• "The 1986 Jamaica floods killed 50 people in the country, comparable to flooding that occurred in June 1979. " remove the killed 50 people about to make it less wordy.

• "The floods left 2,000 Jamaicans homeless and killed 50 people in the country." Second part is redundant as it stands, but if you address, the above comment, this comments takes care of itself.
