Doping

Although officially no-one of the top finishers has admitted to using illegal drugs during the 1997 tour it is highly probable that at least some of the top 10 finishers did. Bjarne Riis admitted to having taken illegal drugs in the 1996 tour. Ullrich was on the same team. Virenque was banned in 1998 for doping. Probable? Possible? Perhaps? You seem to have found Ullrich and Virenque guilty of doping in this Tour... Whatever you or I think, it is against Wikipedia policy (

awkward opening

Jan Ullrich's victory margin, of 9' 09" was the largest margin of victory since the internationalisation and popularisation of the Tour brought about by the simultaneous events of Greg LeMond's groundbreaking victories, the first by a non-European, and also the ending of the Cold War. In modern times, Ullrich's effort is yet to be bettered.

the parenthetical "the first by a non-European" seems to apply to Ullrich's victory, not to lemond's. also, lemond's victories weren't simultaneous, and the ending of the cold war is kind of out of place and probably doesn't need to be mentioned. finally, the 9'09" margin was the largest margin of victory since Fignon's victory in 1984 (at 10'32") - two years before lemond's first in 1986. and Fignon's victory certainly counts as "in modern times."

i'm going to rewrite the sentence (and tweak the opening a bit).
