harbour during Operation Jaywick.
- 1963 – The Partial Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, which prohibits all test detonations of nuclear weapons except for those conducted underground, came into effect.
- 1967 – The Outer Space Treaty, a treaty that forms the basis of international space law, entered into force.
- 1973 – United States Vice President Spiro Agnew resigned after being charged with tax evasion.

- 680 – Husayn ibn Ali, grandson of Muhammad, was killed in the Battle of Karbala by the forces of Yazid I, whom Husayn had refused to recognize as caliph.

- 1964 – The opening ceremony of the 1964 Summer Olympics took place in Tokyo (torchbearer Yoshinori Sakai pictured), becoming the first Games to be held in Asia and the first to be broadcast live internationally via satellite.
- 1982 – Maximilian Kolbe, a Polish friar who had volunteered to die in place of a stranger in Auschwitz concentration camp, was canonized by the Catholic Church.
