Partly done Updated with new info, but waiting on discussion below to determine whether we should call it extinct. Captain Eek Edits Ho Cap'n! 21:27, 8 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Extinction?

@ Elmidae @DragonflySixtyseven So multiple reliable news outlets have reported the death of the last captive member of the species. But the IUCN redlist has yet to update its status. Do we update the status box to say extinct, but be clear that the attribution is not IUCN? Or do we have to wait for IUCN to declare it extinct? Should the lead declare it extinct based on news reports? Captain Eek Edits Ho Cap'n! 21:25, 8 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

As we can't attribute an "Extinct" status to the IUCN unless they assign it, and we shouldn't leave out an IUCN status from the box if one has been assigned (even if it has been superseded in practice), the usual approach is to explain the state of things in the text. I have inserted an explanation at the end (and a note in the code re the status, although based on experience that'll do exactly zip...). --Elmidae (talk · contribs) 08:08, 9 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
